I think this is the best image to use when looking at the art style since it's the only one rendered in the game engine. Even the CG in Dark Souls and Demon's looked a bit different than the actual games.

The guy in the CG trailer is acting all tough and badass but here he has the characteristic "fallen and about to die" look seen in the other two games. Even the armor looks like something straight out of Dark. I could totally see this guy running around in pvp. And the place he is in looks like an underground level like the Depths.

No difference between sub-HD and full HD? Well certainly, if you're playing 30 feet away ...

People still using that BS image. Load up the game on ps3, slap on the elite set, grab a greataxe and zoom in. The details are not muddy. I can see the designs on the axe quite clearly.

Fix it yourself. They both take simple fixes.

Ridiculous excuse.

I did fix both of those problems, and played the game. I think it is ridiculous that Durante fixed the resolution in 15 minutes without access to the source code and for some reason we can't just get it patched into the game. Likewise with the sound issue. I played for like 30 hours before I realized I wasn't hearing half of the audio. I just thought the game had all-time bad sound design, and I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there who played through the whole game without ambient sound, but I guess I'm ridiculous for thinking a game should just have ambient sound out of the box.

If anyone wants to see how the game looks on PC:

It's such a beautiful game. Really, I think what the default PC / console version does to the utterly fantastic art assets is a tragedy.

Also, I wonder where this impression that the PC version is overflowing with hackers is coming from. As I said earlier in the thread, I played the game for 200 hours, all online, and encountered 2 of them. If there are more videos of it out there than on consoles, may that not mostly be due to how easy it is to record a video as opposed to doing so on consoles?

I want DS 2 100000x times more difficult!
They should enable friendly fire when playing co-op lol! It would be awesome!
And besides invading other worlds with your character, you should be able to invade and possess an enemy body! Like world 3 boss in Demons but not just a boss a regular enemy too!

*sigh* yeah that wasn't my intention. I just wanted to lay the facts to let him decide.

In any case...

DARK SOULS 2! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

That Unmodded shot is only running at native 1920*1080 with no SMAA. It can look a lot better than that on PC if you use super sampling and/or SMAA.

Uh, what you're forgetting is that natively the game doesn't support resolutions higher than rendering at 1024x720 and as far as I can tell, the in game Anti-aliasing doesn't really do anything.

From's texture work on some of its assets are simply incredible.

Hopefully we will see that work spread to the whole game now that they know it can actually be seen and appreciated.

Oh OK. I was just assuming that you were not buying the game BC of some simple issues.

Should never deprive your self of such an amazing experience for something so trivial.

I had a similar situation with the sound. I played for about 20 hours before applying the fix. I thought the sound design was horrible as well, after the fix I was blown away.

The quote in the Edge thread about the new director wanting to make the game more accessible and have a 'presence like The Elder Scrolls' is really worrying. Sounds like they are dumbing it down to get more sales (I assume presence means popularity/sales here). That also explains why the trailer looks like Skyrim Souls and not like Dark Souls.

If this is true, they're killing exactly what made the games so popular in the first place.
Another franchise down the drain...

Good God, you are trying way too hard to be pessimistic about this.

“I personally am the sort of person who likes to be more direct than subtle,” he tells us. “[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable.” We sympathise if that sort of statement concerns you, but at the same time, we can surely agree that we would all like to see Dark Souls attain as great a presence as The Elder Scrolls. How it gets there is a worthy matter for debate, but it’s certainly a noble task.

Oh please FUCK OFF Edge.

I meant to say modded. His modded shot doesn't use the full potential of the Durante fix because neither super sampling nor SMAA is used.

It's not that. It's the mess that is going on in this page

Right. No PC gamers should be happy to know that the Soul franchise is no longer exclusive to consoles. If this is what you have a problem with....Well that's just the way it is now. ;)

I don't see anything wrong with acknowledging the gap that should be expected between the PC and console versions.
We should be in for a treat. :)

Yep. The director is describing that they want to make the game design a little more clear. Like having a more in depth tutorial or explaining some of the mechanics better. Both of which are ways to possibly expand the audience without damaging the gameplay.

I don't know what the writer is trying to achieve. Hopefully he is saying that he would love to see that dark souls attain skyrim like sales.

Megaton!
Hope there's a PC version on day 1 this time around.

Also, I hope this means they're saving Demon's Souls 2 for next gen. :p

Maybe it's already been said, but Demon's Souls is a Sony property. They could make it, but it would be PS4 game (which is cool by me because if I buy another console it's be PS4).

But for DS2 - bu - fucking - ya!!

Nothing wrong with it. Just laughing at it

I just took it to mean that a more understandable game would go a long way toward giving Dark Souls II headspace and sales more in lines with an Elder Scrolls game, which doesn't really offend me in the slightest.

