Voyager could have done the Borg well. Have them encounter races on the outskirts of Borg space that know how to fight them. Then at least it would have been plausible to them to beat the Borg so often. Heck, make Species 8472 sympathetic to Voyager and have them help them through Borg space.

One of reason I actually really enjoy Voyager's Finale. Their power over the Borg actually made sense since it was tech from future Janeway and she stole that tech from Batman.

Khan was a better villain and is more realistic. Mitchell was throwaway, most people didn't even remember him until the speculation about him being in this movie caused us to look him up. Yes maybe Khan (or one of his men) weren't in Starfleet, but maybe he joins it when first revived. Also, The Joker and Bane were "one man weapon of mass destruction" type guys and they had no special powers.

Of course Khan is more memorable and the better villain, but I'd rather this film tackle Mitchell over Khan. This movie will never do Khan better than Khan in Space Seed and Wrath of Khan. This is a stand alone series with no television show to serve as back story because of the timeline split. The fact that Khan was beautifully set up in Space Seed is a very key part of what made Wrath of Khan so special. Yeah, it's a great movie even if you've never seen Space Seed, but that extra layer cemented Khan's immortality as the greatest Star Trek villain.

That's why I wish they would just leave him alone.

Mitchell on the other hand doesn't need such set up. Who cares if a lot of people don't remember him, doesn't mean he can't be effectively used in the film. And that episode is pretty popular among Star Trek fans. It certainly sticks out for me. I thought it handled the man becoming a god thing pretty well.

Listen, I get that you don't want it to be Mitchell, but that's no reason to deny that from what we know he's the best fit. The villain is from Star Trek canon and everything we know fits Mitchell.

It's probably Mitchell. I'm open for other non-Khan candidates that fit better or just as well, but I can't think of any.

I hope that the full trailer (when does that hit?) and the nine minute thing settle this. There's no need to hide the villain that long.

Star Trek TMP does have one of the most disturbing and random scenes with the transporter accident that kills two officers. And the only reason that scene is in the movie is to give a plot excuse to add Spock to the crew.

I'd say the big point is that while Gary Mitchell is only known to Trek fans, I'd argue most people don't know who Khan is either. If they were going to use Khan in the hopes that the non-Trekkies remember him, I really think they'd be open about it at this point. This isn't Joker from Batman that pretty much everyone knows in one form or another. There's no reason to redo Khan other than laziness, and I really hope they don't go down that route.

Looks explosive.

This'll probably have a stronger villain than Star Trek 09 by far. I just hope there's some star trekking involved. There's no set-up for the crew now, it's all there. Obviously there's going to be a lot of Earth in the film, but I'd like some Enterprise voyages too.

Too young to be Garth and he's not really a one man superweapon. His special ability is shapeshifting.

I don't even know how they could possibly argue that it's Sybok.

I think I saw some talk (maybe in this thread?) about Cumberbatch's ears being Vulcan-like, maybe that's where they're getting it from.

Yeah, I can't grasp the point behind it. Usually the point of a "mystery villain" is generate talk as to what or who it could be. Cloverfield, for example. This generates buzz. It even works for plots, ie Super 8. However, I don't understand how keeping Cumberbatch's character a mystery for so long would increase the buzz around the film

Non-Star Trek fans won't even realize there is supposed to be any sort of mystery behind which canon character he is, nor do they really care, I imagine. No buzz to generate there. As for Trek fans, we are going to be talking about the movie anyway. Even if they came right out and said it's Mitchell or Khan, we are still gonna talk about it and the possibilities. The buzz exists anyway with us, so why keep it secret for so long?

Maybe they just want to have a bit of fun?

If they keep it secret until the film is released I'll be really baffled.

Kind of a weird video, tbh. Made me kinda indifferent.

It's a lot darker, visually, and tonally than what we were getting in 09. 09 was so colorful and so damn inspirational. I hope that they don't deviate too much from that with Into Darkness, this reminds me of the kind of muted coloring in Transformers 3 and that's not a good thing. Even if the second half of 09 was dumb in terms of contrivances, it has a lot of depth to the overall setting and themes, especially considering the split timeline stuff. This better not just be as simple as it looks.

