Peter Weller is going to be in this. They haven't said what character he plays and have managed to divert all attention from him with speculation about who Cumberbatch is playing.

That's why some people think Weller is the real villain and this is all a bait and switch.

Then why is Cumberbatch returning for his vengeance? And battling Spock?

Unless it's a three way war between Weller, Cumberbatch, and the Enterprise.

Maybe there is more than one villain and they join together super hero style to take on the Federation.

Seriously.... why so serious?

Part of the fun is having that over-the-top villain. I love that stuff. Star Trek has had some great mastermind villains. Some corny, some not, but all really fun to watch.

The prior film was nearly done in by how absolutely horrid the villain was. Every moment he or his ridiculous ship spent onscreen was such a blow to the film that I'm still not sure the entire affair equals out to be worth watching. Those sequences killed my brain cells faster than even the stupidest moments of Insurrection or Nemesis.

It did, however, handle character banter and light humor with surprising competency. So to see that the sequel is being hyped as a villain-fest and action blockbuster gives me little hope that the few things going well for the prior film might be built upon.

I'm seriously not feeling Alice Eve's new haircut. Looks terrible.

Yeah, I really don't like that.

The haircut isn't what bothers me in that shot. That smile is really creepy. That scream from later in the trailer was weird too. I'm worried about her. I hope she's a better actor than those scenes make her out to be.

I feel weird that the gif of that scream looks so sexual. In that shot, she's smiling like a damn robot.

Precursor to Data!?

Alice Eve isn't here to act. She's here to Alice Eve. Now shut your pie holes!

Alice Eve's haircut distracts from the Alice Eve of Alice Eve. Every single photo of her out there, she has a better haircut than this. It's like they went out of their way to give her a terri-bad haircut.

Press event:

Alice Eve is Carol Marcus
Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison
Joseph Gatt is GATT2000
Pike has a cane
Klingon faces will be revealed and will have ridges, facial hair, and piercings. There are 12 people casted as Klingons.
The Klingon scene in the trailer is on Qo'noS
Chekhov wears both red and gold tunics. Gold first as he originally wore, then possible transferred to a new job
Scotty's little alien sidekick is back

So if they're on Qo'noS then the Klingons must play a big part in this story, much bigger than the teaser suggests.

Maybe Cumberbatch's speech isn't even directed at Earth but is directed at the Klingons.

Trailer 2 (domestic trailer) is 1:50 vs the 1:17 Trailer 1 (Japanese/International trailer).

Trailer 1 was specifically targeted at overseas audiences that don't know or don't like Star Trek, which is why it de-emphasized being Star Trek. The domestric Trailer 2 will look more Star Trek.

Details

1. Shows shots of corridors and bridge of an empty USS Enterprise
2. More detailed shots of Kirk & McCoy running through red alien jungle and the Volcano (now both known to be on planet named Nibiru, featured in 9-minute IMAX preview)
3. Chekov seen running through USS Enterprise wearing red shirt (unclear if he is assigned to Security of Engineering
4. John Harrison shown in the brig with Kirk and Spock watching (from photo released yesterday)
5. Short clip of Federation flag being folded over (possibly) coffin
6. Someone in space suit shooting through space at very high speeds
7. Spock jumps off the top of a skyscraper (seems to be in San Francisco)
8. Unknown small ship dodging debris (possibly structures) being chased by another ship (which looked a bit like Klingon design)
9. Shot of large room (possibly shuttle bay or cargo hold) filled with tubes which have small windows (or possibly control panels) on the top

That last point indicates maybe Khan again. Point 6 could indicate Gary Mitchell.

There will be a Trailer 3 (theatrical trailer) in Feb/March 2013.

JJ interview:

"The whole thing, not just his backstory, but his agenda, his plan, his secret, all that is what, for me at least, makes him such a frightening and cool villain," Abrams said. "Also, the real villains — when they’re not just two-dimensional, angry vengeful types — don’t see themselves as the bad guy. They are the good guy and have complete rationale and motivation. So true to form, the character that Benedict plays has an absolute sense of right and wrong, and he’s on the right side."

That indicates more Khan than Mitchell. You'd think Mitchell wouldn't hide his god powers while Khan may hide his identity.

Who gives a shit who he is. I thought that by now people would have learned to stop buying into the Lindelof/Abrams secrecy ploys. Whoever it is, it won't nearly live up to the time you're putting into worrying about who it is.

Abrams' films are enjoyable for the story and never, ever the plot points he shrouds in secrecy - which always fall short.

It's fun to speculate.

M. Night Shyamalan II?

im guessing this is a sequal to ENT's three episode arc about the genetcs with the last episode explaining how the Klingons in TOS Original Universe had smaller ridges.

That was a fun arc.

yeah it was. Heck there was a lot of good star trek fiction fan service stuff near the end of Enterprise. Shame so much damage as done before it got there. I would have watched another series or 2 of Enterprise if it kept going were it was going.

Anyway right now I am going with Peter Weller as the real villain/mastermind behind everything. Maybe he plays Khan, maybe some random Klingon warlord out to destroy the federation. Who knows.

Berman and crew getting the boot was the best thing to happen to Enterprise. Just too late as you said damage was done. Was going to finally get into the Earth/Romulus War, Enterprise refit etc

Speculation below: (spoilered as it mentions stuff in trailers and new stuff above)

This is just where my brain is at after the latest info, I'd be shocked if this is even remotely what happens.

At this stage I'm leaning towards Khan again, John Harrisson is likely a name adopted by the character so as to hide his past. He joins Starfleet as a Cadet (see black uniform) with some sort of tangent about wanting to make humans the dominant force in the galaxy by taking out the Klingons. He would probably view them as more of a threat to him as he is a superior being to humans and therefore not worthy of his attention.

So why is he so young and able to join Starfleet?

Edit: Not saying you are wrong, just that nothing feels like it fits at the moment.

Yes, the new trailer is much better.

Where did you see it?

Nah you're fine. That's literally what my brain put together with those snippets, no indepth thought at all.

The youth thing could be an age regeneration thing or something like that. Maybe he doesn't, but perhaps he
is found by the enterprise and just thrown into a uniform as he has no clothes
.

Like I said, no idea really but definitely interest increased.
