Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

He's so wrong about Alan Wake's combat being janky. SO WRONG.

I'm a big fan of Alan Wake's combat. I felt like I was the only one though. It was tactical in the way you fought to keep everyone in front of you so you can dodge every incoming attack but most people either disliked it or grew tired of it.

But The Walking Dead was better.

I agree, but they were cut too fast, not even talked about. Surprising from Vinny too.

Alan Wake's combat is fantastic, AWAN has improved it too, but it needs a bit more. Not sure what though :)

Oh right, sorry, haven't listened to the podcast yet. Yeah, if they were just thrown off the bus immediately that's a shame, but that does kinda seem like an obvious choice for the category.

Sleeping Dogs definitely deserves some props for both the quality of the game and the fact that really it should have turned out to be a complete turd, given the circumstances, but if we're talking about circumstances, well, TWD came from the guys who had recently gone from coasting along to making actually bad games.

Totally. For me it's all about the dodge. Also, having to burn away the darkness is just a great addition to the TPS formula.

I'm sure they could refine it. If they even make another one. :(

Yeah I mean holy shit, Dishonored being cut like it was, was very surprising to me. EDGE gave it their GotY and Best Debut and I agree with them on it, even if Dishonored wasn't my favorite game of 2012. It also sold surprisingly well and the game has very solid mechanics and a great atmosphere. A shame mos of the GiantBomb guys were not as charmed by it, although I think other podcasts like Idle Thumbs are more likely to put it in their GotY(.cx) lists.

Also from me, I missed these:

BEST USE OF LICENSED SONG WANNABE NOMINEE: JENNY DANCE SCENE (The Darkness II)

BEST USE OF LICENSED SONG WANNABE NOMINEE: 9 CIRCULOS (Max Payne 3, although technically created for the game I think)

And the other two are? :P Sleeping Dogs is this year's Darksiders- awesome shit from other games spliced together into something awesome. Dishonoured is from the Deus Ex school of design.

It's Best Debut, not Most Originality.

More so than adventure game with puzzles taken out and the dialogue system from Alpha Protocol. Sleeping Dogs did new things with the Warriors/Bully combat system and did a rare thing of making an open world game in a foreign country. Dishonored did the new thing of making a stealth game much more accessible(which Mark of the Ninja did the same thing but seemed to get more praised for it despite only working in a 2d zone)

God damn XCOM looks amazing. One of the few games this year I've barely seen let alone played. That video definitely put it at the very top of my list of games to play next. OT: serviceable on consoles?

The sleeping dogs melee combat system is a completely stripped down Batman: AA clone with some context sensitive stuff.

oh god I was away all week and just now im watching the videos

fuckin outsanding work, wasnt expecting the Office thing at all

A game that invokes an emotional response on a scale like The Walking Dead did was pretty "new". Rare enough for a pat on the back, anyway. More importantly, it's the kind of thing we need to be seeing more of.

Oh, and that's the Arkham Asylum combat system, with the feeling of playing like a superhero removed.

So I just watched yesterday and today's group quick looks that take place at the end of the daily recaps (ME3 Leviathan v. XCOM)

Night and day difference between the two in terms of the group being enthusiastic, joking around, etc.

I wouldn't mind if they just replaced TNT with something like those as well.

But the category is best debut. They made it pretty clear in the podcast one of the driving criteria they were looking for was something that makes them say "I want to see more of this," something that knocked their socks off, perhaps the promising start to a franchise. Doing new things may come into play, but that's not really the crux of the category as described.

Damn I'm now regretting not pulling the trigger on the gamefly X com game. I was going to wait because there was going to be more DLC and my backlog is huge. That game had a great showing!

Now I'm debating getting it at amazon. Hm....

No it's not. It's the Bully and Warriors combat system. It was even directed by the same guy. The running tackle is straight out of Bully.

I haven't played Bully. Why did you remind me of that. CHRISTMAS RUINED. :(

I'm not the only one who thought it was Arkham-esque, anyway, it's far from an invalid comparison.

Fuck, even Ryan cried during TWD? I'm an inhuman monster.

You're not the only one (far from it), but it's a lazy and shallow comparison. Pretty much the only similarity is the way counters work. Not to mention, as each game progresses, they develop completely differently.

Sending this to Elzar as we speak

you dun goof'd
I'm gonna go fill out that Capcom form!

I beat the Walking Dead a few hours ago and I just don't see what's so special about it to make it one of the best games of the year. There is virtually no actual gameplay, the choices you make end up not mattering in any real way, and the story/dialog is mediocre at best, I'd say it's worse than the TV show and the show is pretty bad

How do you sleep at night?

Haha, where the heck is Sessler's photo in his list from?
Totally forgot Unfinished Swan came out this year. Glad to see someone liked it enough for it to top a list. I was planning on playing it at some point. Dishonored not being mentioned by GB until now, and it's Sessler's number 1. I haven't had any interest in it, but surprised it took this long for it to make a list.

Uh I think Darksiders 2 is this year's Darksiders, Green Scar :p

I'm surprised they were surprised with Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3 looked at it's very worst like a competent, big budget, sequel. ZombiU looked like it was launch title shovelware.

I didn't cry during To the Moon either.

Dishonored is a very good game, but seems to lack that indescribable something that pushes very good games into the territory of special. It may be the closest a game has ever come to that threshold without crossing it for me, since I have nothing but praise for it.

Speaking of Darksiders II, that one is similar in that there's very little I have to complain about that game, but absolutely nothing about it excited me.
