Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

guys is there anyway of checking the current version of my Farcry3? not entirely sure if my game has been patched yet. I launched the game through steam->uplay. but dont notice anything being downloaded

Anyone here with a GTX 580, I am curious to see what your performance is like.

I've got a 2600k, 580 3GB, and 8GB of RAM and I am just barely breaking 30fps at 1080p all settings on Ultra (except Post Processing), and DX11 (4x MSAA).

I have the same setup, although my 580 is 1.5gb. I am getting 60 (1080p) with no AA, shadows turned down one from the max, post on low, and that's about it. It's not super consistent, but good enough.

Is it me or is the sound quality in this game bad? Anyone have this on a home theatre set up? I'm having issues with my hdmi 1.4 setup it doesn't sound right.

Sorry if this was already addressed, but I notice a weird issue where some textures and objects render at a lower resolution than 1920x1080. So everything will be crystal clear except for some random building that looks like it's 1280x720 pasted onto the screen. Only when I mash myself right up against the object does the image clear up and look like 1920x1080. It's like the depth of field effect kicks in at the wrong time or something. Anyone else have this problem? How can I fix it? It's really annoying seeing blurry, pixelated objects 3 feet away from me with stuff in the distance still clear.

EDIT: Ok, after messing around with settings it seems upping the PostFX to very high nearly eliminates this problem. And wow, switching to Direct X 9 cleared up all the other little issues I had, especially regarding random fps drops and stuttering.

Some of the incidental dialogue is horribly compressed. The game can be quite mushy overall, too. Feels very muted.

only played the intro sequence so far with dx11 and everything on max. Getting 60 in some areas but yeah as low as 30 in others. 98 percent GPU usage and heating up to 83°C (granted im a bit OCed and on auto fan curve but still)

gtx 680 @ 1200mhz
i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz

pretty brutal! gonna try DX9 + downsampling

They play at 30 fps... and yes it's meh.
FRAPS' FPS counter displays a locked 60 during the opening pre-rendered cutscene. Not sure if it's lying to me, then.

EDIT: Before I said I was getting 70fps. After restarting the game without changing any settings now I'm getting like 30-35. WTF is up with this game?

shading on the grass also seems.. weird. There's either some flickering or z-fighting going on there and it looks weird.

oh wait now I launched the game again (been about 6 hours since I played the intro) and im getting constant 60 with everything on max and MSAAx4, the fuck?

to be fair I hadnt restarted the PC after installing the new drivers.. but afaik you dont have to do that anymore

some stuff in this game looks weird as hell.

killed a snake, this happened with the blood:

the black outline on stuff looks off:

depending on the lighting, some textures look like they're completely black or something:

and the flickering with some shadows

I mean for the most part it looks pretty great, but wtf at some of these

The game is weird. I noticed random performance downgrades too lol

Have you had any input lag problems? Whenever I try to use the sticks, it doesn't register movement until a half second later. It's like Killzone 2 all over again.

No input lag on xbox360 controller here.
Can't help but notice that it 'feels right' with the controller even though I always prefer mouse in fps. Feels slightly 'floaty' with a mouse. Leads me to think it's console port remnants, which is kinda sad when you can't get a FPS to feel excellent with a mouse.
Not game breaking but kinda meh.
If anyone knows a fix to this thaaaaank you!

Can someone please comment on CPU utilization on a beefy +/- 4.5ghz i5/i7 running 1080p? Forgot to check and am using diff pc at the moment.

Switch to HDAO, SSAO is ugly and causes thick outlines.

well shit. DX9 + downsampling = game looks like 5 times better. Obviously runs much better as well.

downsampling is fucking with my hud aspect ratio somewhat, but i'll deal

DX11 implementation in this game is whack as hell

Guys, how can I limit my FPS? My fps jumps anywhere from the high 50s to 30. I just want it to stay at a stable frame rate, is there a program or anything I can do in the settings?

Anyone had the problem where the game loads up with a gigantic transparent black box taking up the bottom 1/3 of the screen? I can't figure out how to fix it.

Sometimes it's messed up, sometimes it's normal.

Flick back through this thread - you can add a MaxFPS argument to the game's config file. Alternatively you could use a third party add-on to enforce it across other games too.

this happened to me with HDAO in dx11

Appreciate it, looks like I'm going to have to do some digging to get this thing running smoothly.

I have a weird issue... I'm not sure exactly how to explain it though.

I'm running the game at mostly 60fps which is fine but there's something weird going on with my IQ.

It feels like I have some kind of film grain... If I look at anything in front of me it's like the pixels are shimmering...It's really hard to explain. I tried taking screenshots but you can't really see it.

Here's my settings right now. I tried changing pretty much all of them at some point but it never fixes it.

Well, dang. I've gotten the game to run alright, but this lag is terrible. Any pc savy among you have any idea what could cause this? Had no trouble with Dishonored.

I really wish they'd separate the items in "post FX". I'd like to be able to have motion blur without FXAA and such.

You can.

Find the GamerProfile.xml file in \Users\[your name]\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3 and add this below </CustomQuality>

<Post>
<quality GameDepthOfField="1" CinematicDepthOfField="1" FXAALevel="2" SSAO="1" DepthDownsample="1" MotionBlur="1" id="ultrahigh" />
</Post>

Then change it to what you want.

Depthdownsampling renders parts of the scene at a lower res to save performance, turning it off will make SSAO and fire effects look nicer but kills performance on most cards.

So reading this thread, I found out Vsync 2 frames will cap it at 30. And I tried using the 360 controller, but there is some clear input lag. The only reason I tried was because, as mentioned above, the mouse controls feel floaty.

Well, time to try and go back to mouse and keyboard.

Edit: I finally got to a suitable frame rate, just had to bump the resolution down :(

Hey, I'm having a weird issue in the opening mission, where the lighting is different around every item. Examples -

Toyed with every option in the game, and looked around on my card's specific settings to no avail. Any tips?\

Update! Unfortunately, after contacting Ubisoft - they informed me that my graphics card (Radeon 6700M) was "not supported", and basically told me I was SOL.
So, if you're attempting to play the game with the laptop version of a graphics card, Ubisoft will offer you no help. Hopefully an update in the future will fix the issue, though it's unlikely.

Are you using SweetFX?

That looks like the split screen option it has.

You need to be using MSAA for Alpha to coverage to work, so if the shimmering you're seeing is mainly in the grass/foliage that could explain why.

Actually I'd say its more visible on the roads than on the grass.

I tried with Alpha to Coverage set to Off and it doesn't change anything.
