Well I certainly did not expect to wake up to this. Good god. I can barely contain my excitement. I do fear for the game potentially getting dumbed down to appeal to a larger audience, but I'll trust in From for now. Day fucking 0 for the PC version.

Awesome. Glad they are getting more support.

Just glancing over the stuff in the OP the aesthetic gives kind of a Skyrim vibe. Wonder how true that will be of the actual game.

We will soon have a non CG trailer with gameplay I guess.

If Hidetaka Miyazaki isn't part of it, or doesn't have as much control as he did, then I do not have much hope. If he is, or whoever it was that made Demon Souls and Dark Souls the way they are, and the trailer was just a generic western cash in, then good I guess, but then they would have neglected an important thing about Dark Souls -- its "obscurity", its vague story and the details, or lack thereof. The trailers for Dark Souls are perfect examples of what I mean.

Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.

My reactions :

:) :( :)

Isn't he supervising anyway ?

I came.

Slightly worried about the change of director though..

Here's hoping they add a greater variety of combat spells for mages.. I feel that is the most lacking thing in the previous two games.

That can mean a lot of things, unfortunately.
Though i doubt he'd give away his franchise lightly.
he said in many interviews they had many plans for this serie, I think he will keep tight control on it. He used to talk about how he'd like to make the KING'S FIELD games return, can we assume he is working on this, or his he already directing a known project ?

Vague story and obscurity are easier to do on first entries than sequels. By making a sequel they have to show familiar stuff (the undead, the idea of darkness and light, dragons) while posing new mysteries for the acquainted with the series (who's the girl, what's with the masked people, who's the dragon, which city is the one shown in the trailer).

I thought the trailer was perfect, it presented a bunch of interesting locations and characters, got me hyped by showing an action sequence set to awesome music and ended on a typical Souls image of the defeated knight, accepting his death.

The trailers for the first Dark Souls weren't all minimalistic either, many of them were pretty much death compilations.

Ha

I FUCKING knew it

:P :P

Hopefully they don't add some easy difficulty setting or crap like that.
Nice

Fuck yes! Souls series is one of the few good ones left in the river of shit that is modern gaming. Please a 120fps/1080p pc version this time!

Umbasa!

Our knight who art in dark souls
hallowed be thy name
thy kingdom come thy will be done
on earth as it is in durante
give us this day our daily boss fight
and forgive us our deaths
as we forgive those who invade against us
and lead us not in temptation but deliver us from evil
amen

The CGI quality was also damn good, if you ask me.

The bones of the giant crow? And the remnants of the Crow's nest near Firelink shrine (edit - or the area right outside of the Undead Asylum with Snuggly the Crow's nest)?

Haven't even watched the trailer yet but I'm already hyped like a 6 year old the day before Christmas, Souls games are best games! Fuck yeah!!

I don't know why people are freaking out over a live action/cg trailer that was quickly put together just to convey the fact that a sequel is in production. I thought it was pretty amazing for an announcement trailer for a game that's never even been hinted at being in production. Hell, they probably hired an outside source for the preview.... gave them a description, and a bit of direction of what they wanted portrayed and then went back to doing actual work on the actual game.

Bit fucking early to announce a sequel?

Fairly early.

That said, the Souls games are actually fairly low budget. They also don't have things that take huge chunks out of development time like a variety of drastically different gameplay styles (Like Uncharted or God of War). Dark Souls was released two years after Demon's Souls. It was also announced fairly early as well. If this is like Dark Souls the game shouldn't take more than 2 years to develop.

As we find out in issue 249, the answers to these questions are in the hands of game directors new to the Souls series, Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, who have taken the reins from Hidetaka Miyazaki. Their descriptions of how they intend to mould Dark Souls II into a more approachable form seem reasonable. But Shibuya admits that their approach will be influenced by their individual characters. “I personally am the sort of person who likes to be more direct than subtle,” he tells us. “[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable.” We sympathise if that sort of statement concerns you, but at the same time, we can surely agree that we would all like to see Dark Souls attain as great a presence as The Elder Scrolls. How it gets there is a worthy matter for debate, but it’s certainly a noble task.
This does sound terrible.

I don't mind an easy mode as much as I'd do if they actually explained all the systems, tutoliarized and whatnot. That'd be a terrible shame.

This is going to piss off a lot of people or make tears of anger but basically what they need to not do is make the game so it caters to the west.

Am not going to bother explaining it since those who need an explanation are part of the problem.

Those who understand will get exactly what I mean.

Is... this satire?

(EDIT: Btw, I mostly agree the notion, but the delivery...)

Yeah, what a terrible shame not making people browse a wiki to make sure they don't put fuck up their builds by putting points into resistance is.

Of all the things I want them to do, it is make the bows and stuff actually fun to use. Currently they are just basic to use and have very limited uses. At least give us some bow skills to make things fun!

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I think the game would lose some of its magic if it were indeed more straightforward and direct. I enjoyed trying to decipher the game world and understand the mechanics (World Tendency/Covenant systems) as well as the lore behind it all. Having that spelled out would be a little annoying.

Though that does mean they could overhaul the Covenant system and have some of them actually work (Gravelord). I just hope the server system they use is more in line with Demon's than Dark. I put on Demon's earlier tonight and thought it was awesome seeing the ghosts of other players roaming around. And it occurs at a much more frequent rate than Dark Souls (and come on, they looked ridiculous in Dark Souls).

Wow, you're so deep man.

The discovery, trial and error, and difficulty of Dark Souls is quite literally the point of the game.

Plus you can go to the character sheet in game and get an explanation of what every single stat in the game does in Dark Souls already.

Bows are ridiculously OP. Bump up dex a bit and take a longbow to +15 and you can just spam arrows all day without fear of retaliation.

Where in the character sheet is it mentioned that attributes cap out?

When you level and you are literally shown exactly how the stats will change your character.
You only get to know that when it's too late -- you have to start over to fix the mistake.

I'm not saying that Dark Souls isn't a wonderful game. I'm saying that taking all the bullshit out is only going to make it better.

No you don't. When you are in the leveling screen, scroll down to the stat you want to change. Flip it over like you are wanting to level it, and it will show you how it will change your character. You can then take the points back without confirming it and be right where you were to begin with. There is no point where you have to "start over to fix the mistake".
