@slmandel: Auburn job description: We only fired our last 3 undefeated coaches. Come recruit against Nick Saban, deal with looming NCAA investigation.

One Last Appearance of the Smartest Man in Auburn

So Penn State wore numbers on their helmets last week because one of their players got a boo-boo on his knee and couldn't play :(

You can't make this stuff up.

I think the MAC title winner gets in the BCS - thanks to my Cards and Rutgers losing.

Somewhat of a pyrrhic victory for me. We look like shit, but by doing so, we've basically fucked over at least one of the two conferences who won't invite us from getting two BCS bids, by getting a non qualifier in the BCS top 16.

Yeah, fuck you ACC and Big 12.

The Kent State/NIU winner will be above the BEAST champ, but I don't know if they'll make Top 16 with their low computer rankings. Though thanks for making me check the numbers, I just saw that Boise jumps from 25 -> 15 for AP vs. Coaches.

If UCLA and Texas lose then either Boise or Kent State could get a BCS bid if they win out.

Both UCLA and Texas will lose, and Kent State and Northern Illinois are both 11-1 and almost exactly the same in the standings, so no matter who wins that one, I think they get the BCS bid. Would love to see that.

They've played a weaker schedule* than Oregon and have the same record. I don't see the problem.

*Obviously not including the SECCCG.

the SECCCG is exactly the reason why either Alabama or Georgia would get in over Oregon or Florida. Extra game + another victory over a high ranked team.

Nope, wac will get the bid

Mattison does that sometimes, he was adjusting an invisible bra against Nebraska last year. It's all on purpose so I'm not sure if it's really that funny.

Yeah, no shit. He's complaining about the current rankings, which seem perfectly reasonable to me. *shrug*

If Kent wins Saturday and somehow goes to the Orange Bowl, the salt in Columbus is going to be epic.

nonononononononononononononononononononononononono. One spreadmonger with Fedora is enough. Although the UNC/NCSU game would be in the 100s every year.

ESPN has you projected against latech. How's your pass defense?

"Hey come back here!" To be fair, it was better earlier in the season but we've got a number of injuries in our secondary and we have nobody to stop a talent like Clemson has.

Fired coaches, the tally so far:

ACC
NC State

B1G
Purdue

Pac-12
Cal

SEC
Arkansas
Auburn
Kentucky
Tennessee

Mid-Majors
Idaho
UTEP
Western Michigan

Looks like we're the only major program west of the Mississippi that's looking for a coach. Could be a lot worse--next year we'd likely be competing with U Dub, USC, and Colorado, in the Pac alone.

I wonder if there is any chance of Haden and Lane getting Ken Norton back as D-coordinator? Probably can't match that NFL money. Maybe Haden can give him the inside track to the HC position if Lane keeps fucking up?

Well, Arkansas is west of the mississippi, but I know what you mean.

So it looks like the SEC isn't going to be able to fill their spot for the Liberty Bowl this season. Ole Miss wants it apparently but they are reportedly being forced into Birmingham due to how the contracts work out this season.

Meaning the CUSA champ would be forced to play against the Sun Belt champ or something. Which, I guess given't CUSA's overall suckitude this season, that is about what is deserved.

Still takes the wind out of the game with the possible pissing off an indignant fanbase by beating them like in 2010. I doubt Ole Miss would offer that anyway since they would probably happy just to be there in the first place.

Don't discount Idaho, man! Next year's their year!
Never.

We can only hope.

What's your read on the situation up there? It seems like Sark engineered a nice turnaround, but it petered out and he's essentially plateaued at this point. If I'm wrong and he has a great season next year, I imagine you guys keep him around, but I don't see him staying if it's another 7-5er.

He is what he is until proven otherwise: a 7-win coach that gets run off the field by good teams. He's out of rope with the fan base at this point despite recruiting very well. The team is undisciplined and heavily penalized, they fail to show up for many games until halftime, etc. If he doesn't win 9 or 10 games next season and stay competitive in the losses, he should be gone.