The extra footage in the japanese version of the teaser just annoys me. Seriously, if they're just lifting crap wholesale from earlier films already than put Abrams's ST out to pasture already.

JJ is correctly following the Star Wars order for this movie:

First film bright, colorful and optimistic
Second film very dark, dirty, tragic
Third film mix of the two, bigger in scope, epic

Yeah. No one knows if it's actual setup or just the comics doing their own thing. I'm going to assume the latter. I still want to pick up these books.
Looks like a lot of posts happened between the one above and now, but I read in the collected edition that Roberto Orci is overseeing the comic series "leading up to the sequel". So yeah, the comic is probably canon just like Countdown/Nero/Spock/etc..

Fouth Film will be the final film with the crew, adn rather than redoing the final movie, they'll redo the final TOS episode "Turnabout Intruder" and it will be declared the most hilarious and sexist film in history!

I want to see them redo The Gamesters of Triskelion on a 150 million quatloos budget. Andy Serkis provides motion capture for the 3 brains in jars.

Wait... Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan?.... I like him but that's not who I was imagining with the character coming off of Ricardo Montalban.

on imdb they are saying its either sybok or garth of izar

That...would actually work perfectly. Perhaps better then Mitchell. His high position in Star Fleet would cover the enemy within line, and his new explosives, shape changing, and healing powers would fit the description of weapon of mass destruction. Also, makes sense (depending on what they do to the origin story) that he would hate Kirk, and Kirk would hate him.

AND the damaged uniform would fit as well...

1) Garth was part of Pike's generation, Cumberbach is way too young.

2) Having weapons of mass destruction doesn't make you a "one man weapon of mass destruction"

3) What personal score to settle?

It's not Garth it's Mitchell.

They're trying to fire up the nerd base, and it's obviously working. The Internet is talking about Star Trek. Smart move by Abrams.

Seriously. So excited for Giacc's follow-up to his Trek score.

I want to see how he handles a sequel to a movie he scored. Does he build upon his previous themes, or reinvent the wheel?

The Mission Impossible movies didn't show much, since they were mostly a collection of action riffs. His Star Trek score however has actual themes and melodies.

You could say he's kind of already been through that process with LOST.

I somehow missed this bit when it originally slipped out:

At a promotional junket for Dredd, Karl Urban looks to have let slip to SFX who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel. When asked what it was like having the Sherlock actor on set, Urban said:

“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

No doubt left in my mind.

Enough with the comics stuff already. As with all "canon" licensed material, it's only canon until someone higher up decides they want to do a story ignoring the licensed book's continuity.

Well, Orci explicitly said that all "expanded universe" material overseen by them and set in the reboot continuity is canon.

Wouldn't be the first time someone involved with a franchise film lied about a plot point or two, though.

If I was Zack Hemsey I'd be pissed that everyone's just ripping off the aesthetic and not even licensing the real deal.

Although I guess technically, the "BWANNGGGGGG" came before he wrote Mind Heist. The original Inception trailer didn't have any music, just the sound effect.

Also, if crossing the galactic barrier turns you into a god, wouldn't a bunch of people try to do it once word got out? What would you do about hundreds of Gary Mitchells?

Mitchell had ridiculously high psionic readings -- for a human -- from his days at the academy. Whatever the barrier was made out of could expand on those. It's been years since I've seen the episode though.

I don't remember any humans that aren't half-alien having telepathy or telekinesis in the ST universe and certainly no talk of "psionic readings". Was Gary Mitchell the only one?

What if Vulcans or Betazeds cross the barrier?

Why would anyone want to repeat the experiment after what happened to Mitchell?

Why would anyone want godly powers? Why wouldn't they? Also, you'd think more aggressive species would send some of their people to get superpowers to be used as weapons of war.

Why is there a galactic barrier anyways? Do we have one in real life?
