Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

Their reply to the podcast timestamp thing (it's brought up to them ever week or so btw) is that to be able to do that they would have to change the file format used and they prefered to stay with .mp3 because of the versatility and ease of use by anybody on any platform.

Well if that's their reasoning, it's pretty stupid. Simple text on the bombcast page or timestamps written to the comment id3 tag inside the mp3 would be more than enough.

2 minute effort tops.

Is the community even doing timestamps right now? Cause there's nothing stopping them from doing it already... If nobody is doing it then maybe it's because there's not a real demand for it...

My media player is a piece of shit with streaming things and timestamps

Not that I care re: ME3, but it'll be a pain if they spoilercast anything I actually give a crap about

People are asking for timestamps to skip spoiler discussion in this thread all the time, of course there's demand for it.

what's your media player

Google Listen for Android

it has this annoying habit of, if you try and skip ahead while a thing is still streaming, the timing that it shows you and where the cast actually is will go completely out of a whack. This is a major pain for 3-hour long casts.

Check out Doggcatcher.

Google listen is dead, you should really switch to something like beyond pod, doggcatcher or pocket casts.

Get Pocket Casts - it's extremely fast and easy to use (much more so than BeyondPod and Doggcatcher).

Google Listen has always been terrible and hasn't been updated for a very long time now.

New Encyclopedia Bombastica: Bruce Lee on the Beta site. Looks like it's going up on the live site tomorrow morning. I'm glad they're publishing fresh content on the beta site. New player seems much better and I'm not dealing with constant buffering at HD quality.

It remembers where you left off on a video. Started on my laptop watched for a few minutes, decided to started it up on my desktop so I could watch it on my tv and it start right where I left off. I remember they mentioned that but I didn't think about it until it just happened.

Do the player controls stay up for you when watching full screen in HD?

I'd love to stick with the player but the controls being up constantly is a bit of a nuisance.

Thanks for the advice, will I be able to add rss links through a PC interface? it's a humungeous pain through my phone.

With Pocket Casts, you will be able to either import from Google Reader ("Listen Subscriptions" folder) or add directly through the integrated podcasts search engine.

A little extra advice: There seems to be a bug in the Android Download Manager on some versions of Android, therefore disable that option in Settings -> Episode updates if you have trouble downloading podcasts with special characters - or disable it either way, as the app handles downloads much better by itself ;)

Listening to the Let's Talk About Memberships! podcast and man is this thing a bummer to listen to now. :/

Link for everyone that wants to bask in nostalgia as well: http://www.giantbomb.com/podcast/?podcast_id=180

That entire first year of memberships was a bummer.

HD was the 'thing' for me to subscribe initially, in addition to the bombcast nonsense. Then they kept the Bombcast normal and gave away HD for free, so the second year it was 'a new piece of subscriber only content every day' that got me, which turned out to be a lie. Now it's...something. (I changed from yearly to monthly)

They gave HD away for free because of so many complaints. They asked subscribers if they minded and the majority said no.

I don't remember them ever saying daily content. The second year was a lot better though. Random PC Game, LOLS, Jar Time, ect. They just need to make it more standardized. Like EVERY friday, as regular as TNT.

They advertised daily subscriber content for a very long time, I remember that claim still being on the site shortly before the buy-out (it was brought up when everyone was wondering why there hadn't been new content for weeks).

They absolutely did. It amazes me every time I bring this up someone says something to the regard of "I don't think they promised that". They did. On the subscriber site it said something like "Whether it's a blah blah video or blah blah something, there will be a new piece of subscriber only content every day." They said this, it turned about to be a complete lie, and no one cared.

edit: For the record, it was a new piece of content throughout all of the Whiskey sites, every day. Still turned out to be a lie. Bummer.

My mistake. I thought it was weekly content. Honestly, I can't see how good the content would be if it was daily. I'd rather a 3 hour Vinny, Drew and Dave PC game than a small throwaway piece of content.

I agree on the GB end. But I don't think it'd be that difficult to get 5 pieces of subscriber only content with four three websites. I don't think it would be hard to coordinate that.

the fourth was CV

It would be nice if they could get sub content out once a week. Every time they let it slide they should add an extra week to my sub. I'm not saying they're not busy, but they couldn't squeeze out even an hour to go over the beta site or something? Ugh.

They need to figure out a way to make subscription more of a PS+ thing where you get access to time-sensitive/limited content only when you're still a subscriber. Currently it doesn't make any sense from a consumer perspective to subscribe for more than something like for one month every year (ideally right when they give subscription discounts). Just pick it up for a month and download all of the subscriber videos that you haven't seen. If you're subscribing for longer than that, you're practically giving them a donation.

Or you are subscribing for longer than that because you actually like to watch new content as it comes out all year round.

Digital Restriction Management is not a viable option for a community-driven website such as GiantBomb: There's no way to do video content that way without severely restricting popular use cases (file handling, browsers, operating systems) - I personally won't accept Amazon Video (file DRM) or Netflix (streaming only) style restrictions.

I never watch any of their content live. I don't want to miss a second of content because I have to walk away or the stream goes down for a moment. Offering HD content alone was enough for me.

I'm not saying they should add DRM. The content shouldn't be time-sensitive simply by adding on DRM. The content itself should be time-sensitive e.g. something you would want to watch immediately as soon as it is released such as live-commentary on the VGAs/E3.

So, the endurance run is one giant quicklook? Basically all of persona 4 will get spoiled? I probably wont even play it... but what to expect when watching it?

Important life lessons, love, friendship, and betrayal.

Jeff and vinny being funny as fuck playing through all of Persona 4.

Pretty much.

There's a lot of downtime, so they kind of talk about whatever a lot. It's definitely a fun thing to go through.

They play through the entire story, start to finish. They don't do all of Persona 4's sidequests as they just do stuff that appealed to them or seemed fun, but the ending they get is
the true canonical ending
so if you never intend to play it then watching the ER is a good way to get into Persona.

There's a lot of games I think become a lot more palletable at $30 or below. Heck, I think I got everything except Far Cry 3, Virtue's Last Reward and Kid Icarus at around $35 or less this year.

Trade-ins help a lot more than cheap buys in many cases.

That said, I don't really feel bad about spending more than 30 dollars on a game I don't like it. Sometimes I do it on purpose.

I try to stay current with games but it get tougher every year as I get more responsibilities both at work at and home. I planned to get Syndicate but figure that is a game that shows its strength in co-op.
The games I bought full price this year were;
Persona 4 Golden
Dragon's Dogma
Virtues Last Reward
Playstation All-Stars
X-Com
Far Cry 3
Tokyo Jungle (maybe PS+ discount)
Torchlight 2 (Steam discount maybe?)
Ragnarock Odyssey (my only full-price regret purchase)

Been playing off & on Azura Wrath, Binary Domain, ZOE HD and NFS most wanted. All of them I got for 30 bucks or less.

I don't think I've bought a single game at full price.

<3 Green Man Gaming.

edit: oh wait, there's tekken tag tournament 2.

My only console purchase this year.
