Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Vinny knows if they don't care about something. He'll argue if it has a chance or if he really wants it to win or be listed.

If anything, Ryan and Vinny seem very out of the convo this year. I suppose everything till now was a pretty throwaway category, but I know Vinny is usually way more vocal.

I was disappointed that Vinny didn't fight a bit more for Yesterday for best story. That game is great.

I'd do the same thing though. He is the only one with a kid to go home to, he doesn't want to sit and argue about vidjama games all night (at least that's how I feel at the end of a shitty meeting!)

He also needs to work with Drew on the videos too. There's a lot on his plate.

You mean for most disappointing game? Yeah that's about the only time he spoke up..but even then it was just to defend a shitty game from not being crowned most shitty.

Yeah, I'm just guessing that most of the games they brought up so far for contention didn't make him feel strongly enough to talk about it except in that session.

He had a pretty busy year after all. Can't imagine how it'd affect gaming in his lifestyle.

It's up to Vinny to get Sleeping Dogs its props. When you watch the QLs, you can tell that the guy really loved that game. It would be a shame if it doesn't get a single award.

Everyone was reminiscing about how good Journey was when their partner disappeared or died or logged off and I thought for sure it was gonna win. Then it didn't. Wat.

Also I hate the Fez love. Never played it, never will, but my unbased hatred of that game still stands.

For sure. Definitely seems like the hardest working man in the office.

I kind of wish Drew, Vinny and Dave would do a separate podcast. Game of the Year for Adults or something like that. That'd be rad. I would re-sub for that.

I really love Giantbomb's GOTY process. Most publications just throw up a quick page with a short paragraph of text, or a short video. Makes the whole thing seem totally throwaway, might as well say "We picked Journey because Journey is pretty rad".

With GB's you get suspense, the gradual build-up to the arguments you know are coming. Brad trying to defend Mass Effect 3 from the rest tearing it apart, Vinny trying to be nice about everything, Jeff arguing that as a game Walking Dead is not a particularly fun one, Patrick hating Far Cry 3's story, and a descent into the technical nightmares of all of them. Not sure what Ryan will be doing, hopefully digging in for Xcom.

Hope the last podcast is like 4 hours.

The one complain I will make is that the order for consuming all the content is tricky to do without blowing a surprise from another part. You can't watch the recaps before listening to the podcast, clearly. But you also can't watch the whole recap without watching the personal top ten's as they announce "Jeff's GOTY" after parody/recap. But you also can't watch the personal top-ten's first because they contain snippets of the parody (also they are posted 2 hours later). So you have to go: Podcast -> 1st 10 mins of recap video -> Personal Top 10's -> Rest of recap.

My favorite part of the podcast GotY debates are when we get to the point where a discussion over a particular award has clearly gone on for far too long and all the guys really start to reach for reasons why the game they don't want to win doesn't deserve the award. It's when they just start nit-picking that the true comedy erupts.

One of my favorite examples of that was from last year, when the ridiculously long Skyrim v. Saints Row 3 debate had clearly worn all of them down to the point where I don't think they even realised what they were arguing about anymore.

At one point, Jeff said with complete honesty that he doesn't feel like Skyrim should win over SR3 because "You fight a lot of ice guys." I just about fell out of my chair laughing.

I wish the daily 1-hour podcast was a norm for the site. THIS I would gladly pay the subscription fee for. I always try to stretch out the weekly podcast as long as I can but with commutes and all that it usually goes in 2-3 days. An hour of new Bombcast a day is so good..

That does sound pretty good because those 3 combined would probably come up with a list that would most closely match my own.

I'd call it Flight Club Game of the Year or something a little less snarky.

I love (well, hate) when they read Chivalry on the list and were like..wtf..oh..Drew..yeah take it off.

I love that giantbomb make an event out of the games of the year awards because its something that I've always found fascinating, in all forums. However, this year, the parody videos have grated on me so I've been trying to skip them. I feel bad for the people who don't listen to the podcast and those videos are the only way they see the awards, because if you don't click with them you aren't going to stick around to see who won what in what category.

I reckon they could refine the process a bit and have the silly amateur drama hour in the personal top 10s instead of the actual award announcements. It's a lot to slog through to hear about 4 winning categories.

The podcasts though, first class all the way. Every morning I wake up and can't wait to listen to the next one.

Chivalry is a top 5 game for me but I knew it wasn't something the main guys were particularly interested in. I'm satisfied that Drew put it on his top 10 and had it mentioned for Multiplayer Game of the Year. That game is just gleeful fun like few other games. Hilarious but at the same time it also has some very satisfying combat mechanics.

All of GB is interested in indie and niche games. They rarely adore the mainstream stuff.

But their podcasts and lists are still very much dominated by mainstream stuff. Games like Batman, Far Cry, XCom, Mass Effect, Walking Dead etc. Some indie darlings like Hotline Miami and FTL are also there, but it's still the same games all the other outlets are also talking about. I would love if they talked about more stuff like that helicopter sim Drew liked, Yesterday that Vinny liked, Crusader Kings 2, Legend of Grimrock etc. Amazing games from smaller publishers/indies that don't get a huge amount of attention.

