Tell us how you really feel.

But seriously, at this point I disagree with you because, as I've said, I quite like the characters. I'll admit to having issues with the combat, but I'm slowly getting over things.

I wanted to like the characters, but there's just nothing to them. None of them have an arc or any layer below their most basic character traits. Which works in some stories, but not one that's played straight like this.

Big Bo is just a rowdy dude. He likes pretty girls. He says this about three times in the game.
The British dude is just a no-nonsense dude who thinks the Yankees are just too dang loud!!
The British girl has no personality. They don't pay any attention to her in the story.
The Chinese girl is serious but a little less serious after she hangs out with you for a bit. Her two subordinates died before she meets up with you but she never shows any emotion about it.
And then her character changes completely at the end with no reasoning behind it and it's the worst plot twist ever. Despite hunting hollow children for a while, she seems to have show no internal conflict when she learns she's a child of one. Also, she's immediately hostile towards the rest of the group, even before they've shown they're stubborn and loyal to the code. And there's no effort to try and talk it out, it's just this stupid JOIN ME OR THEM DAN... YOU MADE YOUR CHOICE SO I'M GONNA KILL YOU AND NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT IT.
And then there's Cain. He's a French robot. He has no other characteristics. It was a relief at first that he didn't spout a bunch of French stereotypes and jokes. But then he just ends up being a guy who sometimes says french things. How interesting.
And there's the Japanese resistance dude who
shows a bit of emotion about finding out a friend was a hollow child and seeing him die. He also shows hatred towards the New Order or whatever and explains why he and others have become freedom fighters/terrorists.
This guy is the most developed character in the game.
Oh, and I guess there's the Japanese cop who from the moment he was introduced was obviously going to learn about the evils of the Amada corporation at some point and join up with your crew. Because this is a game full of lazy, cliche writing.

I don't know how you can like these characters when they're non-characters. They're so dull. I don't get it!

On a scale of "meh" to "very", how dumb would it be to listen to the GOTY podcast not having played ME3? I really want to but haven't had the time for a game like that, but I also know of a few minorly spoilery things, ie when the game came out Jeff tweeted that
his Shepard died, which isn't really that spoilery considering you could die at the end of 2
, plus everyone being butthurt about the ending or whatever. I don't want the entire game to be spoiled for me but wouldn't mind a few things as the game has already been out and talked about, and I always enjoy the GOTY podcasts.

Nevermind the GOTY, you might want to watch out for this week's podcast. Sounds like there's going to be about an hour of complete and total spoilers for ME3.

As for GOTY, yes, you're going to get ME3 spoilers. Deep ones, probably.

Man, this year's podcasts are going to be....strange? I can't recall going into the process without any clear favorites like this year.

If you can't see Walking Dead and XCOM as the clear favorites, you haven't been paying attention.

One could be tempted to throw out a "Stop liking what I don't like" reference right about now. As for why I do, I can't really say. I enjoy their banter and I think they're funny. For now, that's good enough for me.

Walking Dead certainly, but Jeff has been lukewarm on that game for months. I could see a scenario where that's a reluctant winner.

Also, most of the crew had technical issues with X-COM, I could see that playing into discussions.

My comment was more in line with the last two years worth of awards. Mass Effect 2 and Skyrim/Saint's Row 3 were clear, clear favorites going into the process.

Don't forget the Walking Dead had the save bug too and that hit at least one of them.

The same way that XCOM and Walking Dead are now? Yes, they had technical issues, but they let all that really wash over them. Remember: They gushed about that game for like 5 weeks straight. How many games get that much talk?

I'm calling it: It's going to be a repeat of last year, but with TWD being blocked by Jeff in favor of XCOM.

If they dismiss X-COM for the bugs I'm going to be so sad. Skyrim is fucking bug central, and (anecdotal, I know) I never had a problem with X-Com in 40 hrs of play. (PC version)

For sure. What I'm saying is, as someone who hasn't played ME3 but wants to, is aware of some of the controversy/disappointment with the game in genereal, and loves the Bombcast and GOTY discussion in general, is it worth it to skip out on two podcasts or just listen and have a few things spoiled before I play the game?

We still haven't heard what Jeff thinks about TWD after playing it. Maybe it will win him over.

I could see the other four guys all voting for it and Jeff going for XCOM, which means TWD wins.

I think I would be happy with either of those winning. Both fantastic games, although I would probably prefer XCOM.

There's no reason that you don't have listen to all the podcasts. I'd wait for timestamps on the ME3 stuff on this next podcast and just not listen to that section. Then selectively fast forward on the GOTY stuff when they get really in depth on ME3. Easy.

One of Brad's comments in this thread has led me to suspect he may not back TWD over XCOM, as he has issues with Episode 5 of TWD. But if I'm misinterpreting your position, rudds, please forgive me!

The real question is, which one of them will choose to vote for a game they haven't played because it sounds more "legitimate" than the game they enjoyed most.

That's the process sometimes, man. IT takes 5 guys like 8 hours to hash out 15ish awards. Imagine having to deal with fillibusters from 25-30 people.

