SemiA: Intel to move to stop selling processors separately, only proc+mobo combos

This is... Interesting.

Although saying this amounts to "killing the desktop" is a bit of an overreaction.

Seems more like a worst-case scenario than a "this will happen" scenario, even if Intel decides to never ever sell processors separate from motherboards and AMD shuts down entirely (no mention at all in the article about that, but wasn't that a thing?).

So... they're basing the end of the desktop PC on a rumor that the CPU will be soldered to the motherboard.

I don't see how this spells the end of the desktop PC, it just means that when you buy a motherboard, it has the CPU included with it.

Wow, so in a year or two we wont be able to build our own rigs with our choice of new CPU's or this just means the mobos will come on the motherboard and will not be as powerful? Either way I don't like how this sounds.

Tablets and smartphones are the way of the future. PCs will stick around, mostly for business or niche hardcore folks.

Because that'd be one step closer to making the PC obsolete as an open platform.

It leaves less room for motherboard manufacturers to differentiate, as instead of consumers picking their configuration separately it is up to the mobo companies to provide all the configurations. That's assuming Intel even lets third parties sell their processors. Either way there's going to be a lot less companies in the market.

But, PC gaming was just gearing up for that big comeback.

welcome to the future, where microsoft and intel completely dominate and rape everyone.

What a complete overreaction. Because yes, nobody will offer an alternative. Nobody. It'll just be Microsoft and Intel shoving spikes down our urethra's.

Although I'm not surprised why you'd think this was given your username.

but neither are as good as a gaming pc at playing games.... (yeah... I know.... when has whats best ever mattered when it comes to profits, loloolo)

edit: was there a time that this was done before? (like in the 8 bit / 16 bit era) I was a knuckle dragging intellivision/nes player back then.

Won't this effectively kill building your own good PC, and thus, kill PC gaming?
I imagine it may stunt it. If we really move to all-in-one sets then I imagine the jump PCs normally have over consoles will be smaller than it's ever been before, though how much that mattered beyond nicer performance hasn't mattered as much recently.

Smartphones and tablets are in no position to assume the not-so-trifling market that desktop PCs currently hold.

Well that sucks to read.

A few years ago I would have posted something like "band together behind AMD!" But now, lol. I hope there's another platform I'm equally happy to game on when this goes down.
