Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Let's wait for Vinny first but for now I agree. I didn't play Forza this year but I did play NFS:MW. Both games seem to go for the same kind of feel, but from what I've heard Forza is the better package.

Forza is VASTLY superior. Like you should really go out and buy it now if you like driving games superior.

Unless Vinny mentiones Fallen Enchantress, Drox Operative or Crusader Kings 2 (not a chance in hell) I think Jeff's list will be king. Vinny will definitely have Walking Dead in there which ruins it for me.

I dread Patrick's list. It's going to reek of hipster gamer snottiness.

I think the #1 spot is pretty open. From the discussion yesterday it seems they are aware of the problems with Walking Dead, and Jeff doesn't seem to have been compelled to finish it. They all seem to be fans of Far Cry 3 and X-Com though despite their problems, which some should consider smaller.
Those are most likely the top 3, and right now I think X-Com could come out on top but wouldn't be surprised by the other 2.

Eh, I don't think there's any way Walking Dead wins. They always end up dragging the GotY candidates through the mud in the process of removing them from contention and Walking Dead simply has too many issues, both technical and gameplay wise. FC3, maybe, but I seriously doubt it.

What does that even mean? What kind of games would he have to have on his list for it to "reek of hipster gamer snottiness?"

JOHAN SEBASTIAN JOUST + 10.000.000 MU'FUKKAH !1!

SPACE TEAM ON #1 BARISTA BOYO!!!
/hunk

In all seriousness, Patrick (and maybe Vinny) is the only one with a chance of having Dishonored on his list. If that is so I don't care whatever else is on it.

Yeah I don't know either. Are we talking about actual hipster things like games that are so underground that no one knows about them? Are we talking about offbeat games like Hotline Miami which are on a lot of lists?

Jeff being jokingly mad about the result on the Bombcast would imply Walking Dead won, but he could have been jokingly jokingly mad.

here. someone might want this

I'll claim this if no one else has.

I'm really liking the variety in their top 10 lists this year. Feels much more varied than last year's. I was shocked that Jeff was going to have 3 minutes for his #1 pick, but I was really pleased to see P4 getting even more love. I can't wait to get a Vita and pick up Golden. I was feeling the same way about "I just can't play through that massive game again," but, after watching my brother play it some over this break, I've got the itch really badly again.

Also, that clip of Patrick with the shoulder cam made me nervous he was going to drop it, haha.

It's gonna be one of the best lists. Trust me.

This is not biased at all :P

I'm really doubting Vinny since he apperently stopped playing it and wasn't feeling it during that time.

Maybe he finally got around to playing the rest of it?

Oh Brad, you have never been so wrong as you were to assume QWOP is "child's play" compared to CLOP because it's only two legs.

Also, I don't want to get into, or start, any internet arguments, but there's a growing segment of the gaming community that really rubs me the wrong way with the way they lord their opinions over others, and while I'm not accusing Patrick of being like that, I predict his list will remind me of them.

I feel like P3P did the portable release better than any other game I can think of. Maybe it was the four years between playing P3FES and P3P, but playing the female protagonist felt like a completely different game. While P4G doesn't appear to have anything that drastic, I am starting to regret not getting a Vita when the Assassin's Creed bundle was on sale.

You mean hipsters?

Man, I really want to see a bunch of behind the scenes stuff this year.
Yeah, if their earlier twitter photos and the clips for the top 10 lists are any indication, there should be a lot of fun stuff in there.

edit:

Yeah, compared to the apparent additions to P3, P4's changes look almost anemic in comparison. However, I still haven't played P3 (I've owned it for a year now on ps2... but I will! I'm just a sucker for P4. My brother bought me the artbook this christmas, so I'm really in the mood for an excuse to revisit the game.
Kind of feeling the same way about the bundle, but I'm hoping we'll get a $150 or lower price at some point this coming year.

You seemed to have left out the part where you didn't want to get into it.

The idea that Patrick liking indie games makes him a hipster is fucking retarded.

It's clearly the hair that makes him one.

I know you were joking, but I don't want to be misunderstood, so:

-I'm not calling Patrick out or accusing him of anything.
-I mean hipster in the gaming sense.
-I'm clearly alone on this one anyway, so just dismiss me as wrong.

I think a hipster with all that curly hair would go to a hairdresser and get those curls made, not like Patrick, he can't help it.

Watch out Patrick, i know how to strip you of your rank :

Worth noting for both you and the person you were replying to, P4G is kind of disappointing that there isn't a female protagonist, but to make up for it they tweaked EVERY mechanic:

  • All the skills the characters learn have changed, making useless party members godly (you aren't dependent on keeping the one previous healer in the party)
  • Social links give added skills to each party member, and there are extra things you can do with them to boost affection points and learn new skills, or even re-learn skills you discarded
  • You can see a list of books you have on hand, and how much longer it'll take to read them
  • You don't have just one day to buy a book that's on sale
  • You can watch the shopping channel at any time between Sunday and Tuesday
  • You can read a book to double the amount of skill points you earn from the Chinese restaurant
  • There is a huge amount of fantastic costumes you can wear, including some pretty great fan-service ones. I had a different costume for every dungeon and it was awesome.
  • The new events don't drastically change the story, but are REALLY funny
  • There is one subtle "tweak" to the late-game story that's unexpected but pretty cool.
  • The new "voice" feature shows what other people did during the day, which doubles as a quick list of all the people you can hang out with. No more running around town to try and see who's available.
  • Maxing out a a social link with character who is in charge of support skills leads to a million bonuses during every battle
  • Maxing out a social link with one new character leads to a new epilogue, maxing it out with another new character and doing some stuff unlocks a really fascinating optional ending.
  • There's an incredible period of time when (pretty big spoilers)
    Teddie lives with you
  • There's extra jobs that can help boost your stats
  • You can hang out with people at night, or use a fortune box to raise affection points, guaranteeing that the next time you visit them during the day they'll rank up
  • It's essentially a crystal clear HD-ish remake of the game
  • Bear-ly any load times. One or two seconds at most.
  • You get a ton of extra days to boost your social links, which you can spend with anyone
  • Fishing has been expanded
  • You get a garden, and can either plant crops which serve as items, or dig up bugs to use as bait for the fishing.
  • YOU CAN FINALLY FUGGING pick which skills you want your demons to inherit
  • There IS a consequence to dating everyone
  • You can earn "skill cards" that let you give a demon a specific skill.
  • There's a new tv features that lets you watch every cutscene, participate in a quiz show, or even watch the recent Persona Live concert.
  • There's a fast-forward option to speed through parts you've already seen.
  • The new boss has the best music in the game
  • In general all the new music is fantastic.
  • The new intro is the happiest FMV I've ever seen.

It's truly the gameplay culmination of P3 > P3FES > P4 > P3P > to this.

I was on the fence with getting it as well as a Vita, since I played through P4 a million times and watched the anime, but I somehow managed to put 40 captivated hours over the course of six days.

It was my second full time job because I loved it so. Even though I knew what was coming, there were parts that still brought manly tears to my eyes.

It's funny, both Dark Souls PC and this might be my favorite games of the year, and they're both ports.
