I thought that snowy landscape looked like the Painted World, to me.

Also: holy fuck yes, Dark Souls 2! Straight into my eyeballs, please.

Funny that I can't find the music that was in the Announcement trailer and the Project Dark trailer anywhere.

Wish they used it somewhere.

Hmm.

The correct penalty is having to fight the boss again from the beginning. Requiring the player to run through the same area over and over is a frustrating waste of time. It literally brings nothing positive to the experience.

While I would agree with you in any other game, for me the entire point of Demon/Dark Souls is that any enemy can kill you if you're careless. Thus, re-running the same area is not at all a rote, brainless task (unless you're dying a disproportionate amount of time in a particular single boss). I personally found myself dying more during stages than boss themselves most of the time in both games (with some exceptions like Ornstein and Smough). Even Capra Demon killed me less times than Lower Undead Burg itself. I've not yet finished Demon Souls, so that might change in that particular game, I guess (it hasn't so far).

What's more, by having most locales branch out and being exploration-friendly, plus items not being taken away from you when you die, succesive stage runs take less time, and you might even find stuff you didn't the first time. Further, it forces you to learn how to fight "regular" enemies safely and efficiently, which I often found more exhilarating than boss fights themselves.

Finally, bosses aren't nearly as intimidating when there is no sense of loss associated with dying to them. Part of the charm of both DS games are the feeling of being scared, and with constant checkpoints, any new boss becomes just an obstacle to throw yourself against. Gaping Dragon was outright terrifying when I first fought it, because the run to get to him (and those goddamned Basilisks) made it so. I ended up killing it on my first try, though (apparently I got super lucky and he never did that cloud thing). Would the experience be the same if I had had a bonfire just before it? I sincerely doubt it.

If I am correct SCEJ helped with development of Demon Souls. If SCEJ was to develope Demon Souls 2 would you guys be interested or dismiss it because it's not From?

Personally I think this is big mistake from Sony. I think they should invest in Demon Souls 2 for PS4, that could move some consoles. It's niche title, but you know that there are hardcore gamers that would but a console just for that game.

Lot of people would dismiss it because it's not From unless the game turns out to be great.

This is the opening movie of the game?if not dark souls' announcement trailer was realtime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc8fsve6u8M

Teaser was for 'Project Dark' month before that trailer.

Judging by the rugged, snowy landscape, it probably just takes place in another "country"..."city state"... however the fuck the territories in the Dark Souls universe describe themselves.

You can see some snowy mountains from the Nothern Undead Asylum. Or it's the Painted World of Ariamis.

the game wasn't THAT hard was it?

Your "easy" may be my "hard". People are different you know..

Which is why we've had optional difficulty options or god modes or cheats in games since the beginning.

I hate playing Halo at anything less than Legendary, but understand why mostly anyone else wouldn't choose that difficulty level. And that's the thing; at least in that game people get to choose what fits their gaming style or skills. And at the same time it doesn't affect my experience.

I think I spent about 130 hours playing Dark Souls, of which I spent 80 trying to grind my way up to a skill level where I could start to enjoy the full experience.. for me that is way too big of an barrier normally. I'm an old fan of Kings Field and would like to get access to the nice atmosphere these games have at an earlier stage..

I suspect a large chunk of customers bought it by word of mouth and stopped playing it even before getting out of the first area..so i think a sequel will not even get close to DS sales numbers without a clear message about ensuring a better balance for "normal" people. And that's what I think the devs are now realizing.

Btw: i cannot wait for this game :)

Anybody known more about that "director" Tomohiro Shibuya? All I can find under his name is that he's some chief graphics designer at DAG Inc. and as such has been minorly involved in the Monster Hunter series. No prior involvement with Dark Souls, doesn't look particularly connected to From at all...

Yeah that's weird...maybe Namco put him in that position? I guess we'll learn more about this in the future but right now this doesn't sound good. :/

hope the frame rate is better

gfx is fine but frame rate can improve

If anything positive can come out of Namco being more involved in this it's probably a more polished game tech-wise.

But right now frame-rate should be the least of our concerns about the game.

Hm, well, maybe DAG is doing the CG time time. From used Shirogumi in the past.

Yui Tanimura, while new to Souls, appears to be a From guy at least, was involved in Armored Core 2 as planner.

One further reoccuring staff in the Souls series so far is lead programmer Jun Ito, let's see if he's still involved.

I'm more concerned about the framerate than meaningless speculation about dumbing down. At least one of them genuinely effects the game while other is pointless drivel.

It definitely seemed like FROM was well aware of the framerate problems in areas like Blighttown, so I'm figuring that optimization will be a new focus for the sequel.

I do remember them apologizing a lot about it, I'd be fine if graphically it was exactly the same as Dark Souls but focused more on the optimization.

Should try this someday, but I never hear about anything other than "everything will kill you over and over again and you'll like it".

I had a machine that smacked me in the nuts every time I pulled a lever and that got boring after a while, so why should I try this?

Seriously, how is the story, atmosphere, characters, are there any villages, exploration...?

It's more like everything will kill you over and over. Until you learn to kill everything just as effectively

Incredible on all fronts

There is lots of exploration. Story has a minimalist approach but the world building is second to none.

Jesus Christ, there a lot of misconceptions about this game and the challenge it offers, apparently.
