Halo 4 sells ~4 million copies, series hits 50 million

For NPD (North America only):

01. Halo: Reach (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - 3.3 Million (Released September 14th)

01. Halo 3* (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - 3.3 million (Released September 25th)

XX. Halo 4 (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - ? million (Released November 6th)

Wow. If Halo 4 fails to outsell Halo 3 and Reach with the massive date advantage and holiday sales than COD has really done a massive damage to Halo 4 sales.

4 million in a month is an amazing feat, but it does not sound good for the franchise when the numbers show decline.

could be that 4m is from US sales and Microsoft doesn't have info for the rest of the world yet, otherwise this isn't a good result.

HaloGAF probably knows better how it compares with previous games as far as online populations goes, but to me it didn't look so hot, dropped very quickly.

its in decline not cause of cod really, its because it sucks.

If they're throwing around franchise totals I suspect its a worldwide shipped number

The game reviewed very well though, so that would only effect word of mouth sales. Halo (like CoD) is one of those games that I think most people who are going to buy it are going to buy it day one no matter what, so I'm not sure that word of mouth after the fact would have a significant impact here; I think this was just mostly MS marketing being idiots releasing it the week before CoD.

That's not great for Halo. Halo 4 would've made an amazing launch title as well.

That's never a good idea though; that would guarantee they could only sell copies to a much smaller potential audience since hardware is in short supply for a while after most launches.

I wonder how much those numbers were impacted by the game not having a publicly available beta like Halo 3 and Reach did. They're decent ways to get the word out about a game, especially one as big as Halo.

Halo 5 will be even better for its second Christmas.
360 owners are tied into the new trilogy now, its not just 'the 720's trilogy'.

Might have been better having 2 like on Xbox; but we'll see.

Personally, and this is coming from a graphics whore pc gamer, I hope they focus less on graphics on Halo 5 and really dig into the gameplay, especially relating to multiplayer sandbox balance and having more (better) maps available upon release. If they don't mess with the visuals they could have a solid 60 fps and could easily implement some AA to clear up the remaining jaggies.

Sorry, this is not really related to this thread.

Meh its a sales thread these things are important.
I think they need to concentrate more on adding to what Halo is; not just following what other people have been doing with their games.

Its a close quarters combat game at heart. Its built around working your way up a hill to an enemy position and killing them close up. Thats its core gameplay.

They need some enemies that add some extra interaction in this up close and personal; maybe add some more moves/actions; people might disagree but I think a roll function would be great.

Meanwhile online make it 2 hits to kill once the shield is down. Halo online remains old deathmatch style play and you can tell it was the first gen of console multiplayer.

Needs big changes to online and basic gameplay for me really.
But progressive changes. Nothing radical.

Gears of War 3 shipped 3m in first week in comparison in September, this is very bad in perspective :P
maybe launching on election day and a week before Black Ops was a very bad idea...

4million is bad? Huh?

The sales are decent. CoD is probably down again this year, as well. It's a tough time all round.

Interesting how MS released this info before NPD, I guess the HW numbers must have been pretty good and they don't want to distract from them.

Beat it and sold it, campaign was fun but halo multi is definitely not my thing. Thank god for the Amex deals or it wouldn't haven worth it

Considering those two factors, it sounds like it sold as well as it could have and I'm sure 343 is contented with that.

You complained prior to launch that it was biting COD. Then you said if you had a choice between the two, you'd buy COD. I'm surprised you have even played Halo 4 because it sounded like you were far from being interested.

I wouldn't say there's any real motivation to keep people invested in this 'trilogy', there's not many plot points going forward.

Dangerous times for Microsoft.

.

for Halo it is bad if it shipped 4m in a month, it's all relative to past entries, this number if it is accurate shows a significant decline. We will see how NPD number is. Pubs always want growth not stagnation or decline, changes in Halo 4 were all intended for growth of the series obviously..

Can't blame all the people thinking 4mln is bad, since we heard stuff like "Dead Space 3 has to sell 5 million copies to survive".

Wait, what? Halo 4 ended with asking far more questions than it answered, as would be expected in the first game of a trilogy. There are a lot of people invested in seeing where the series goes from here.

Now I don't follow a lot of sales threads and discussions, but how is 4mil. low when sales are generally lower and declining.

Seriously?

Well deserved for Halo 4. best game since the original. I actually enjoyed the campaign for a change.

Halo Reach sold 3.3 million copies on its first month. I can't find any info on Halo 3's first month sales.

Congrats 343. I love the game more than the other outputs from bungie this gen. You deserve all the success in the world!

Edit: Halo 3 (all three SKUs - Xbox 360) – 3.3 million According to NPD.

So this is the highest first month for any Halo. Whoa, what the fuck are you smoking if you think that's low.

The NPD estimates will naturally be significantly lower than the worldwide sell-in figure in the OP

grimshawish it doesnt play like old deathmatch.its like cod now with perks,xp,killstreaks.

I mean the core gameplay. Its very much the competitive spirit.
But I feel that makes it more about honing skill than just having full on fun.

This is why I find the perks so ridiculous. They are there for a competitive and persistent edge. Halo already had that imo.

Good numbers but it's certainly my least favourite of the series (not including wars). It's still a decent game, though. Even bad halo is more enjoyable than most shooters.

Lol, speak for yourself mate. I'm actually more interested in what happens next than when I finished Halo: CE.

And Microsoft is fine.

4 million first month huh? That's more than Halo 3 and Halo Reach (according to NPD). Nice to see some growth. Hope this bad boy has legs.

Gratz to 343!

Core gameplay has been the same since the beginning, agreed. Even if you don't care for perks or killstreaks (which isn't exactly what they are anyways) there are the objective playlists and classic playlists that don't feature any perks or ordinance drops. I doubt that dude has played at all.

Cannot conclude that. NPD numbers from Halo 3/Reach vs Worldwide sales of Halo 4 (as article suggests). It's reasonable to think NPD will be below 4M.... My guess is 2.5-2.9M in North America...

thats ww,its less than reach and 3 for npd. that is why microsoft put it out early before npd to make it seem good lol.
