Amazon de just shipped my bfs vita :) should be here anywhere between tomorrow and next Thursday !

Mine came in 3 working days from Amazon.de, but your parcel of Vita joy has New years to negotiate fingers crossed it comes Saturday or it will be probably be Wednesday next week sadly.

Did your bf take the news well on Xmas that his present was delayed due to crappy pre-owned testing of the store you purchased the original from? :)

P4G Buy Buy Buy!

For some reason I get the impression that the game was treated with much less respect than it would have if it was released on another platform tbh. I mean, it's an almost perfect game, I can really find very few flaws with it. Sigh.
Could you list the few flaws you found?

bold words.
Yeah, well it's true that it was well received by critics and all but for me it's like an instant classic :P
I also read a lot of complains about the control system, but I think it's one of the best thing of the game. I love flying around for the city idly, maybe just collecting stuff, and I love the fact that you can pull some amazing stunts that you would have considered impossible at the beginning of the game. Really love when games have that sense of progressing skill and hard-ish learning curve, they're usually the most rewarding in the long distance.
As I wrote in the other thread my only complain is about the story, it felt like the game was rushed to be a launch title, especially since Siren is my favourite game ever and I was expecting some kind of incredible mindfuck by Toyama (still hoping for something like that in a sequel though, since this felt like Gravity Rush Episode 1).

Could you list the few flaws you found?
See above :) I actually didn't take the time to go deeper because I already wrote something about the plot on the OT but yeah, that's basically it.

The structure of the world in Knytt makes much more sense when you get to chapter 3. Chapters 1 and 2 are pretty much unnecessary once you acknowledge that the story is completely meaningless, the game would have been better without them.

He was fine when I gave him something else ;)

Thats why its probably ranked low in my priority list. :p I have little time and a 100 hour game without any rewards like trophies is offputting. :s

your loss...

never understood how playing 7-8 different 12 hr games is sorta automatically preferable to playing a 100 hr game if you're actually enjoying the 100 hr game. fear of not playing enough different games? not having time for enough different games? isn't playing games simply about having a good time, irregardless of a particular game's length?...

& afa trophies go, i think i've just had too much fun with too many pre-trophy games to ever take them seriously (never mind considering them 'rewards' :) )...

I've been meaning to ask someone and this thread is friendly enough to do it... Why do trophies matter?

They add to the replay value of a game. I came to the conclusion that I play games more just because there are certain goals to finish. An example: unlock trophy for playing with a certain item/weapon, it helps me explore different playstyles I otherwise would've overlooked.

The trophy sound effect is also addicting, for someone with close to 4000 trophies they have become a part of playing a game.

^_^

I agree. They're good guidelines if you want to explore the game as much as possible. Without them there's an higher risk of missing stuff. And a challenge is always welcome.

I'm not a trophieaholic though, I usually go for the platinum only in games I totally love and if it's not too stressful or meaningless. I usually have a quick glance at achievements and decide if there's something I'd like to try, but I don't see them as a obligatory chore.

My Vita has been serviced and should arrive at my house in Friday! Too bad I am out of town until about a week after that. :(. Still, will be great to get back to P4G.

I've been meaning to ask someone and this thread is friendly enough to do it... Why do trophies matter? In general I just assume any time someone mentions trophies or achievements and not playing a game because they lack them they are joking, but I know deep down this isn't the case. I just can't comprehend why an add on feature that is only good to boost a ranking that is for bragging rights would effect what game you would play. I mean surely you wouldn't play a clearly inferior game just because it has trophies compared to a game that is clearly superior that doesn't right? Or do video game achievements really matter that much to some people?

Honestly trophies/achievements are one of the most awesome innovations to gaming, IMO. A lot of people hate on them, saying they'd rather do without them, but to me (and a lot of others) it adds to the replay value of the game. Before you could collect/unlock everything in game, but having a trophy/achievement set to add another level of completion is an entirely new ballgame.

The problem is some games have insanely hard/unfair trophies/achievements, to where it's almost not even fun to get 100%. Coming from this, sometimes I might not even get a game because of a few unfair trophies, I do like being able to complete it %100. For example, my Fallout 3 platinum took me about 130-150 hours, although I absolutely loved that game and had multiple playthroughs/explored a ton. My New Little King's Story platinum took me about 40-50 hours.

My biggest gripe with a game's trophy list is if it has a lot of online trophies, or very time consuming online trophies. To me that says the developers expect their players to have a large amount of free time to be able to play all these online sessions.. a lot of us don't have that kind of time anymore - like the 10,000 kills in ranked online matches in Resistance 2. Games that get online trophies right IMO are the ones that are like "Play this type of mode once" or "Win a match in this type of mode once", because it encourages you to try online but not kill yourself over it.

I dunno how to describe it, I'm addicted to collecting trophies.. I'm currently at like 1928 trophies in total and 13 platinum trophies.. it's just a lot of fun for me.

For awhile Sony was testing a rewards program (tied into trophies and stuff), they actually did send out some stuff but they quietly discontinued it until further notice.

lol, that's a new one

No it really is. It's my notification ring tone on my phone. Every time I hear that DING it's like a small piece of happiness.

