Imagine a world without Metacritic
tumblr_ltbtgjU70B1qztjn5o1_400.jpg

Imagine a world where game publishers don't base conditions of legal contracts around aggregators like Metacritic and Gamerankings. It's kind of of shockingly unprofessional that million dollar decisions rest on such arbitrary things.

Define "lately."

Since they have been back from the holiday break there have been 10 quick looks, 2 TNTs, and a Jar Time. Plus they are constantly saying that they are trying to play at least a little of the games the others want to include in their GOTY deliberations so they are knowledgeable (at least Brad has said this). I just do not understand the complaint is all....maybe in the summer, but now? Hardly.

He is right though that they did nothing for those games and it doesn't seem like we will get something. This week seems pretty lackluster so far. I don't see a live thing besides TNT and today we only got one QL. remember when we got 3 a day?

YUP! Ugh there is even a local game dev in our area that uses Metacritic as a recruitment tool. Something to the effect of "Must have worked on at least 3 AAA games with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher".

I find quicklooks far more useful in determining if a game is for me than reviews and review scores ever were.

Agreed. Dead Island, ZombiU, and Forza Horizon are my personal examples of that. I wouldn't have touched any of them without having seen the QLs.

To be fair, job requirements like that are often regarded as "wants" and not "needs". I'm sure they'd love to hire someone with a Metacritic average in the 90s, but that wouldn't stop me from applying.

Haven't they traditionally done a retro stream on their last day in the office for the year? I seem to recall they did it the last 2 years.

jeff's insistence on calling cartridges "tapes" reminds me of a usenet post from the late 80s where someone complained about old people still using the word "tapes"

Everything is interesting!

I want to skip around to the interesting parts! Just plop it into the comment tag on the mp3. Lots of podcasts do this. That way I can ignore all of the Mass Effect talk and avoid possible spoilers.

Get off his lawn!

Yeah, drove me nuts watching them open it with what seemed like such indifference.

That said, the end of the video CONFIRMS THAT BRAD HAS LEFT GIANTBOMB.

I'm curious if it was more that they don't want to suddenly be the place that people send all their old games to. I mean, don't Ryan and Jeff already have decent collections of older games? Patrick definitely seemed super psyched about it.

Sure, makes sense. The typical GB viewer probably knows what's worth something and would keep it; only shipping them the common games.

That said, it isn't cheap to ship a box of games such as that one... so you could assume it wouldn't happen as much.

That, and I get waaay too excited over N64 stuff relative to the rest of the video game community. I did, however, see a yellow Nintendo 64 cartridge in there; and DK64, Earthworm Jim 3D or THPS2 aren't necessarily cheap.

A lot of people seem to be Walking Dead for GOTY candidates but to be quite honest I'm shocked that Trials Evolution isn't getting many mentions anywhere. That is easily one of the top 5 downloadable games of the year with great score chasings, great multiplayer, and user created content and the Brad gif of "holy fucking shit" is from the reveal at the preview event.

What "I" like and what Giantbomb, or others, like is very different. For example, Tokyo Jungle is a joke of a game that is only entertaining for a few hours, and mostly because of its ridiculous premise. Patrick rationalized his enjoyment of it some other way (though on twitter, when pushed, described his fondness for the game as something that could "only come out of Japan", but earlier said that the game isn't just about its weirdness. whatever). Then, there's The Walking Dead, which I enjoyed immensely, but for simpler reasons than what some people give. (Game gets too much praise just because it is a "serious" story).

I tend to ask people I know who are really into movies/games/books two questions: What is their favorite whatever, and what is the best whatever they've ever seen or read? More often than not, those are two different answers, and the enjoyment of discussion isn't what they listed, but why those two questions don't have the same answer. And, more often than not, the people who list the same question are pretentious and boring, saying Citizen Kane is the best and favorite movie, or more recently, Vertigo (or whatever is the thing of the year).
