i don't think i have ever had it pop up until i boot the game. i bet a bunch of mine have updates. i just did one last night for a game i hadn't booted in a couple months.
But if you boot the game up it'll tell you there's an update, so what's the problem?
lol, I like checking out updates and getting a feeling for which developer takes care of the community by releasing new updates regularly. Besides, some updates are rather meaty. The Blobs update was 150MB or something, that took a while to dl for me if I just wanted to play the game. I'd choose to install it earlier then.
On top of that, I also would like to have an active setting to receive push notifications if the dev posts something in the comments. Sometimes they tell users that the DLC is on sale or what not. I like the feeling of getting a message from the dev to my Vita

).Been checking out wiiu threads today off and on. One thing kinda irks me honestly. When vita has a console type experience people seem to whine. Wiiu threads talk about playing a game and moving to other rooms or sharing the tv while playing. The controller sounds like a glorified handheld with tv out honestly. Am I missing something? Was thinking of grabbing a unit for my nephew but still undecided. Think Vita is a little fragile for his age.

I think the update icon appears after the livearea has phoned home, if an update is available, and it gets cached after that. I'm not sure if they phone home immediately upon display - they might only do so at certain intervals. Hence the refresh button. I guess it's a side effect of a system that isn't necessarily always-connected. Like with other parts of design, I would guess the OS/liveareas ration network access with an eye on the battery.
Why not a DS? Cheaper, and thanks to the clamshell design not as fragile. Also has way more kid friendly games.

I was asking that myself as well and wondered why this list isnt in email tags.
People need to let me know if they send me friend requests. I'm constantly at the 100 limit so I have to trim every time someone wants to add me, but I get no prompt.
And as a tech enthusiast, you have no idea how frustrating that is. It does actually bother me that at this point, Nintendo could (theoretically) sell the most barebones Mario/Zelda with no effort put into it and it'd still sell more than the average niche or even AAA game.

True, first gen DS are tanks, but also way inferior to DSL's. Especially the screen quality is way, way, way better. And they are still very endurable. I'd suggest a DSL (over the DSi since the DSi cant play GBA games anymore).
Get a PSP then,cheap console,brilliant lineup and games would look modern at least.
