This has gone well beyond self parody now, its a joke and its like half the country is too blind to see the problems right in front of them, this has come around due to a lack of social health care meaning that many people with mental health issues go untreated. this coupled with the availability of highly lethal weapons leads to the increase in events like this

and the world is watching america in the hope that they will finally do something about it, and the NRA make a statement that makes most around the world bury their head in their hands.

What I find disturbing is that you can create a way around gun restriction like fingerprints and getting your chief law enforcement officer to approve a gun transfer.

All some crazy guy needs to do is create a NFA gun trust. The trust will own the gun and he crazy person will be the "trustee" who will complete access to the gun like the owner. The trust doesn't require a signature or fingerprints. Our laws are a complete joke.

Mental health care is an issue, but it doesn't deserve equal attention in this case. In reality, mass shootings like this make up a very small percentage of people killed by guns each year here in the States. There's more to be concerned about than just stopping mass killings. Gun control can reduce gun crime in general, which is a huge, huge problem.

If you are talking about ending crime in general then you are talking about ending gang crime. That would be the result of the War on Drugs.

I dont think lack of mental health care is really so much worse here than in other developed countries, either. Its something to always work on improving, but its not like we dont have lots of psych wards and counselors to go to if needed. They're there. This aint a 3rd world country that doesn't have the infrastructure in place.

There's plenty of disturbed people in other places. The difference? They dont have 88.1 guns per 100 people.

In itself guards aren't a bad thing, but it's too costly to be realistic, it doesn't treat the real problem, it's only a mitigation measure, only for schools, is not needed in other 1st world countries, it's just adding more guns in to the mix, etc.

I didn't and I'm fairly certain that none of the schools in the district where I live and grew up do either still. 3 high schools, 5 middle, 8 elementary.

Untrained staff at Sandy Hook somehow managed to take exactly the same "emergency evacuation and security" measures the trained Colombine guard apparently took. So if that's all the guard is good for and untrained staff already managed that on their own, the roll-call taker is looking like the better ROI. Maybe send them to a few days of emergency evacuation training. Still cheaper and just as effective.

I had an armed police officer in my high school and that was back in 01-04. It was not even a dangerous city or school, they just did it because they could.

As a Canadian watching the NRA press conference I could only shake my head in disbelief.

Blaming Bulletstorm, GTA, Hollywood, basically anyone and everything except the obvious cause ... Lack of responsible societal gun control laws.

The armed guards for our schools comment just goes to show how in denial these people really are.

The rest of the Western world thinks the whole gun control debate in the US is insane. Its obvious what needs to be done (stronger gun control laws) along with better public education.
