Sorry bros but it's a foregone conclusion that Man of Steel will be the best looking superhero movie ever made.

This looks good.
Something between Malick and a classy liquor commercial.

Posts commenting on the majestic Superman Returns shots, god damn thank you Gaf. I thought I was the only one. Superman Returns has parts that are BEAUTIFUL.

I really hope Zack Snyder finds a way to fit this song into the movie.

Returns is a good litmus test for whether you have ADHD or not.

Much less stigma in admitting to having ADHD than to liking Superman Returns. I still can't figure out what the hell that film was trying to do. Perhaps they should have handed out adderall in the theaters before the film started.

Returns may not have been action packed (I still don't understand the demand to see Superman smash through things), but he still had that a presence to him in the film. The scene where he changes in the elevator, for example, or when he appears at the roof of the Daily Planet blowing out the cigarette. Singer evoked the mythic power and romanticism of Superman just by how he panned the camera around him. I dont think we've seen any other comic book adaptation achieve that yet

Of course, cause Superman lifting things and posing captures his mythic aura or whatever much better. I don't mean to be snippy but Superman Returns brings out the worst in me. That film had no heart. :(
I'm willing to take a film that sticks with the standard of aliens, explosions, yelling, and powerful punches as long it can actually tell the Superman story. I am content with Superman TAS in movie form which Man of Steel kind of feels like. I did like how Singer captured Superman's flight and gave him a sense of momentum, so I'll give you that.

thank you

This version of Lois had more personality and charm than all of them put together

(forgot to mention I'd hit dat)

I'm not a big Superman fan, but Teri Hatcher was the reason why I sat down every week and watched Lois & Clark. To be honest, though, I thought the show was fun when I look back at it now. Dean Cain was a fun, cheesy Superman. Watching the show recently, it just screams "90's!" and I think I love it.

But again, I'm not a Superman fan. I loved the Reeves movies as a kid, but fell out of interest with the character in the 90's, when I was in high school.

Anyway, this new trailer is looking fantastic. I always felt that Superman could be an awesome character if handled properly. At the very least, the cinematography on display in the trailer is looking amazing. I'm looking forward to this. I haven't looked forward to a Superman movie ever.

Full disclosure: I liked the Singer Superman as a throwback to the Donner movies I grew up with in the 80's. I was disappointed in the lack of things for Superman to punch, but I felt it had some fun and charm in the small things, if not the big picture. The cinematography in that one was also pretty good, if I recall.

I don't see why there has to be such mud-flinging in this thread though. But then, thisisneogaf.gif.

I think Returns captured a lot of nostalgia for certain people. It also highlighted the heritage and alienation angle of Superman, which no real film had done before. Plus, I mean, watching Routh save Kitty, save the airplane, the elevator shirt rip, etc... there was some winning moments in that film.

did anyone else think of this during the part where he cracks the ground as he's taking off/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl_5UwS57X8

would be interesting if they were going down a similar path, perhaps even showing superman before he starts to take care and treat the world like 'cardboard'.

You can't have your character talk about worrying about killing people then demolishing floors of office buildings. Otherwise a great scene though. Supes walk was a bit dodgy.

Man Of Steel Trailer #2 mixed with Journey to the Line:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNb5T_2dQyI&feature=youtu.be

I did my best to mix in Journey to the Line. I had to cut the first half because it just didn't work together at all with how the scenes were cut, and also because of the lack of dialogue. :P

Hopefully someone can cut the music from this trailer and add Journey To The Line.

Edit: already happened? that was quick

Edit 2: but hopefully someone can do it better because that sucks

With the different and minor lack of footage differentiating the comic con trailer and the latest one, it's pretty difficult to put it together. BUT if you use the actual comic con trailer as a base (audio and even for visual cues to an extent), instead of the journey to the line track, then it does kind of work out to an extent.

For instance, the first 35 seconds in the one below I made are entirely there because of the lack of footage. But most of the rest of it gets on cue after some fiddeling around with the timing:

Good stuff. You guys need to teach me how to separate the voices from the music. :P edit: Oh you actually used the audio from CC leak, haha. Clever.

Also from what I can remember of the script, they get his power level about right. He's not stupidly overpowered.

Is it odd that I always thought Superman was lame when I was younger, and only in the last decade or so have I started to warm up to the character? Anyone else feel this way?

