Tomb Raider VGA 'Survivor' Trailer

Have you seen the "survival instinct" feature?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJHjkpJMFGI&t=2m49s

It looks like the game plays itself.

Instinct is supposedly optional, but what's the deal with the platforming? There are areas where it looks like the game auto-corrects an off kilter jump, which leads to an awkward gliding motion. It would be a bummer if most of the platforming is "on rails" like that (seems unnecessary if the instinct ability exists to help daft players navigate the level).

I think he's referring to the whole "protect her" thing, which has been said literally once by some fucktard in his only interview about the game (and he hasn't done one since). If that hadn't been said there wouldn't be anything to joke about.

It wasn't only Rosenburg that went all "protect her". Around the same time Brian Horton echoed the protect her nonsense in an interview. And Karl Stewart said the same in an interview about how they considered an Enslaved style escort aspect ("We decided to drop that aspect because we realised this game should all be about protecting Lara and seeing her struggle with the situation, rather than watching her protect someone else.").

To be fair though this is not a first. All of Crystal's previous TR games had that "feature".

They included manual grab in Anniversary if I remember correctly, but not in either of their other games.

But really, who was making a mockery of it before it came from Ron Rosenburg's mouth? He's also the idiot who said the word "rape" in an interview.

Wait, what? I was just reviewing the previous thread and came across this post:

So not only can we not swim, now we can't even fall off ledges..........?

Dying from falling off places is the soul of Tomb Raider! It's the one thing that makes you consistently nervous.

Screw this game.

So you can only fall to your death when it isn't disruptive to the emotional attachment you have for Lara...

the fuck?

If they just said, "We wanted to make a modern action game starring Lara Croft." I really wouldn't care. Their reasoning for doing things that everyone else is doing, as if it was some unique idea, is baffling and hilarious

the PR for this game has been a disaster so far. But after watching that trailer, I'm really looking forward to the game.

Day 1...

lets not forget the fact that before Drake, There was Lara..

Am I the only one seeing some similarities with Alan Wake ??

I like the vibe I get from the game's trailers.
I just don't like what I'm hearing about things they're changing that are kind of essential about Tomb Raider. Like what's with the comment about not being able to fall of ledges or swim? WTF?

Not being able to fall from ledges: I really dont like to fall to my death if I made a mistake, and yes, you can probably jump from the ledge and die if that's what you want to do. Still, pointless. Die because of an enemy or missing a jump. There will many, many ways to die in this game.

Survivor mode: You can probably turn that off (just like instinct on Hitman), and if you can't, DONT ever use it if you feel it'll make your game too easy.

Also, if you have your mind set that this game sucks and it's shit, why the heck you still interested in reading a thread about a game that you think it sucks and it's shit?

And yes, there will be tombs to raid.

If the trailer is representation of the entire game, I'm probably going to wait for a price drop, a lot of it screams "epic set pieces" and 3 uncharted games were enough, not to mention I don't know how it actually plays outside of those, all the trailer tell me is that I'm playing a straight forward action game with a bow (or guns).

Other than that the trailer looks good.

Can someone avatarize this for me?

after seeing the trailer, I can see why Tomb Raider fans will be disappointed with the trailer, but I wonder how Uncharted fans feel toward the game. as an Uncharted fans, I'm obviously the target demographic for this game, I felt like I should enjoy the gameplay, but after seeing the trailer, I'm not really feeling it.

it feel like none of the 'fun' in uncharted is in here, Lara Croft felt too serious or overly dramatic. I like the campy fun tone in Uncharted games. playing as Drake is fun, even if sometimes it's just following the setpieces, his quips and witty remark add a lot to it imo. even when Drake got stabbed/bleed in his stomach like Uncharted 2 intro, he make funny comment about it.

edit: I think Drake is the reason Uncharted is successful, like, if someday ND make Uncharted games where it totally copy old Tomb Raider formula with emphasis on puzzle solving and platforming instead of shooting and setpieces, I can't help thinking it will still be successful. although maybe that's just my bias opinion as Drake's fan

SOON.

I like it too.

I'm a huge Uncharted fan, and I'm actually really excited about this. It looks great. I think Uncharted is more action adventure dramedy (in tone), while this is more horror adventure with survival overtones (maybe like... the second act of Peter Jackson's King Kong?). I'm actually hoping they get the horror vibe across well.

Holy shit...