I'm not saying it's right, or that's ideal, but when dealing with a group effort sometimes you have to compromise on shitty stuff.

EDIT : Oops, thought you were talking about something else, not Brad's "legitimacy" nightmare from last year. That is 100% bullshit.

Unless you mean the enemies :d

if they're going to get serious about technical issues, this would be a good year to do it. TWD, AC3, and Hotline Miami all have widespread, significant issues.

Anyone else going through last years GOTY podcasts? Still can't believe Ryan turned heel. The guy is excited for Saints Row on the day 1 podcast.

Also, when Jeff busts out the big guns. "Want me to put another one out there? Dark Souls. I don't think bad games should be on this list."

Really looking forward to the list this year. If only to see the crazy comments that might come. Gotta start and finish the Walking Dead though, they'll probably spoil the shit out of it (rightfully so).

This sounded bogus the first time I heard it, but since then I've had a friend try to play that game, and spent like 2 hours trying to beat one knight at the beginning of some forest, admitting defeat when he took an alternate route and got molested by some trees. He sold the game a few days later.

Even he refused to call it a bad game.

They dropped mk9 last year from the top 10 purely because of online bugs. I thought it was lame because NRS had fixed the issues by that time and that online play wasn't the big aspect of the game (it was the story mode, challenge tower and good gameplay mechanics). I was shocked, I thought it'd be in their top 5 for sure.

Oh, I love the series, even if I haven't finished a game in it yet. I think the comment is just one of those fun 'aw snap' moments.

I had a friend try it out too and he got kind of addicted. Never beat it but he got further then me (I think).

The problem is that I know Jeff means it. Another problem is that I actually have no idea if he's ever played it.

The "asshole contrarian" is one of my least favourite Jeff Gerstmann skits, to put it one way. :p Let's hope it's mostly absent from the GOTYcasts, but I already fear he's got something lined up for The Walking Dead.

ME3 will win GOTY from the way they will cut down the other games. Calling it.

I would laugh so hard.

Honestly, I don't really care what wins, because all GOTY is is the sum total of the opinion of those five people. Why should that affect what I personally enjoyed this year?

So, yeah. Borderlands 2 for LIFE!

It's the zombies. He'll filibuster the zombies.

Its still early, but in the goty media picks thread, Mass Effect 3 and the Walking Dead are the only two games with more than one win. I don't think ME3 will win giantbomb, but I can see it taking home the most wins this year

So wha is the brad fillabuster this year . Hopefully assura's wrath for GOTY

Best DLC is going to get HEATED

Brad (Leviathan) vs. Vinny (Asura's Wrath)

I would love to see ME3 win if only to see how they justify it. Like, how low they can go into fooling themselves and pretend everything's alright and still come out of that podcast not absolutely broken :P

It won't happen of course, but hey. Nah, in all honesty, I don't mind what they pick, what I usually mind is Brad's unbearable stubbornness. Sorry Brad, we all know it's true.

The real question is, which one of them will choose to vote for a game they haven't played because it sounds more "legitimate" than the game they enjoyed most.

Yeah, I'm really hoping there won't be a lot of, "Hey man, you have to pick your battles. I'm just happy ______ made it on the list. I enjoyed it on an academic level. It's more ironic fun than real fun." this year.

Or my personal favorite, "It's just not that much of a game." Although with Asura's Wrath and The Walking Dead, it might be a given.

Indeed. While I was sitting back and collecting my thoughts about my personal top 10, I had to spend a lot of time remembering what games I had a ton of functional problems with. TWD was kind to me, only giving me one error that simply required me to exit and reload, but AC3, FEZ, Papo Y Yo, FTL, Dragon's Dogma, Warp and ESPECIALLY XCOM all gave me pretty consistent problems when it came down to simply playing them. That stuff needs to be considered.

As for MK being marked down for online issues, that's totally fair. I did the same with the Ultimate Marvel when that came out with completely broken online play. They eventually fixed it, but one shouldn't ignore a game's problems because they decide to fix them 3 months later. If we did, Hydrophobia would have been one of the best games of the year last year.

I want an Anime Editor's Award for Best Anime. Toss-up between Asura's Wrath, Persona 4 Arena and Virtue's Last Reward.

I doubt Brad played P4A.

I never take the Giantbomb crews opinions as gospel. I just love hearing the banter and how the actual game of the year discussion is just a slagging match where they shit on a game more than praise it. Makes for fun listening.

This year was a weird year - I cannot think of a single stand-out GOTY. I did enjoy TWD a lot, but as the game was basically a slighty interactive CGI film (and this is coming from a lover of adventure games), for it to win GOTY on its story alone, it would have to be a near flawless one - but it just isn't (it was very uneven, especially episode 4 and 1).

I did really like XCOM, but the bugs made it far too frustrating. Probably need to go back now that there have been a couple patches.

Basing it on what gave me the best gaming experience, I'd say my GOTY is probably War of the Roses.
