Guys. Action Comics #15. Haters didn't believe Morrison could pull it all together, BUT HE DOES. This is the one where everything clicks together, and it's goddamn WONDERFUL.
Oh shit I'm excited. Today is:

Deadpool #3
Action Comics #15
Hawkguy #5
Invincible #98

Invincible should be fucking wild.

All New X-Men 3:

This issue focused almost entirely on Scott's team. Apparently the Pheonix Force messed up the powers of those who possessed it (plus Magneto). Emma lost her telepathy, while Magneto and Scott are having trouble controlling their power. Magik is actually more powerful than she was previously, and can control limbo energy from earth. Magneto confronts Scott and basically tells him that everything he did as the Phoenix was still him, and his fault, and that he needs to man up and accept it. As they are bickering, a new mutant with the ability to mimic the appearance of other people emerges. When Scotts team leaves to contact this new mutant, they are confronted by the Original 5. Presumably next issue is a fight issue.

I suppose it is for the best that the Extinction team is having power issues, because it would be ridiculous to have the teenage original 5 hold their own with adult versions of some of the more powerful mutants on earth. Art in this issue was great yet again. I like the extra effects Stuart is adding to Scott's out of control optic blasts.

Picked up my AXM #2 last night, but today is obviously:

Avengers #1 (secured my baby variant)
Hawkguy #5
Deadpool #3
AXM #3

...and maybe whatever else I missed when I was at the shop.

Best thing about my LCS: Owner has a X-Men vs. Street Fighter cab :)

I spent last night playing the game (only used 1 continue) as the owner loaded up my free play to 4 continues.

Derek said he got it pretty recently (like maybe last week or so). It's in great shape, buttons & sticks are super responsive and it's just missing the parts for the coin slot, so it's free play at this point. He's thinking of holding tournaments on weekends.

Hawkeye is EASILY the best book Marvel put out this week. Smart, well-designed, beautiful, FUN comic book. Reading this after Hickman's Avengers is like night and day. It's not just boring widescreen/vertical panels, it's constantly inventive in it's storytelling, like the panel above. The two-panel page of Clint/Kate busting open the door, the tension of the first panel, and the BIG release of the second. Madme's handgun firing and the resulting explosion creating the panels and the subsequent action, with some WONDERFUL usage of color. When the widescreen panels are used to sell the horizontal action of the projectiles coming towards Kate/Clint. Paluido is so playful with his characters, like the whiny childlike pose Kate is in when
she's caught by Madme's bodyguards
, or how sometimes the skin is blacked out and the cast are defined by their features(Maria Hill's short hair, Nick Fury's eyepatch and goatee, Kingpin's girth, etc). It just makes the panel-to-panel reading that much more visually interesting while never distracting from what the comic is trying to say.

I can't say enough good things about this comic book. Hawkeye is to 2012 what Daredevil was to 2011. The gold standard of Marvel's current crop. If it's ignored at the Eisners, heads will roll.

This is such wonderful news!!! I'm awful with arcade sticks but I would definitely be down for some tournament action.

Yes but they don't coddle the A.D.D. ninnies that were crapped out in the 90's.

Society is doomed! Doomed I tell you!

I was born in the mid 80s but the only comic that I enjoy from that era is Giffen and Dematties Justice League International series. Everything else is so boring with too much unnecessary exposition and fake accents on everybody. The art ain't all that great either.

If you were born in the mid 80s, you grew up with 90s comics unless you were reading your older siblings' back issues.

80s and 90s superhero comics both had a ton of exposition. It wasn't until the early 2000s that there was a purposeful movement away from that.

I got into comics in 1992 so your technically right but I did get back issues from the comic store like Justice League International, All-Star Squadron, and the 80s Superman stuff. Recently I've been trying to read New Mutants, Claremont's X-Men, and Bryne's Superman and it's all such a struggle to get through.

ASM 699:Dan Slott continues to be the greatest comic writer of our generation. I love that
Peter "can't go" to the Avengers or FF, who've dealt with supervillain mind-swaps plenty of times, for no other reason than that this wouldn't allow for the SHOCKING TWIST ENDING to #700 that now seems incredibly obvious.

(I think Spike Spiegel guessed it a few weeks ago, but probable #700 spoilers:
Ock just barely defeats the villains and "kills" Peter, thus proving himself the... superior Spider-Man.
)

Calling the last line of the book: "You were AMAZING... but I'm SUPERIOR."

Doubt it. If only because it'll still be a mystery at the start of Superior #1.

My favorite panel for the week.

edit: I'm sorry acid, I figured since it wasn't really a spoiler then it was okay.

This will probably be why he gets that ridiculous helmet in the new Uncanny X-Men

Hawkeye is the comic of the year. If you aren't reading this, you've already fucked up.
I remember when I saw there was a new Hawkeye solo series coming out and I was like "haha okay", then I saw the creative team.

Definitely the best comic of the year for me as well, with Uncanny X-Force and Daredevil in second and third.