Whether our AD (who has been good so far, gotten the stadium remodeled finally) wants to keep him around is another story. He's (of course) been nothing but supportive of Sark so far, but he has also consistently said that the team needs to get better.

If we had done the smart thing and fired Tyrone after year 3 we could have avoided 0-12 AND hired Jim Mora Jr. Fuck everything.

I forgot Georgia didn't play LSU this year. However, I still think USCe and UF stand out more on their schedule than Oregon St. and Stanford.

Sure, I don't think that's an unreasonable position to take. But schedules do consist of more than two games. :P

Yeah, that's what my outside take basically was.

I was going to ask how Kirk Ferentz could still be employed, but then I found this:

Dr. Saturday said:
Ferentz has a reported 10-year, $40 million contract that runs through 2020. If the Hawkeyes fire him, he gets 75 percent of his annual guaranteed compensation over the rest of his contract, to be paid in monthly installments (it's hard to believe any school would agree to that kind of clause, but here's the copy of the contract, via HawkCentral.com). Paying 75 percent of that compensation through 2020 is a lot of money for a fired coach.

Yikes.

Love that when it no longer matters, computers start to respect Oregon. Such is life.

Looking over it, Oregon has a decent resume of blowouts:

8-3 Arkansas State (potential Sun Belt Champ)
9-3 Fresno State (MWC Co-Champ)
7-5 Arizona
@ 7-5 ASU
7-5 Washington
@ 7-5 USC (not really a blowout)
@ 9-3 Oregon State

Colorado, @ WSU, Tennessee Tech, Cal.

Loss:
10-2 Stanford.

Had Oregon switched out a 9-3 UCLA for a Colorado, they'd be right there with Florida I think. Or if KSU hadn't rescheduled I think Oregon sits ahead of Florida. Still, shouldn't have lost to stinky Stanford.

Georgia has wins over:
8-4 Vanderbilt
11-1 Florida
6-6 Ole Miss
6-6 Georgia Tech

Buffalo, Missouri, Florida International, Tennessee, Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia Southern

Blowout loss:
@ 10-2 South Carolina

I'd argue they have the best win over Florida but the resume is very weak.

Remember Ga Tech? Yeah, you want no part of Navy.
We've beaten Navy the last two times we played them, including a much much better Navy team in 2010. A team that struggled to beat Indiana and FAU doesn't scare me in the slightest. The deference between GT and Navy is GT has pro level athletes, Navy never does. You know this.

$3 MM per year through 2020? Good Jesus.

Makes our $6-7 MM to show Tedford the door seem positively reasonable.

What was your take on Kiesau? People up here are unsure what (if any) role he played in the offense's struggles this year. It's hard to tell because Sark calls the plays. I do wonder if it's not coincidence that Nussmeier leaves for Bama and the offense goes to shit, though.

I think he was more important for recruiting than coaching. He was our WR coach, and apparently did some play-calling as well. We never really found out who did the bulk of the play-calling last year--it was some kind of split between Teddy/Coach M/Kiesau--but whoever was calling the shots, it didn't exactly go too well. Kiesau's WRs always played well, but I don't know about taking him as an OC.

I see. Guess that's why Sark felt like he could take him, he wouldn't have to shoulder the load normal OCs do. Well, that and recruiting.

You are probably right. I have emotional scars from our defense this year thatnare going to take a long time to heal.

And I say again, imagine how I feel. I I feel good about our offense going forward, save the stupid 4th n long fake punts. Our defense eats cheeto smelling ass. Our best LB was out this year and we'll get Jeremy Cash from tOSU and Ross Cockrell will be back. Outside of them and Annunike, we have ZERO playmakers. How many tackles did Johnson avoid without really having to try?

My Pac-12 bowl projections:

Rose: Stanford/UCLA winner
Fiesta (or other BCS): Oregon
Alamo: Stanford/UCLA loser
Holiday: USC
Sun: Oregon State
Vegas: UW
Fight Hunger: ASU
New Mexico: Zona

Comparison of my two teams:

Six first half possessions.

Aggies: 6 TD
Ravens: 6 punts

I wonder why I've been watching more CFB this year.
