College Football Week 14 - Conference Championship Games and Pseudo Championships

Ohio State would have been in the title game had they not been banned. There was a big bias in the media poll to keep them down so we didnt have a split title again.

They would have played in the Big 10 Championship game, so there is no way of knowing if they would be in the National Championship game. We can't go assuming wins for them.

Nope, would have blown out anyone in the country by 50+ easily. No one will ever know the true power!

and, just as importantly, was ranked ahead of a champion from one of the six AQ conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-12 and SEC). Big East champion Louisville finished six spots behind the Huskies.

Odd, I thought the Big10 would be the better target, seeing as their champ isn't even ranked. Oh wait...

You can partially blame Nebraska and UCLA for Northern Illinois’ inclusion into the Orange Bowl. Wisconsin walloped the Cornhuskers 70-31 in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis on Saturday night, causing them to fall from No. 12 to No. 16 in the BCS standings.

Right, only partial blame to them.

Karl Malone using the school turning down a bowl to campaign for becoming the AD of La Tech.
"I am Bulldog to the core, I am heart broken and embarrassed that our university would do this to Tech Nation. To our football and staff this ... is exactly what is wrong with our university. Now it's time to get former athletes to run our program. I'm (6-foot-9) and not hard to find," Malone wrote.

Malone demanded to know the reason behind turning down the Independence Bowl and called for a change in leadership.

"Wouldn't it be nice to hire a person doing it for university, and not somebody doing it for a bigger and better job in their mind?" he wrote.

"To Bleed tech Blue, you got to be Tech."

You don't think they would have been jumped anyway?

No, its an undefeated team from top 3-4 conference in the nation, would have gotten in. Even though the last 2 title games we were in didnt end well, the name on our jerseys still have pull.

And lets not forget, we have the best whiner in the game. :P

Who would OSU have replaced? Nebraska or Wisconsin? I have no idea how the B1G divisions break down.

Wisc, they were actually 3rd in our division, behind OSU and PSU.

That's what I'm wondering. I think that would have been the discussion this year. Traditionally, an undefeated team from a Big 6 conference gets ranked first, then the one-loss teams fall in line. But there would have been a huge discussion about whether a one-loss SEC champ Alabama would have deserved to be ranked ahead of an undefeated B1G champ Ohio State.

I was more wondering if we would have gotten better bowl matchups that way instead of the mostly lousy ones we have now.

Wisconsin.

Didn't even notice this- ESPN is frickin hilarious. There is no doubt that the Big East stinks but skirting of facts like this is hilarious. I like how he mentions the useless fact that Nebraska fell in the final BCS standings. Why not mention Wisconsin's position in the final BCS standings?

ACC bowl slate

12/27 Belk Bowl, Charlotte NC, Duke vs. Cincinnati. Prediction: Cincinnati.
12/28 Russell Athletic Bowl, Orlando FL, Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers. Prediction: Rutgers.
12/31 Music City Bowl, Nashville TN, NC State vs. Vanderbilt. Prediction: Vanderbilt.
12/31 Sun Bowl, El Paso TX, Georgia Tech vs. USC. Prediction: USC.
12/31 Chick-Fil-A Bowl, Atlanta GA, Clemson vs. LSU. Prediction: LSU.
1/1 Orange Bowl, Miami FL, Florida State vs. Northern Illinois. Prediction: Toss-up. Leaning NIU.

At best, I think it's going to be a 1-5 bowl season for the league.

Wiscy is in the OSU Division. They would've been the ones to beat Nebraska by 100 points.

They really should have called them the OSU and Michigan divisions. So much easier to remember that way.

The BCS matchups would be better, the rest of the bowl picture would be largely unchanged. OSU would probably knock Bama out of the MNC, but the SEC would still have two teams. Oklahoma would still be the first team left out. The main question would be if the Orange Bowl would be stuck with Louisville or went with a UF/FSU rematch.

Legends = michigan (think they used to be good in the 1800s)

Leaders = Ohio State (leading the way to show people how to cheat and get caught doing it)

The one knock I have on Sumlin (so far) is that he interviewed with A&M in the week leading up to Houston's CCG. Did the interview process cause enough distractions to cost them a BCS bowl? I don't know, but it does make me nervous for what will happen in 3-4 years.