Hmmm. There's a good subject.

YOUR COMICS OF THE YEAR

With Hawkeye, I really enjoyed issues 1-3. Issue 4 was disappointing though. The art didn't come close to what Aja was able to do.

Avengers #1 was disappointing. Well-written, but did nobody realize that this exact story was already done in one of the most famous comics ever :s

It's been one issue. The similarities you describe will most likely be superficial at best by the end of the first arch. The only problem with Hickman comics is that some issues are pure set up like Avengers #1 was. The payoff is usually worth it though.

I was really skeptical about All New X-Men, the idea was crazy and it's Bendis, but I really enjoyed issues #1 and #2. The artwork helped, but the dialog wasn't as typically "everyone is spider-man", and though the pacing is slow it kept my attention.

Downside: How will the pacing chance once Bendis starts another x-book in February in Uncanny X-Men. Is he going to take plot threads that could be in All New and stretch them paper thin like he's used to and content with? That would get me to drop the book.

All-New X-Men is Bendis back at his A game. It seems that Avengers was really hampering him so i'm glad he's finally off that book.

I'm sure it's more that the guy wrote Avengers for nearly 10 years. I doubt he had any more AAA stories left in his head to tell with those characters. But the X-Men, outside of random appearances and House of M, are largely new to him. So he's got a little of that freshness back.

It's nice. I like All New X-Men.

Also, dat Hawkeye. Matt Fraction's one of those dudes who misses a lot with me. But when he hits, he hits big.

or Peter takes his body back. Gets all the baddies but Before Ock dies he does something to take away Peter's power. So Peter uses his superior intellect to make Spidey better.

All-New X-men #3 was ass. Characterzations are out of whack(we're back to whiny stupid Cyclops after Gillen's badass version, Emma Frost sounds NOTHING like Emma Frost), Bendis tics are starting to show, and they really botched that Phoenix/Cyclops argument that goes on for like 4 pages.

Buy Hawkeye instead

I recognize that the timing wouldn't have worked, but Avengers really should have been the flagship Marvel NOW! title that kicked off right after AVX #12. UA is quite good, mind you, but it's too delay-prone and too dependent on prior Marvel continuity to be an ideal jumping-on point.

I hated the completely nonsensical part where
The phoenix did something to our powers! But Magneto was not a phoenix. I guess when he was hit by a phoenix blast, his powers became shit. But Magik's powers are stronger! Like is that the best they could come up with?

Scalped ended this year, and I read most of the run for the first time in 2012, so that is my pick of the year I think.

Runner up would be the culmination of most of the storylines in Hickman's Fantastic Four arc this past spring.

Seriously, he was so proud of it when he showed it to me last night and I was amazed at how good I was at pulling off moves (compared to how I play on a pad). Still got it with my Cyclops/Ryu team that's for sure. Also made me miss the 90's cartoon voices lol.

And yes for Hawkguy being the comic of the year for me. It's the one that's making me commit long-haul so far.

New 52 started to but when I basically missed out on an entire month due to vacation, I was losing interest - which kinda sucked. I may pick up some trades down the line, but I try to keep my pull list to less than 5 per month.

MY TOP FIVE COMICS OF THE YEAR

1. Scalped
Finishing its story on the highest note possible, this book swatted away all comers like some kind of giant fly swatter of awesome
2. Nowhere Men
Just barely squeezing in a single issue before the end of the year, the second best comic of the year only needed 20 pages to be the best debut comic since New X-Men #114 and thus, catapulted into legendary status the second it slid off the printer galley
3. Wolverine & The X-Men
All the wit, charm, and ingenuity we all thought was lost the moment Barnell Bohusk stopped being Beak returned like seven times a month in every issue.
4. Britt Wilson's Greatest Book On Earth
Like some kind of magical cross between John Krickfalusi and Dustin Harbin, meet America's Next Great Cartoonist
5. Hawkeye
Of course this book is amazing. The biggest surprise is that people were surprised.

Hawkeye
Manhattan Projects
Saga
Multiple Warheads
Invincible

Hawkeye #3 being my favorite single issue of the year. Action Comics #13 is right there with it as well.

i think i'm dropping Batwoman after issue #17 that wraps up the arc. If the biggest draw of the book for myself is the art and i end up selling my single issues anyways, thus not keeping the art...then the storyline has to keep up its end or there's no point. Digital codes...

Avengers #1 was the start of something magical. Wake the World Bitches.

HawkGuy #3 - suprise another great issue of hawkguy

Punsher War Zone #2- frank stopping crime around the world as a nice touch

Worlds finest #7- solid issue, art team is still great.

ASM- i liked how peter in stuck between a rock and hard place.

ASM 699 was good but what the heck was up with the
imagined sexual assault of MJ? Does Peter really think Otto would use his new body to go around raping all his girlfriends? If that's the case, what was stopping Doc Ock from going around raping women with his old body?
That panel made no sense to me.