OK, what are the chances that this is only the first hour of the game and the rest is very metroid esque with survival elements like they suggested when the game was first announced? :(

Are you kidding? Uncharted was very clearly taking inspiration from Tomb Raider...
not really, gameplay focus is never the same, uncharted is always a shooter since 1st game. And you can argue that theme and setting is more indiana jones than tomb raider.

Maybe if you're pretending that Tomb Raider invented pulp fiction. Or are you seriously going to argue that the gameplay was influenced by Tomb Raider, even though they play nothing alike?

No I'm not but I was around in 2007 and I remember comparisons immediately being drawn to Tomb Raider. I mean how many video games let you raid tombs for archaeological treasure? Platforming mixed with gunplay? Sure it had more of an Indiana Jones vibe, but Uncharted drew inspiration from Tomb Raider, I'm sure.

Yeah, there were comparisons. Made by people that had no clue what they were talking about. You don't raid tombs in Uncharted. And the platforming is minimal compared to the combat. It's ridiculous.

Uncharted has more similarities with RE4 and Gears of War than with Tomb Raider.

Am I the only one that wish Lara was a bit more muscular? She'd probably look a bit less pretty but it'd make the whole thing a lot more credible. She doesn't look at all like she could beat all those guys in hth combat.

Fans tend to be delusionally optimistic. See Sonic fans. The cognitive dissonance is so strong they believe they like it. The GAF thread for Sonic 06 is pretty humorous.

"I'm a Tomb Rider fan and like everything Tomb Raider. I don't like what I'm seeing, but it's called Tomb Raider. Resolve dissonance by believing I like what I'm seeing."

It could be a good game, but it looks like it should have been a new IP. It looks like it takes a game series that had its own unique adventure platforming and puzzle-solving gameplay and turned it into a generic modern scripted action game. There's no Tomb Raider in this footage.

As for the game, same old same old.
I'll wait until they actually show something they consider "for the old school fans" before keep ranting on it, as i've said more than enough on this game.

One thing though, i really can't stand her new voice.
I don't know who her voice actress is and and don't really give a shit how pretty she is, her performance irritates me, i couldn't play an entire game like that. (same thing is happening in AC3 for Connor)

I dunno, I don't see how the game is salvageable from footage of Lara going to town on people an axe.

I feel like a lot of the new stuff might have been really cool if it was just in addition to the classic platforming/puzzling. Like I can't begrudge them for trying to change the combat and I think it does look better than recent TRs, but there shouldn't be so much of it. Some setpiece driven events here and there would be cool. And just think if they could make the platforming within them challenging. That'd be fun. Same goes for the upgrade system and the gear gating/optional tombs or a different style of story. But instead of being new things added to the core formula, they seem to be replacing that essential TR stuff and as a result, it feels a lot less appealing.

Still curious how the hubs and gear-gating will go. They seem like an afterthought now when it seemed like a big new addition when they first wrote about this game.

Looks like a game in the Uncharted style of holding up on the analog stick to get to the next whack-a-mole minigame and doing it for 6 hours. Yay.

Also, this

I sure hope this isn't a heavy that's gonna a take a couple shotgun blasts at close range and not even flinch.

I'm all for Tomb Raider reinventing itself, but the fact there seems to be nothing about discovering any real tombs is disappointing. I really hope there is more to the story than just trying to survive the island from inhabitants.

There really is a lot of page-taking from uncharted too. I guess its ok, but from the animation to the overall quality of each scene, its not nearly up to par when it comes to being cinematic.

I never would've thought Uncharted would've had this much of an influence in the industry.

Oh please... If this game stuck with the original Tomb Raider formula and changed nothing to cater to the average gamer, it would have never been made in the first place.

Everyone bitches that developers are catering too much to the call of duty crowd, but in reality thats who they HAVE to cater to. They will make no god damn money unless they do.

Sure every now and then a gem comes up... and I love old school tomb raider, but your kidding yourself if you think this game would sell without explosions and dudes with guns.

Edit: Do you really think that THIS is acceptable combat in the year 2013?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r8RXQ3ZDME

lol, it looks less like she's trying to survive the island's inhabitants and more like they need to survive her!

I feel like I will probably enjoy this quite a bit. I just think it might be disappointing as a TR game. There just aren't many series out there with the focus more on platforming puzzlesolving like it, so it seemingly getting away from that hurts that much more I think.
