If I were one of the parents, how on Earth do you console your child who witnessed this today? I would just hug my child and cry...

Thankfully at that age, a lot of the kids won't fully understand if they didn't see the actual shooting..

As were the guns of the VaTech shooter, though his mental illness should have prevented it. But that doesn't address the question. If he couldn't have got the guns from the gun store, do we believe neither of these perpetrators would have bought acquired them through other means? I'm just not prepared to believe that men who have it in them to kill dozens of people would have simply thrown up their hands given up on their plan if their gun application is denied at the local gun shop. idk, though.

ending gun shows would be a good place to start.

This really makes me mad. Little kids and probably a mostly female staff have no fucking chance to defend themselves against a coward like this...

If they had all been able-bodied adult men it wouldn't have mattered anyway, that's what guns are for. I know there's a separate thread for it, but I just wanted to point out that nobody would have had a chance to defend themselves.

American males in their 20's nowadays are quite the breed. (Said as an American male in his 20's)

I think we should reign back from hysterics ("I'm throwing up", "the whole human race is sick") and get some perspective. It is one country's domestic incident. Do you get this choked up when children die in NATO airstrikes? The motives are less reprehensible but are their lives any less valuable?

I really fucking hate these type of equivalencies. As if there's a "pain and suffering meter" we're suppose to gauge horrible incidents by.

Oh go fuck yourself.

I'm spending a month in south Florida and you people are fucked up. It's goddam dodge city here, everyone has a weapon.

It's completely out of control.

I'm watching it on the news right now, I'm allowed to get pissed and lose my cool. Hence the edit.

Where are you hanging out at that you see everyone packing heat?

Absolutely horrible, my heart goes out to the families. 11 days before Christmas, at an elementary school... not that it's okay at any time, of course.

It's hard to process

Tears welling up again. Damn it.

Kids thinking about Secret Santa gifts to purchase for their parents and siblings. Getting ready for holiday school plays.

We are using made-up scenarios as arguments now? If the government invested as many billions in gun control (preventing illegal gun purchases) as they do in the war against drugs these two killings could have been prevented for sure.
Two can play the same game.

I've just sort of been sitting here quietly at work since I first heard the news an hour or so ago, and then the changing death toll.

My day is pretty much ruined. I cannot imagine how the other kids and parents are dealing with this. And I can't imagine how anyone could even think of targeting kids.

27 people...

The most sickening thing?
Gun nuts will flood their local gun shops and buy more guns because the black president is going to take them from us.

Just like every other fucking shooting...

I don't care. I hate when people take horrific tragedies and turn them into an attack on the country. Maybe gun policy had something to do with it, maybe not. Today who gives a shit. People are dead, and if you can't grasp the importance of that, then what good are you.

To take numbers I can steal from Wikipedia, there were over 12,000 gun-related homicides in the US in 2007. That's almost 33 a day. People are dead every day from guns, so one of these days we're going to have to have this conversation.

This thread definitely isn't the place for it, though.

This shooting is unbelievably fucked up, and I just can't fathom the motivation for it. Dwelling on it is sickening.

If the shooter was 20 he probably played all kinds of shit, like Call of Duty and Halo.

We're in for a treat for the next few months. Again.

Violence breeds violence, and there are probably many other reasons why this happened, but shit like this didn't happen regularly when I was a kid.

No it won't. Anyone who tries to bring up gun control will be annihilated by this retarded fucking system of ours.

Pretty much this. Politicians will pretend to care about gun control for a few weeks but nothing will come of it and before long it will be back to business as usual again.

Only 3 people taken to hospital apparently, which is incredibly disheartening. Considering the scale of it, I am expecting the death count to rise.

Gun laws will never stop people who want guns from getting them...

Yeah it will. If guns are harder to get, it will definitely stop people from getting them. No doubt about this, not one.

Will it stop everyone? No. Will it stop some of them? Definitely it will.

This is fucking disgusting, the US really need to introduce stronger gun control. Seriously what the hell, they're children and Christmas is so close, fuck these crazy gun nut shit heads.

Only a fucking monster would do something like this, they deserve to burn, fucking scum.

My thoughts go out to the families and everyone involved.

Yeah sounds like you have yourself under control now huh?

Anyone find it strange that none of the people in the pictures are bloody or anything, considering the magnitude of the shooting?

I don't even know how to react to this. Usually I am sad and upset over these things, but I...I don't even know what to say to this. I am in a state of emotional paralysis...beyond sad and upset.

What an awful, disgusting thing that happened today.

I have no idea how I would react if something like this were to ever happen to a kid of mine. I hope beyond anything I never have to find out.