Got up to chapter 12 in Gravity Rush and man... it does get repetitive and kinda boring. :/

Get it, and then buy the PS3 version and cross-play with yourself.

I mean, sweet Jesus, it's under $10 right now: No excuse not to buy it, you know?

I mean I could understand a trophy obsession if sony gave a reward for getting stuff (1 penny for a bronze, 2 cents for a silver, 5 cents for a gold, 10 cents for a plat to your psn account for example) but when it's for bragging rights I just don't get it :/ I can't remotely follow the mindset of someone grinding out a plat trophy for 100 plus hours after they finish the game if they don't enjoy the grind.

Because some of us find it... *gasp* fun.

Issue is developers putting stupid shit in that didn't need to be there in the first place. Climbing 8842 meters in a game that'll be finished way before then (and using personas that won't let you climb), I'm looking at you.

I've been meaning to ask someone and this thread is friendly enough to do it... Why do trophies matter?

I've mostly gotten over it but achievements were a big part of my 360 playing experience this gen. I played some boring, long, and stupid sessions this generation just grinding for achievements on the 360 for games I didn't even care about or long since got tired of playing. On the upside I've met some cool people that I still play with through my achievement hunting.

It's just the new arcade high score, that's all it is really. Just a fun thing to try to earn in building your online profile/gamertag. Some people played back in the day to get their 3 initials onto the leaderboard that week, while some people just played without caring about that. Nothing wrong with either. Instead of submitting a camera shot/screenshot of the final screen of the game or the leaderboard with your high score or something similar in previous gens, you now have the trophy/achievement attached to your profile showing that you completed that goal, which is nice.

The problem is some games have insanely hard/unfair trophies/achievements, to where it's almost not even fun to get 100%. Coming from this, sometimes I might not even get a game because of a few unfair trophies

THESE

Absolutely no creativity on the part of those developers in crafting their achievements. If you're going to get lazy or run out of dev time as with the Avatar TLAB game then at least make them easy or realistically obtainable for all achievement/trophy hunters' sanity (yeah yeah, I know, easy defeats the purpose, ha ha). What sucks is that it's become the norm now with less fun and creative goals and more "do 300 headshots" type stuff. People give Epic and the Gears franchise some props for funny achievement names and some fun goals but they too get lazy and stick grindfest cheevos in their games.

I usually go for the platinum only in games I totally love and if it's not too stressful or meaningless. I usually have a quick glance at achievements and decide if there's something I'd like to try, but I don't see them as a obligatory chore.

Lately I've felt the same. I'm really happy about getting all the achievements in games like Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, M:UA, SR3, and ME2 on the 360 and will be trying for the Plat in P4G.

im not into trophys much....

ill take a glance a tthem before istart the game, i'll try to achieve them during that play through without replaying areas more than i have to... then whatever ones i got by the end of the game is usually how it stays...hence my zero plats.

So I took a bite and got Hot Shots as well. I usually try to avoid digital copies but.. for like 8$ that's really, really hard to resist. My main problem now is I'm stuck with my tiny 8gb card, I need to get a 32gb card ASAP.

Between that, Dungeon Hunter and Little Deviants I have a lot more to play - so excited! I haven't even started Persona yet because I'm scared it will consume my soul and I won't want to play anything else. I'm going to be ordering DJ MAX soon too, from their site directly. I'm starting to finish up all the races in Motorstorm though, after I get at least 1 medal in each I'm going to start working on getting 3 in all of them.. I have 3 in a lot of 'em so.

I think it goes back to the days of leader boards and high scores in arcades.

I personally like challenging myself to get certain trophies in games. I wouldn't buy a game because it has easy trophies or anything like that but I may be more likely to buy a game if it has trophies. I'm talking about HD remakes and similar games here that didn't have trophies when they were out last gen.

That 12 days of Christmas showed zero Vita love it was all PS3 games. We'll be getting our Vita discounts in the EU on the next PSN update in January as SCEE failed to deliver them in time for the holidays so we've been informed by the blog admins.

Sorry, but this pisses me off. Let me offer some perspective here (this is not intended to be personal):

How many sales has EU had since July? How many random sales on all things Vita compatible? There were quite a few. Sales on Vita games. Sales on PSOne games (not to include the fact you have double the amount of PSOne games that will actual work and a team of people who seem to care about fulfilling the wishes of their users by bringing over the missing games [SotN, Spyro, etc.]. Major discounts on most PSP titles (Tekken 6 + Soul Calibur PSP will cost you a mere 12 GBP while they would cost someone with a US account $79.98). 12 days of Christmas where, while there were no Vita specific sales, gave you crazy discounts on PS+ memberships that can be used with your Vita.

