Halo 4 sells ~4 million copies, series hits 50 million

Yes it was, at least to me. I'm a hardcore COD player and Halo4's multiplayer has gotten me to play more Halo than any other Halo.

lol that's exactly the problem people have. Of course if you're a "hardcore" COD player you're going to enjoy a game that's more like COD than before.

Great numbers but does this not put it into the Gears and Uncharted territory. 4 million in a month? Seems lower than I expected.

Given a sense of reward and player progression in a multiplayer shooter was something establish by Call of Duty, but it was also a phase shift for the genre. Halo 4 handles it differently than Call of Duty does, and rewards nearly every action with medals, which go to Ordinance Drops, which carries over after death. Giving a tangible reward for doing well isn't going to go away, and 343i implements it in way that works for the Halo series in Halo 4.

Agreed. It's a trend/feature that's not going away, and I'm happy with waht 343i has done in H4. Great game.

That would be really dumb. How many COD clones fail because they are too similar too COD? Too many. Games like Halo and Killzone have unique gameplay should just stick to their own formula to distinguish themselves from the 1000 other COD clones.

I, uh, think we're in agreement. H4 has some CoD features, but it's not a clone

I should have been more specific. Halo 4 does NOT feel like a COD clone at all. I'm not sure what they changed but the guns feel very satisfying to use compared to Reach. Kills against AI seem a bit easier to perform. Legendary on Halo 4 was hard but not frustratingly so compared to Reach (in comparison I'm stuck in level 3 on Legendary). Maybe they made the enemies more simplistic in terms of movement because I can kill an Elite with a plasma pistal and 1 shot in the head with DMR with ease in Halo 4..

In what way? Will the next non epic developed Gears game come remotely close in sales? How many copies of Uncharted 3 sold in the first month?

That's the conundrum Bungie and now 343i was/is in.

CoD is massively successful. Any smart FPS dev would be wise to copy, at least, some of the more-popular CoD features. That's smart business. But the dev would also need to keep the Halo identity.

So do they try to appeal to the CoD crowd, or the hardcore Halo crowd? Staying the same (like Halo 3) would lead to stagnation, however. Personally, H4 is the most CoD-like that I want 343i to go

No it isn't. A smart developer would innovate on their own. Not look to the best selling franchise in desperation for sales.

And it's pretty stupid they had to chose from COD in the first place rather than a game like Battlefield which would be much more compatible with the Halo gameplay.

Has an Uncharted or Gears ever launched on the same month as a COD along with a system launch? I'm not saying these Halo 4 numbers are fantastic, but they are probably what MS expected given the launch schedule.

What are you taking about? It puts it exactly in Gears and Uncharted territory.

halo is still tier above uc and gears in sales

Uncharted ? Yeah not with a system launch though

Seems good to me, it's an exclusive after all so we shouldn't expect COD numbers or anything, though COD is more popular than Halo even on the 360.

Lol no Halo sells better than Uncharted and Gears of War.

UC3 sold 4 I think. Gears sold slightly more. Dunno about a non epic developed gears game as that is hypothetical.

That is what I meant. I thought Halo generally is much higher than gears and UC. This must be because we are reaching the end of the console gen.

UC3 launched in the month of Nov.

See the point was to say that there's only a finite amount of $$ people are willing to spend at a given time. Wii U system launch with its new games + biggest franchise in COD launch that launched a week later + a hyped up Assassin's Creed game that released a week earlier.... any other game would've bombed hard.

I just read something that stated that they sold 3.8 million copies of Uncharted 3 on day one. That really doesn't sound remotely close to being possible, seeing as Uncharted 2 took a month to sell 1 million.

Indeed it is. Any smart dev/business will look at what's successful in their field, and take pointers from that. Doing so doesn't necessarily mean making a clone of the competitor, however.

If you're "losing", then you have to figure out why you're losing, and why the other guy is winning.

It's clearly not 4 million. It was about 4 mill first week going by the revenue. Halo 3 shipped 8.6m in the first 3 months?

Well i hope for my sake it ends near 3 mil :v

haha - probably will tbf, Halo games are pretty skewed to the US.

Oh not denial! These are MS's own numbers!
Also that revenue was 'entertainment launch revenue' and all very floaty language.

Halo 3 is not Halo 4 so its irrelevant to the Halo 4 number except to point out the fall in sales.

Good for you, I hate COD gameplay and loved the MP of Halo 2 and Halo 3 and Halo 4 is with reach the worst Halo MP experience for me..

so who should Halo generally appeal more to?

And the people who say "so you want the exact game like before?" .. Yes kind of, COD also doesn't change their core gameplay, that is why fans can move on to the next game etc..

If Halo 2's gameplay would be keeped just maybe with some new weapons, maps and better graphics etc I would play it more than a game with Armor Abilities, Ordnance meters, Instant Respawns and Loudouts.

Back to the numbers, the numbers are ok, maybe they will increase over christmas.

We will be able to pluck a very definitive statement from NPD very soon that will settle the comparison talk very shortly. I forgot how much I don't care about SalesGaf except every three years or so.

^right, a press release for some tournament is probably not a good source for sales numbers anyway, and with all the rounded numbers, 46 and 50 aren't exactly 46 and 50...

Ah, I'm a dope. I completely misread your post, and thought you were saying it was worse than Uncharted/Gears.

I do hope so.

If it has done 3.[?] in NA and 340 in UK, so the rest of europe seems pretty low then

So the 360's flagship franchise sold 4 million copies in a month and that's considered good? Diablo III sold 3,5 million copies in a day and 6 million in a week!

Those 4 million sales are not true imo since that NPD it has done 3.2.

Regarding Diablo 3 , it also sold in a different market altogether.
