Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Does TWD really count as a downloadable title? I mean, once the game was finished it was released as a physical retail copy.

I'm not saying that every game that shows up on the lists is like that. But going into every list and knowing I am probably going to see The Walking Dead, Fez, Journey, FTL, and Mark of the Ninja because they are the bite sized games that got passed around the office is pretty boring. The discussions that take place for these awards rarely create meaningful back and forth. Instead these awards are consistently slotted with the same contestants and often end with the same small selection rising to the top each time because most of the staff played those games. There are even situations where it feels like the category was created specifically to shower one game with praise, and it is really an awkward experience to hear the cast fumble around pushing the winner they always had in mind to the finish line.

But sure, let's pat them on the back for playing the most approachable and popular strategy game of the year.
From what I've heard fez is anything but bite-sized.

Also far cry 3.

I just don't understand your argument really. Is it wrong to like compact game experiences?

'Papo y Yo should really be on this list. It's got a lot of dark stuff that
deals with the designer's abusive father
."

"How dark?"

"So dark I can't even talk about them."

"Oh, I guess it's in the top three then."

I usually have a pretty difficult time connecting with the taste and opinions of the Giant Bomb staff and primarily enjoy their stuff for the entertainment value, but Brad saying that Mass Effect 3 is better than Gears on a mechanical level is so unimaginable misinformed.

These game of the year lists are built inside this small Giant Bomb bubble, primarily out of short and easily consumable linear experiences that are eaten up by people who work at video game websites because they feel the need to play as many different games as possible.

So having played every Gears and every Mass Effect, I'm no better than "misinformed?"

I love you NeoGAF, don't ever change.

How is Dead or Alive 5? I was planning on picking it up, but I ended up putting it off.
Is it worth picking up and/or what is a reasonable asking price?

Come on, that's dimb, not NeoGAF and he has multiple people questioning his posts.

I know, but there are enough apparent crackpots on this forum to give the whole place a questionable reputation. If you aren't a regular here, it's hard to separate the reasonable discussion from the extremism.

At any rate, I should have kept reading to see him somehow characterize FTL as "bite-size" so I could just write the whole thing off.

Good thing you're a regular here, then.

People lose any sense of perspective when internet arguments are made, and trying to argue "legitimacy" is the ultimate inarguable trump card.

See the fervor of Slender in the last few pages for instance, and hopefully find condolence in that it's directed to EVERYONE, not just GB or you.

ooh... when i think bite sized i think something you can consume in small chunks (like... a bag of candy)... no clue what dimp is talking about.

Aren't most dl games this year long or longer than your average disc game?

I don't know dimb either. I don't know if he's a typically a level headed poster or an "extremist" but I know he made a couple points I disagree with on the last page. The bigger point is we're not a hive mind. I know for sure we have our share of rational and irrational posters but it's always a bad idea to just lump us all together.

Brad, throughout the multiple threads that are dedicated to your site, has it not occurred to you that the majority of us here are fans?

Hell, I bet a lot/most of us are subscribers who frequent this thread.

But you always keep on responding to the negativity. To be fair sometimes you respond to the others that have something to say.

It just feels like you ignore us on here that genuinely like what you all are doing.

"enough apparent crackpots"

That's just insulting.

Good lord at the Patrick hate in the Youtube comments. It's like all those people who would get banned on the forums have made this video their new home base to spew all kinds of slurs and boring "hipster" labels.

They don't get many Patrick videos, so they went all in. At least Patrick is taking it in jest on twitter.

Hilarious gif is hilarious.

Edit: Also, I love you Brad. I love you almost as much as I love bacon.

really don't get the Patrick hate. I really like what he brings to Giant Bomb.

TWD and FTL are bite sized? Uh...

Hell, I can't stand Phil Fish but calling Fez bite sized doesn't make any sense, either.

I really appreciate all the kind feedback you guys offer, but as someone who's really uncomfortable with self-promotion, acknowledging the praise feels a little too much like implicitly saying "you're right, we ARE totally great!"

Even reasonable criticism is perfectly fine. It's the arrogant "well they only think that because their taste is shit/they don't know what they're taking about" kind of stuff that I can't seem to let slide. I should take a break for a while.

I thought Papo & Yo taking a story nod over Spec Ops: The Line was a bad call; the game is a deeply personal story, yes, but I think the story was told in a very inelegant way - it's really, really hamfisted and over-the-top, and any subtlety or nuance is completely trampled by the midpoint of it all. I mean, you literally (ending spoiler)
throw infinitely spawning mannequins of the boy's sister at Papo to distract him and draw his attention so you can drop him off the world at the very end.
Not that Spec Ops is very subtle at all, but at least it asks the player to draw some more mental connections on his/her own.

As a piece of personal expression or even art therapy, Papo & Yo can be appreciated, but I think that as a piece of media for someone else to experience, it just was too overt and blundering in its messaging and "symbolism" in how it spells everything out plain as day to you. I felt like Patrick was the only one who had really played it, and the rest of the guys were a little hesitant to speak against it because of its sensitive topics and nature.

FWIW, I've been a Bombcast listener for years but this year finally opted to buy a premium membership to show some support and love for all of the good times. Glad I did, as these GOTY videos are goddamned amazing. The Hoarders one was spot-on -- we watch the show all the time at home to inspire us as we do chores and iron clothes. :)

To your credit on today podcast Brad, you were spot on with the ME3 multi player stuff. I had a lot of fun with it. More that Gears Horde.

I just don't understand your argument really. is it wrong to like compact game experiences?
No. I'm not saying anything bad about the games. Just that what is included in these discussions and on these lists fall inside of a fairly small sphere. There isn't very much variety to what's on here, and rarely is there discussion or backing to offer anything of value regarding the choices.
So having played every Gears and every Mass Effect, I'm no better than "misinformed?"

I love you NeoGAF, don't ever change.
I can only interpret the statement as misinformation. Sorry. Mass Effect has always prioritized the story and left the combat in the background. ME3 improves things but is still stuck trying to glue together pieces that don't really fit, and it carries that clunkiness with it. It still has inadequate recoil models and movement between cover. The level of understanding Epic has for creating shooters defined third person action games for this entire generation. ME3 is a distant echo at its very best.

Even when you were showing off ME3 for the end of the year stuff as to why it was the best game for you this year, I felt like you were emphasizing the specific story section rather than pushing forward a well designed combat scenario. If those are the things you like about Mass Effect that's fine, but it feels disingenuous to me to set it ahead of dedicated shooters when it comes to the action sequences.

Steady on now. We're not all OT posters here. :(

It's funny how the GOTY is coming down to a game that basically has no gameplay (TWD), and a game that's all about gameplay/systems (X-com). Interesting year for sure.

I think you can engage positive feedback beyond "YEP WE'RE AWESOME!" I think there's a middle ground between that and posting in such a way that you just seem to be constantly pissed off and agitated. I'm just happy you stop by at all man, don't stop and don't let the people with nothing better to do than put others down push you away.

Good example. While a lot of posters bust his balls for liking ME 3 there is still an active ME 3 multiplayer official thread in the Community forum of people who choose to play ME 3 multiplayer over other options. We really have no consensus here.