He has a big time SEC coaching gig. The only place to go from there is one of the top 5 or so jobs in the country. Doubt you have much to worry about.

Nope, would have blown out anyone in the country by 50+ easily. No one will ever know the true power!

Wasn't this exactly what the media was saying about you back in 06?

So Fresno State to take on SMU in the Hawaii bowl.. that's ok.. I was kind of hoping my team would go to Las Vegas so I could actually go but.. oh well. SMU is a better team than Washington, In my opinion.

Wait what? Washington is probably better (because of its defense) than SMU.

I think Liberty and Rose are the only ones not owned outright by ESPN/Disney. And maybe a couple others. That may be totally wrong.

CBS has the Sun Bowl and FOX has the Cotton Bowl? Is it correct that the BCS games won't be on ABC? Why would you play the national championship game on ESPN instead of ABC? It doesn't make any sense to me unless the listing for ABC includes ESPN/ABC.

Edit: I should also point out that it's no wonder that ESPN tries to influence the results of the BCS when they own 90% of the rights to the games. It's a bit ridiculous actually.

ESPN has even had the MNC Game for the past 2 years as well. Kind of bullshit, too.

Big 12 bowls with my quick predictions and mindless snark:

Dec. 27
Bridgepoint Education Holiday
Baylor(7-5) vs. UCLA(9-4)
Baylor is inconsistent. If Baylor plays like they have the past three weeks, it could go the other way, but don't count on it.

Dec. 28
Meineke Car Care of Texas
Texas Tech(7-5) vs. Minnesota(6-6)
Minnesota looked like poop most of the season.

Dec. 29
New Era Pinstripe
West Virginia(7-5) vs. Syracuse(7-5)
I haven't watched Syracuse play. If they have a good defense, then it will probably go to them.

Valero Alamo
Texas(8-4) vs. Oregon State(9-3)
Like Baylor, Texas is inconsistent. If Ash is playing with his helmet on backwards then give it to OSU.

Buffalo Wild Wings
TCU(7-5) vs. Michigan State(6-6)
TCU looks good the past few weeks. Michigan State lost to Iowa.

Dec. 31
AutoZone Liberty
Iowa State(6-6) vs. Tulsa(10-3)
Iowa State beat Tulsa in the first week 38-23 with a healthy Jake Knott. Knott is injured and the defense has been struggling, but on the flipside the offense is putting up points with Richardson at QB.

Jan. 1
Heart of Dallas
Oklahoma State(7-5) vs. Purdue(6-6)
Purdue plays like poop. Easy OSU win.

Jan. 3
Tostitos Fiesta
Kansas State(11-1) vs. Oregon(11-1)
KSU has struggled on defense the past few weeks, but the offense continues to do work. This is probably the best BCS matchup.

Jan. 4
AT&T Cotton
Oklahoma(10-2) vs. Texas A&M(10-2)
Johnny Football looks good. Oklahoma kinda looks good. This game looks to be good.

damn, is Petersen finally leaving Boise? Boise's starting QB just tweeted this

Joe Southwick ‏@JoeSouthwick16

Coach Peterson not only made us better players, but also better men. I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

edit: well, fuck. It might be a fake account. He misspelled Petersen

Well it finally came true after people calling for it pretty much every off season for the past 5+ years.

Hopefully Boise can find another good coach. I know Peterson wasn't there for all of the winning.

But where? Arkansas? Auburn?

It was inevitable- Boise will find another good coach. That program is a unique one. Hopefully he doesn't end up turning into another Dan Hawkins.

Since I mentioned Hawkins, Colorado would seem like a good fit.

I was at the gym, and the TV was tiny, but did I see correctly that Florida is a 16.5 point favorite over Lolsville?

:jncville.

ESPN has even had the MNC Game for the past 2 years as well. Kind of bullshit, too.

We know why. it is so they can charge like $7/subscriber in their next round of negotiations and force the cable companies to cave. Cable companies suck, but so does ESPN. They are seriously better than FOX, though. Although FOX is making an effort now, at least. Aside from Erin Andrews holding the half time desk, which is weird.

There was that Arkansas page that said Peterson was announcing he was coming on Monday. Most dismissed that...