I was going to respond to that exact poster..but decided not to. Been down this path for years. Yes, the guys do wander off the beaten path a few times, but in the end they always return to shit like ME3 is game of the year!! Them playing Fez and some iPhone game does not mean they are into niche or indie.. though Vinny and Patrick do represent that group a bit. They make it clear they play the games they like. There's a reason there's no mmos, rpgs, fighters (Jeff playing the arcade mode of a fuckin fighter does not mean he's into fighters), etc blah blah..

haha, I'm listening to the podcast now. Brad is so relieved when "most disappointing" starts to break to AssCreed

Jeff trying to make sure everyone knows ME3 sucks is the most earnest I've ever heard him on any of the podcasts. It feels like he's trying to break the spell that the series has cast on the rest of the crew but they just won't listen. I feel bad.

Finally caught up which means I can click on this topic. Top 10 prediction!

1. XCOM
2. Walking Dead
3. Far Cry 3
4. Mark of the Ninja
5. Fez
6. Journey
7. Trials Evolution
8. Sleeping Dogs
9. Syndicate
10. Mass Effect 3

Sorry everyone for not updating, had a death in the family yesterday.
So do not really know when the next OP update will take place :(.

Update when I can.
Sorry to hear, Dutch Slayer. Don't worry about that stuff, your personal issues are far more important.

I kind of wish (I can't believe I am going to say this) that he had a louder voice in the GoTY deliberations since he is just the polar opposite of Jeff.
Patrick has definitely been contributing more to the categories this year than last, that's for sure.

I was disappointed that Vinny didn't fight a bit more for Yesterday for best story. That game is great.
Eh, I feel it should get a mention, but that's about it. I don't know that I would consider pushing it for any awards in any category. It was a decent experience, but not a game I felt should be winning any awards.

I love (well, hate) when they read Chivalry on the list and were like..wtf..oh..Drew..yeah take it off.
They all admitted they didn't play it, but Brad (and I think Patrick or Vinny?) said they saw it being played and it looked pretty crazy/fun. I think that's the best you could hope for when it comes to a game none of them played. Drew got the name out there one last time, and I think that's all it was meant to be.

Yeah, I really like when they go off the beaten path as you say, and that's why I feel Patrick was a great addition to the cast. It would also be very interesting (and possibly slightly awkward) if they added someone who loved old-school hardcore RPGs, Dark Souls, roguelikes, etc and felt that punishment and frustration in gaming is often necessary to sweeten the eventual victory. Basically the anti-Jeff.

Or...

Evil Jeff

Can someone tell me what the iphone/ipad game they were mentioning was, I listened as I fell asleep and forgot, only remember it was 99 cents and they swore by it, I think it was on Day Four.

I really, seriously wish Brad would've played vanilla ME3 first, then tried the new ending+dlc after processing that. I don't think it would destroy his opinion of the game, I just wish everyone at the table had the same base to build an opinion on.

I think it's good Brad played the DLC version to highlight how fucking retarded the choice was.

Like I said, though, having seen them play that DLC, it still doesn't improve the story.

Had to skip through the Best Story discussion for fear of spoilers. Need to play/finish some games first. On to Disappointing cuz I need to hear this!

I enjoyed the "horde more" of ME3 way more than I should have, there is definitely something intangible about it even though on paper it sounds boring.

10,000,000?
They also love Space Team, but that is free.

Space Team! thanks.

I guess in the end, he'd still consider ME3 to be goty even if he played vanilla. I dunno.

God damn. So much crazy story stuff this year from Japan.

And wow hearing someone talk about ac3 ending reaffirms how retarded the whole thing is. Same with far cry 3 ending too. What's up with ubisoft games and stories? French people... or Canadians?

It's my GOTY with the original ending, I would suppose it would still be his.

Impossible to say, but I know I would have liked the game at least a bit less, since the two mid-game DLCs were among my favorite parts. But then, I was also willing to put up with a good deal of mediocrity because I like that universe so much.

I actually thought about that too. I figured the decent mp balanced it out for him but hearing his thoughts in these podcasts, it def seems like he overgraded it. Or (good timing with Brad above) he was able to see past the shittiness because of how much they were invested in that series by then.

It's my only thing I dare to complain so far, I don't get all the strong hate and then the review. I guess the DLC stuff was the nail in the coffin.
edit: Hah, Brad is tagged!

ME3 was a better game than AC3 overall so AC3 was the right decision. And AC3 was so much more broken than ME3.

You made me think I should just wait for the next ME game to come out with all DLC before I get it. Unless reviews are super stellar.

Btw, gonna quit the AC series now?

Yeah understandable.

the classic gb stuff like the farcry 3 part was great, they just didnt need to waste so much time on the acting stuff. i don't see how people can think scripted and poorly acted gb is better than freestyle

it was so much better when they were working at gamestop

Oh yeah just remember something, I recall you didn't think too fondly of the console versions of far cry 3, yet they still scored the same 5/5. GB supports separate scores for different versions, so what's up?

I think Jeff only slams ME3 so hard because Brad supports it so much. Those two are always at opposite ends of the spectrum come GOTY time.

I'm really disappointed that Brad seems so anti-Walking Dead winning awards despite it ranking so high on his list -- it just doesn't seem right without Brad and Jeff digging in against each other, and Jeff is by far the most skeptical on Walking Dead's prospects as a video game.