Meanwhile, the best NA got was "oh, hey, we'll discount HSG and VT4 a little bit because the Olympics are occurring." Seriously, until this sale, there was just about nothing done to support Vita software sales in the US since I bought a Vita back in July. And according to your post, you'll get additional sales on things in January, where while you couldn't buy things at Christmas time, you can use any money gifted to you for the holiday on those sales. You know what SCEA is likely to give the NA stores after the last update to the holiday sales on Monday? Jack shit. We won't get increased PSOne support or sales on the software. We won't get any PSP catalog price adjustments. We won't get any additional Vita sales for God knows how long.

If you're in NA, it's, like, $9 this week if you have PS+. Just go for it!

Think we'll ever get Kat over here?

I've been meaning to ask someone and this thread is friendly enough to do it... Why do trophies matter?

I work in this particular field and I can tell you why - people, in general, love to visually see a representation of their progress. In general. Some people don't 'get it' - but far beyond just basic points (i.e. your level) badges (platinums, etc) and leaderboards (compare trophies) there's a lot of this same thing going on...on multiple levels. And the reason why they matter is because people want them. They spend more time playing games involving them. They do more with them, and it's a solid way to keep people coming back to the same product and building a base of players.

Now, it's not easy to do it RIGHT. It's easy to slap some PBL on things and just let go, but you can't expect people to enjoy it if you go that route. Also, a balance needs to be had and you really need to incorporate ways for the player to develop mastery but still get these positive reinforcements in trophies.

There's a lot more to it, a LOT more but the basic answer to "why do trophies matter?" is because people like to see representations of their progress.

Ask for a replacement, that should not be happening.

Thank you. It wasn't so hard guys.

I see those darker lines with the...violet, dark blue themes as well. It's funny because when in welcome park it goes to black it has more blotches and lines, but these two are the only ones that STAY even under other conditions. I'm asking amazon.de for a replacement. Cheers!

It's the same as my 'gaf username. I won't be playing it until I get a bigger card.. I might be getting one today, though I'm not sure. I have way too many games and I just need more space, desperately. With a lot of digital only games coming like Let's Try Bass Fishing! and EDF I need more space!

This is also a DD only in the west?

publishers should know that DD only is a suicide in Europe, heck even many PC games don't go DD only there, many of the pal region countries are just still behind.

One question... if you have two memory cards for a single account, if you swap them, do you loose the bubbles location and custom wallpapers or does the Vita remember were are each bubble located?

It's the exact opposite. Games can now be released here digitally where they wouldn't have been released here at all due to cost. DD is giving more games a chance in more territories. EDF is a perfect example, Gravity Rush was originally going to be DD only because of cost too.

You used to before, but there was some hope that recent FW updates have fixed this. Not sure the poster who thought it might be fixed ever reported back on it.

I get what your saying but i still dont see the appeal.

This is coming from someone who use to play wow hardcore, and loved to get the best gear and min/max stats to death and collecting mounts and pets. But the achievement factor of the game never appealed to me. I guess because in the end its just a couple of text.

It doesn't work for everyone, but it does for the majority of game players (not "gamers") - some people it just doesn't click with, and it sounds like you're one of them.

Why has this become the "I don't get achievements/trophies" thread?
Seriously. Usually you like them (incentives to play the game differently, the idea of being "rewarded" for doing something, incentive to keep playing or keep focused based on said "reward" principle, etc.), you hate them (find them obtrusive and having them pop "ruins" your experience), or you just don't really care or "get it". Nobody's going to convince you to see it differently, you are who you are and that's it. There's no "OH, NOW I GET IT" moment. It's just a preference like an opinion.

With that said (wow, I'm a grumpy old bastard this morning, sorry...), where's Toma at?
I want to know if I boot up a game today, should it be Alundra and should I be figuring out where the hell I left off at. :D

Also, VanWinkle, I really hope that UGnG being hard hasn't disuaded you from playing/liking it. :\

Hmmmm, let me check... 62 platinums. Probably has a lot to do with my OCD/perfectionism. Or the fact that I see it as a goal or challenge to get them all for games I like and I like being focused on that. Again, to each their own.

Speaking of trophies, I can't view mine. Every time I go into the Trophies app I get an error whether I am connected or offline. I tried rebuilding the databases after booting in safe mode but no luck. Please tell me I don't have to wipe the thing to get them to work again.

Yeah, they were hoping to do a retail release but in their most recent blog post they confirmed it's digital only for now. Still, the fact that we're getting it at all is insane, it's such a niche game. There are some other awesome games coming that will be digital only, like Picotto Knights, Guacamelee, as well as some more indie games that should be coming at some point next year like The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Lone Survivor, Snapshot.. others I wouldn't be surprised if they went all digital to save costs, like Dragon's Crown.

Quick google-fu says "try a hard reset".
(I think that's where you just hold the power button until it turns off.)

If that doesn't work, signs point to system restore.

I'm considering double dipping on Hot Shots for the digital version at that $9 price point. I think something is wrong with me.

To me trophies are just a pleasant but ultimately meaningless "prize" for something I did in a game. I never look at a given games trophy list until after I finish the game. If there's a trophy for something that would actually be fun to go for (e.g. jump this far in a vehicle, shoot this many enemies before dying, etc.) I consider those as added mini challenges that I enjoy from time to time.
