Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Just finished Asura's Wrath. I think it would have made more of an impact if I hadn't known most of the big moments due to GB coverage, but it's my own fault for sitting on my copy for this long anyway. Not sure I can bring myself to pay for the DLC episodes, though, I'm just going to try to Youtube them.

By finished, do you mean you also did the final boss DLC?

If no, then do not youtube it. Play it.

I think you're about right, but I'm not sure ME3 will make the list. I feel like Brad put it high on his own list and that's enough. I don't think he'll fight for it as a general game of the year nominee because it is a broader, less personal category, and in such a category its more difficult to ignore the negative experience that most people had. Vinny might pull for it, but I wouldn't count on it. I'm gonna take your list and modify it just a bit 'cause I think you're mostly right:

1. X-COM
2. Walking dead
3. Far Cry 3
4. Fez
5. Journey
6. FTL
7. Mark of the Ninja
8. Forza Horizon
9. Asura's Wrath
10. Need For Speed: Most Wanted
We know 8 is a game Jeff didn't want on the top 10 at all, and Brad jokingly responded to that with implying he wanted it higher. There's no other game that fits with but ME3.

And Jesus Christ, at least Brad seems to get that these threads would be way more awkward if they responded to all the positive stuff that's said about them. I feel that that's the thin line that separates our threads from their official forums and we still have the occasional discussion about Jeff's feet's sweat's taste.

Day 4 recap vid was thoroughly enjoyable. Great acting by Jeff.
Not only that, but it was a pretty spot on parody too! The black-and-white slow-mo reprises of stuff that happened 30 seconds ago, people responding to criticism with heavily cut angry outbursts of saying the same thing thrice, incredible. Written like they've seen a lot of those shows, which makes me wish for a Storage Wars parody today.

I don't really see a good reason to. It's money I don't really feel like spending and the amount of actual "playing" in this game is minimal and not that fun.
Not really happy even having to play True Episode 18, since it's mostly the same

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about those comments getting out. Well, never mind my list then.

I completely agree with Jeff, Mass Effect's multiplayer is boring as hell.

Call of Duty, Halo, or countless other titles like Natural Selection II, Syndicate, Guild Wars 2, Borderlands, or even Sonic Kart racing had better multiplayer this year.

This is the problem with the guys doing a multiplayer category. To think that GW2 wasn't even mentioned is crazy. Or Planetside 2. Then again Jeff has dismissed PS2 after what an hour playing it? PS2 has problems but SOE have done many things right with it, and the F2P mechanic within it. I think his main gripe was the time required to earn certs to level up your class and vehicle. Not really a problem if you are good at the game:)

I know it is all personal opinion, and I never really get heated about people disagreeing with me but as a fan of playing multiplayer games this made me cringe. I would rather that they drop it, and play to their strengths.

I had no clue that's where Dragon's Dogma went. Man, that sounds interesting. Very Nameless One.
Total surprise coming out of left field, too. I honestly thought the battle with the dragon would be the final boss of the game.

But they spring an entire dungeon on you after that, and with a solid explanation that ties the world together very well.

these videos are terrible.

when GB does scripted/acting stuff its just painful to watch

i'm just skipping through the videos to get to the bit where they play a game.

no idea why they wasted so much time on this stuff when it would have been much easier to just record video of them playing games.

merry christmas GB!

Ugh go to literally any other gaming site on the web for you to indulge your apparent love for homogenous, humourless GOTY coverage.

the classic gb stuff like the farcry 3 part was great, they just didnt need to waste so much time on the acting stuff. i don't see how people can think scripted and poorly acted gb is better than freestyle

The hate for Patrick really confirms my prejudice about the dudebro nature of the most vocal part of the GB audience (obviously not talking about most of GAF here). Patrick is probably my favorite GB'er precisely because he is more interested in indie games, niche games etc. Jeff, for example, has tastes diametrically opposed to mine. His GOTY is my most disappointing OTY. That's why I really like the dynamic Patrick brought to the cast.

They pretty muched dismissed GW2 after an hour aswell. Anything non console multiplayer generally never hits with these guys. GW2 and PS2 are by far the best multiplayer games this year. The fact that GB dont get it doesnt change anything about that.

