We "kind" of do that in "some" states, but the process is still full of holes and is easily exploitable by design, and any attempts to tighten it up are rebuffed. That's the problem.
I think we need to make it a federal issue instead of a state issue. I actually know a guy who is legally not allowed to buy guns in ca because of a conviction for assault. He can however just go to Oklahoma, get a state ID, and proceed to purchase an assault rifle and a handgun. I watched him do it.....

jesus, what the fuck??... 27 ?and 14 of the are kids?.. what kind of fucked up person would do such a thing? Fuuuuk itz'ssoo easy to kill people with guns.

The first question I ask myself as a gun owner is:

Do we have a system that gives citizens the access to use their second amendment rights -and- at the same time have the same system set up to keep firearms from those we as a society deem unstable: criminals, ex-cons, mentally unstable, maniacs..etc?

The answer is no.

Second question: What changes can be made to deal with the latter and not compromise the rights of the former?

Per local news: "An entire classroom is unaccounted for at this time."

Please God be false.

If the reports are true, the gunman used an automatic rifle, which is already illegal. While I dont oppose increased monitoring of gun sales and owners, this highlights that outlawing them will not prevent this form of attack.

Yea, exactly.

But like I said, any attempts at rational conversation (like the short one we are having!) are completely shut down by the gun lobby. It's just not allowed and Congress is just the NRA's lapdog at this point. It's pathetic.

The world is just so overly complicated. Humans are animals and society has been set up in such a way that an unnecessary amount of stress blankets are everyday lives. Until we start living with less restrictions and such heavy consequences for simply not fitting the norm, these incidents will infinitely perpetuate, seen on news or not.

27?!?!

Holy shit, this is terrible. I mean, even if it was only one dead it would still be terrible, but this is just.... I don't even know how to describe it. Nightmarish.

I hope the families of the victims can find peace in these troubled hours.

Is this some random psycho act? Previous school shootings are mostly done by students at the very school they target. The shooters are often bitter and unstable, hating their peers. This must be different since they obviously arent student at a primary school.

2 handguns, single shooter.
Massive manhunt for the shooter when police arrived. Shot dead.

School requires you to be "buzzed in" to enter through the front door. Unknown how shooter got in.

Obama has been notified. FBI involved.

Briefing soon.
27 people dead, 18 of them children

Can we just agree that the NRA has way to much power in the national discussion? They want to enforce existing laws, but only once they're heavily watered down. And when tragedies like this happen, they claim that it isn't the right time to talk about guns.

And yet, their attempts to play kingmaker in the 2012 elections failed horribly.

If the NRA was such a paper tiger in the 2012 elections, then why are we giving them any attention? And as long as they have Ted Nugent on the board of directors, why do we give them any capital to spend?

Yeah, we should ignore them and get the conversation started, like, yesterday.

Wonder if bullying is the cause of this. ..

Maybe, but I get the feeling that a person going on a rampage because his/her son/daughter is bullied, would be targeting the bullies. This seems more like they are shooting just to kill anybody.

But how can that debate really be started when one side is so ideologically opposed to compromise that the conversation cant get past it?

Except that its relatively simple to convert a semi automatic rifle or handgun into a fully auto gun with little modifications to the firing pin. I've actually shot semi auto guns before that basically turned themselves into fully auto over time because the components started to wear down.

Im thinking of the parents. Damn, terrible. On a much much lower importance level, the xmas trees n presents will be a fucked up reminder their son or daughter is gone forever.

Take it to another thread.

Because the sacro-saint nature of slaughtering children negates discussion of how the single-most powerful pro-gun lobby in the US is reating?

I apologize, forgive my inappropriate comment. I don't mean to offend but this happens too often. I am upset. I am not trying to open a debate here about gun control, nor do I want to participate in one.

The comment is in this thread and I respect your opinion but you could have just glossed over it or pm'd a mod. Be well, keep an eye out for others.

my god, the thought some of those parents showing up and waiting for hours for a son/daughter that will never show up:(

Incredible sadness.

Fuck this shit, absolutely horrible. It disgusts me, an elementary school for Pete's sake!?

Something has to change in America.

Legalizing rape = owning a gun?

Cool I'm outta here

Reading comprehension.

I was just pointing out that the argument "you can't stop people from owning guns so trying to control guns is moot" is extremely faulty and makes little logical sense.

It's possible the gunman was a rabid anti-gun opponent who saw the pro-gun reaction to all the recent shootings and said to himself "Well if no one's against guns after this, I'll show them! I'll kill a bunch of children!"