My god that is amazing.

I thought he was kind of lame as a teen, but in recent years I started reading more comics and now I love him.

I've been that way with most DC characters actually. Except Batman. I like him a less than I used to. (He still cool.)

Journey to the line makes everything epic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqeitdH5FX0

Yes, yes it does. Always loved it used in the Pearl Harbor teaser since there's not as much V.O as the theatrical one relying mostly on the music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqv9-_TqTUk

Man I was obsessed with the track when that teaser debuted and I hadn't seen The Thin Red Line so I didn't know where it originated from and thought it was an original track for Pearl Harbor so I ended up downloading countless versions of "Pearl Harbor Trailer Music" from Napster at the time. It wasn't until a couple of years later when I found out where the track came from when my dad was watching Thin Red Line with the surround sound going full blast while I was upstairs and hearing the village scene so I ran downstairs to finally figure out where it came from!

So uh..back to Man of Steel...I guess those leaked toy commercials may of leaked more of the story than originally thought?

This is what happened to me too. By my 20s I fell in love with the character, but hated him when I was in junior high.

There's something about the character that's more relatable when you're older. I can't relate to Batman losing both his parents, which is his angst. I can totally relate to Superman's feeling of not belonging, in spite of having friends and family around. It may not be as tragic, but I understand it. (I can't relate to his being an alien, or losing his birth parents, or being adopted, but stay with me here.)

The core struggles of the character are easier to understand when you're older too. What is justice? What is truth? What is good? What is evil? The direction to take Superman in isn't about what kind of baddie can beat him up, but what kind of moral challenge can he overcome? This is a big reason why it is difficult to make a good video game about him. But I think that with a lot of the moral grays we're seeing depicted in video games, now is th perfect time to explore this.

Plus, lots of punching and eye lasers.

Based on Singer's summary, his Returns sequel would've been a complete change in tone. We'll never know if it worked though.

Yep. Total change in tone. As he described it "Wrath of Kahn" stuff. Especially
Brainiac entering Jason's body, ageing him into his late 20's giving him Superpowers and having SUperman beat the living shit out of his own son.

Fucked up but hey... None of us have much love for that kid.

lol didn't know about the whole aging stuff. I like Brainiac but that would've been stupid.

So will they be skipping the whole Clark Kent being a reporter thing? I'd actually be okay with that. The way the character is being portrayed, it doesn't look likely or realistic.

I'm just glad that Singer has the presence of mind to state that if he were able to remake Returns, it would be a completely different movie. It's not common to hear directors own up to their abortion projects so candidly.

The comic con teaser showed him entering an office building while putting on glasses. There's no way that building wasn't the Daily Planet, so yeah. He'll definitely still be a reporter.

Returns is a good litmus test for whether you have ADHD or not.

Yeah its slower paced ...but its also cut and paste of the first movie. I mean come on 20 mins in and you had to be thinking..."this isnt going to be some real estate scheme again is it??"

The only new things were Superman is a dead beat dad and a Voyeur.

The biggest problem with Returns is conceptual. They never came up with a good enough reason for him to leave.

If this is a sequel to Superman II (and it was - specifically, a sequel to a director's cut of Superman II that didn't even exist when they made the movie) then THAT Superman wouldn't leave Earth for 5 years to visit Krypton. He wouldn't leave period. His last words to the President are "I won't let you down again" or something along those lines.

And then he apparently up and bounced to outer-space to go look at a planet he knows DAMN WELL exploded.

It's like when Alien 3 decided to start with an Egg in a place an egg couldn't possibly have been at the end of ALIENS. It fundamentally breaks the movie before it begins. It prompts an audience to make a huge leap just to START the movie. You shouldn't start your film asking everyone in the audience to suspend more disbelief than Superman himself could lift.

I think it was something like...
After a battle with Superman his body is too damaged to continue. He wants to use Supermans body because his Kryptonian DNA will work with his programming. Superman is way too strong so he goes with Jason instead.

I don't remember Singer saying anything about Brainiac taking over the kid's body and aging him. I do know that he said he would kill the kid in the sequel though and have Supes go all Wrath of Khan. I don't know where that other weird shit came from.

Would be cool if the story revolved around Supes sacrificing his son to Darkseid to save the Earth as an ultimatum.