Far Cry 3 not winning most disappointing is a sham, a sham I tell you. I really hope it doesn't get on the top 10, only Jeff had it on his list so far right?

I don't see how it's a sham most of them were at least sceptical about it pre launch. It's not most squandered opporunities it's games that they thought would be good/great but weren't.

It's also on Brads list

You make it sound like they have zero self-awareness about what they are doing in these videos and seem to be missing the whole point of them.

Ironically except for the fact that Jeff was way into GW1 and PS1.
And don't forget about that star trek lifetime sub burning that hole into his pocket.

IOS is also a thing they get way into, moreso than most pro IOS guys on gaf even imo.

Dota 2 is 2012's 2013 multiplayer goty imo :P

Weird, is it just me or the mp part of gw2 the dullest part? The lack of holy trinity just makes it feel messy. Maybe pvp is awesome, don't know, not really a pvp mmo guy.

Planetside just came out and I don't think they generally "count" MMOs in their multiplayer category.

Well damn, sorry for your loss :(

I'm very sorry to hear that. Don't worry about the OP, man.

:(
WOW Thanks
Sorry for your loss man.

Don't worry about it man, your personal circumstances matter more.

My Condolences.
WOW Thanks everyone (on my phone at work cant really type much more now).
Even though your just screennames this really means a lot to me :O

Wow xcom is 17.50 on gmg.

Yeah this whole downloadable category thing gotta die. With sales on pc super frequent, price is negligible, pretty much the same playing field.

I guess they pick different #1's on purpose, so that they have a different game to showcase each day?

ok just watched day 4, that was actually quite moving. sometimes its easy to forget about the stress covering videogames all day every day puts on these guys, hope Jeff gets the help he needs.

All of GB is interested in indie and niche games. They rarely adore the mainstream stuff.

I really don't think any of them are being dishonest just so they can showcase different games in their recap videos. The could do that anyway, as they have in previous years. I think it just worked out neatly this time.

Nah, they'd show a #2 or #3 game if there was overlap. Happened last year, might happen today.
Oh, didn't know that. I figured it must've been up to coincidence.

Walking Dead's animations look so stiff and awkward whenever it is shown in the (brilliant) day four recap.

It is, Telltale need a new engine. It's nearly 2013 and they don't have the same open world excuse games like Skyrim and Far Cry 3 have for being janky as fuck. They aren't pushing the same raw power as something like Uncharted either, they really should be focusing on getting the animation closer to that level.

I think it's unfair for the entirety of the Walking Dead series to be considered for the downloadable category. They were individual releases; they should've selected one particular episode or had all of them compete with one another individually.

I guess it depends on the platform you played it on. On PC you bought the whole game up front and the episodes were just Steam updates. There is no way to buy them individually on PC, as far as I know.

I think on XBLA they were released as separate purchasable pieces. I'm not sure about PSN.

On PSN the first episode is a game, episodes 2-5 are add-ons for it. You can buy an episode for $4.99 but of course they all require the first episode, you can also buy the full pack for $19.99.

Patrick is such a sucker for a good premise. It doesn't matter if the developers pull it off or if they make a garbage game, dude just loooooooves premise.

I kind of wish (I can't believe I am going to say this) that he had a louder voice in the GoTY deliberations since he is just the polar opposite of Jeff.

"If there is ever a game that encapsulated a person Fez is it" Man, that's the meanest thing anyone has ever said about Fez.

If anything, Ryan and Vinny seem very out of the convo this year. I suppose everything till now was a pretty throwaway category, but I know Vinny is usually way more vocal.

He seemed more vocal today arguing for Mass effect 3.

From what I've seen maybe most of the categories didn't interest him?

Vinny says a lot but always seems to be the first to back off, unless it's something he feels very strongly about. I wish he would push a little harder because his taste in games is a little closer to mine.

You mean for most disappointing game? Yeah that's about the only time he spoke up..but even then it was just to defend a shitty game from not being crowned most shitty.

I really didn't like the Day 1 video. It wasn't funny at all. I mean the concept was worth a smirk. That's about it. Not interested enough to watch the rest of them. I will listen to the podcasts though.