Oh I totally agree. Check edit, we said almost the she exact thing lol.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die was the best game released for PC this year regardless of its in game graphic options.

Best he I've personally played in a long time.

Lately I encountered maybe a handful of invaders that were not hackers. It wasn't as bad during the release period but now it's really bad.

From NEEDS to implement cheating protection if they want to release a proper Dark Souls 2 on PC imo. I'd gladly sacrifice DX11 effects or whatever PC bonus if they invest their time into that instead.

That's exactly what the director means. The guy directed the best Monster Hunter games ffs. Its the best of both worlds. SURE, Dark Souls 2 may not have the deep mysticism in the storytelling of its lore, but I'm willing to try a new direction in story telling as long as its not completely spoon fed.

One thing that will instantly destroy the Souls game is any changes in its core gameplay design. And the director has come on record saying the game will respect Souls' foundation on true challenge and exploration. That won't change. This might just be the BEST Souls game yet.

I agree, to me the most central point of the Souls games is exploring (and "learning") the fantastically designed levels (when they're not called Lost Izalith). That's what they need to maintain above all else.

One could argue that Dark Souls changed the core gameplay by completely restructuring the game game and adding Estus and bonfires, which I'd say made the game a lot better.

But yeah, I completely understand what you're saying.

Some of the obscurities in Dark Souls were simply game design flaws, not at all part of the game's charm. Pretty much all of the RPG stuff - items, stats, spells, etc - is super vague and not well explained at all. Making all that more self explanatory can only help the game. I don't even care that much if they simplify them because Dark Souls is really about the levels and gameplay.

That said I hope this trailer is not evidence of pre-rendered cutscenes being used in the game itself because that would definitely detract from the atmosphere.

I really, really hope they keep the sprawling interconnected world in the sequel. It was one of my favorite things about Dark Souls.

I can see the designs on the axe quite clearly as well (on consoles ie), it's just that I need to look closer (within the game) in order to do so.

It's not a bullshot I assure you. I can reproduce a similar comparison but I don't think it's the right thread for it.

Sorry for the OT.

That's the thing, textures are the same but you have to zoom in to see them. the pc screen will have the same detail while being just a fraction of the screen.

Honestly, the only worrying thing I've heard is that there's a new hero, which makes me fear we'll be locked into the role of a particular character when coupled with the more "personal" nature of the new trailer. Don't take away my character customization, FROM! I never made great use of it, but I really liked that people could play whoever they wanted, even making gender non-binary by putting it on a slider in DeS and adding a hormones option in DaS. More and better pre-made characters would be fine, though.

I think they mean to say that it's not a direct enough sequel that you play as the same person as DS1, whoever that may be. By that same token I would say the player character of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are "different heroes" even though they're basically blank canvases and you can build them to be identical in appearances and stats if that's what you want.

Agreed. I really liked how you were just a unknown dude exploring this strange world.

Please don't make him a named dude with a personality.

I really, really hope they keep the sprawling interconnected world in the sequel. It was one of my favorite things about Dark Souls.

I can't imagine them doing it any other way; one can hope, though, that they strive to make it even more interconnected, so that you don't wind up with areas like Tomb of the Giants that have only one entrance. All within reason, of course; I wouldn't want them to be connected just for the sake of being connected. The organic nature of the layout of Lordran was such a massive aspect of why it worked so well in the first place.

Surprised they went with Dark Souls II rather than a new ____ Souls. Makes sense if it's a sequel though. Possible Demons Souls II in the future?

I'm definitely excited to see what will happen next with this franchise. That Edge cover looks amazing. It's funny how people have been freaking out about this game when there hasn't even been trailer using he in game engine. I really hope that they can make this game more appealing to the masses and still retain everything that makes it so great. It would be awesome for the development team to be able to sell 5,000,000 copies of this game.

Hopefully the PC version comes with a few more graphical settings this time around. Maybe by the time it gets released there will be 2560x1440 @ 120hz displays that will be offered by big name manufacturers. Would love to see gameplay of this at 120fps. Seeing Dark Souls at 60fps with all of Durante's bells and whistles enhanced the overall experience.

Damn! All these awesome games finally making their way to PC. Now if Tekken, BlazBlue, and Metal Gear were to hit on PC I could retire my PS3 and 360 for good.

Unless Sony throw in a load of cash, FROM have already moved on. If anything, Sony will have to get another developer to make it and go against Dark Souls.

Probably never.

Sony owns the Demon's IP and namco/From can make significantly more profit by making souls games multiplatform.

Meanwhile Sony still makes money off the Dark IP because of licensing and doesn't have to take on any of the risk in publishing.

Wait, does Sony make any money beyond FROM licensing PhyreEngine?
