Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

The Witcher 2 came a good way, all within a single game, which I'm sure is easier, they were willing to let the player miss out on big chunks of beautifully rendered content based on player decisions. The overarching plot stays on a pretty set course, which makes sense because Geralt is only a small piece to the bigger puzzle but the world can be left in some seriously different states.

I think the coolest part is
that you get the opportunity to killing the dragon not knowing its secret, which if you do know it changes the decision completely.

Walking Dead couldn't commit to its choices because Telltale would have needed to make a half dozen (or more) episode 5s. It's a lot of expense for very little gain.
Telltale could have easily created consequences with their existing budget. There wouldn't be a need for a half-dozen episode 5s; why not just record dialogue and re-use assets that reflect different outcomes instead of straining to make sure nothing deviates from the story path? I mean, would it really have cost any extra resources to
have the occasional character leave instead of die, or stay in the group with a bit of dialogue rather than leave, or make the crazy car guy at the end give up instead of contrive lame reasons to carry out his plan, or have Kenny do anything other than his bizarre sacrifice for Ben in Episode 5
? It's not as if Telltale has to craft entirely new environments to have some consequences. It's a matter of design and writing skill, not budget.

Telltale also could have gotten a lot of mileage from a small number of important consequences (maybe even only one or two per episode). This would have gone a long way towards creating an illusion of choice, if not much actual choice. For any given situation, the prospect that it MIGHT lead to consequences would add teeth to it. As it was, by Episode 4, I barely cared about my choices, knowing that none of them would lead to anything.

Walking Dead would have worked better as choose your own adventure books because the writer doesn't have to produce assets and wrangle voice actors. It would be a lot more possible to have dramatic changes, and carry those changes into the next book. There aren't any well written choose your own adventure books for the same reason that writing in videogames generally sucks. There's a stigma attached to the genre that's going to keep away the better authors and readers.

I think that's why (ep3)
they took the choices from previous episodes and merged the story. And aside from a brief section in episode 5, never branched out again.

Having played most of 999, I still prefer Walking Dead's presentation. It's a sacrifice, but it's worth it despite the disappointing agency.

Walking Dead is an experience tainted by knowing what happened to other people and realising you didn't have as much control over events as you thought you did.

It's the one game I wish I didn't know anything about, other than my own experience, because with each reveal a choice didn't matter much it taints my original experience a little bit in retrospect.

Not enough to stop listening to the podcasts, though.

Yes! The game was way cooler and more impressive when i played through all the episodes in about a week before reading anything about it. Then i finished it and went on GAF, and now i wished i hadn't read all that stuff.

Though my original experience still stands, and it was awesome.

I think that's the impressive part, that it manages to make it seem like your own experience no one else had. It handles that stuff really well.

I'm playing TWD right now and what's hurting my experience the most is the reactions I've read about the game while they still released the episodes. It's kinda like I'm just playing the game to find out what exactly everyone was talking about once Episode 3 came out. I still enjoy the game, but it's definitely become more difficult to immerse myself into it when I already expect the bad stuff to happen. And it doesn't help that some people were maybe a bit overly dramatic when they described their experience with the game.

Has anyone posted timestamps for ME3 spoilers for the GOTY podcasts? If there's anything relevant in the ones that have gone up already.

Edit: nevermind, doesn't look like anything relevant is up yet!

Naw man, according to Jeff what you're experiencing is more enjoyment due to knowing what's going on ahead of time.

YES.

I said before there is no reason for just Jeff to do the Bombastica videos. Would love to see them all talk about random old games they have connections with.

Also good to have Alex doing video I guess but a shocking amount of GB content is now being shot in peoples bedrooms / living rooms. They are funded by CBS for god sake and not some random person on Machinima / twitch.

I fast-forwarded through half of it. More often than not, I don't get around to playing games until years after they release, which makes Giant Bomb's stance on spoilers insanely frustrating.

Talking around spoilers is infuriating and kneecaps good discussion on the podcast 51 weeks of the year.

God forbid spoilers are allowed one week out of the year.

OMG SPOILERZ is the worst.

I'm going to start 1 of 2 big gaming related tasks I want to get through in the near future.

Restart Fallout New Vegas and play through it with some light modding and the DLC. My original playthrough was interrupted by some very annoying performance issues. I shelved it and hadn't taken the time to go back but during the recent sales I got all of the DLC and it is very high on my back log list.

OR...

Start a complete replay of the Mass Effect franchise and attempt to experience ME 3 the way Brad did. I have some idea of some of what Leviathan adds and some of what the extended ending adds but I haven't really read up on either. I had a very positive opinion of ME3 coming to the end.
There were some obviously rushed goofy bits, like the half baked nonsensical eavesdropping side missions and the awful escape the reapers minigame. I also didn't like the unnecessary urgency that the initial attack on Earth added, even if there was some dialog to make it seem less urgent, every non-mission critical moment felt like Shepard was choosing to sacrifice thousands of lives for petty bullshit. That all being said, I was happy with most of character moments and I felt most of the side stories were being wrapped up nicely, if maybe a little too neatly and quickly.
Until the end ME 3, warts and all, was a good game fitting the franchise. Then the end ruined the finale almost completely for me. I've mentioned it before, Brad has convinced me to give it another shot with the additional content.

I think either one of these games is going to take up the majority of my gaming time for a while so I want to get start while I'm still on my time off from work. I'm sure the majority of people here would suggest Fallout New Vegas but I feel like that is something I am definitely going to do at some point, no matter what. I could see the inspiration to play Mass Effect again fading away if I don't just jump in.

Awesome. I've been hoping EB would be a feature that started to include other members of the crew.

YES.

Agreed. I think the reason it's been all Jeff so far is that Jeff is the one with both the collection and the capture ability to do it.

So now that GOTY is done it's time to get ready for E3!

Some music to set the mood.

If this year's GOTY awards thought me anything it's that Jeff has terrible taste in games. Well at least it doesn't align with mine at all. Fighting so much for Syndicate? Come on!

I thought that was more like a statement because he basically seem to be the only one in the industry liking it that much ;)

He has heard the numerous complaints and finally cut the hair. Oh well... Gotee is a nice replacement!

The Zillion in-game character looks like Captain Planet, almost.
Jeff's totally right, the sound effects in this game are fun. Really liking the main song playing in the background too.

That dota 2 thread by a gaffer recently and greg placing it no 1 on his list means I just have to go back and try the game. I didn't play it last time because of the daunting complexity and difficulty (supposedly), hopefully it won't take too long to get to grips with.
