Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

It's already been done. You guys need to go back and play Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy to refresh your memory.
the one where the chick fucks a zombie neo that she barely knows in a train car in the camp of the secret order of the hobos and it's implied that their baby has alien superpowers?

It's tough to put too much stock in the Giantbomb GOTY list because not everyone spent the same amount of time, if any, with all the games. It really just turns into who makes the most compelling argument for the games unique to their top 10. Which is fine by me. Jeff asserted himself with Far Cry 3 and Syndicate and the other guys just rolled over. Good on him.

GB's never pretended to definitiveness or to any semblance of objectivity

When their talking about Far Cry 3 they all seem to be off put by the fact that their is a topless scene, and especially Patrick seems utterly disgusted when one of them mentions a sex scene and without him even seeing it or knowing anything about it he completely sighs and writes it off. Theirs also nothing sexual or erotic about it. In fact it's actually quite morbid and is there for good reason.

he put Catherine on his list last year, didn't he?

I view Giantbomb's GOTY of the year content as a celebration of gaming rather than a prestige award show where winning matters. Thats why they produce funny videos, and play the games, and talk about the games. Its also in favor of giving us an inside look on how these decisions are made. You dont have to agree with the final decisions, I know I probably dont, but whatever. Unless the game was nominated or won something like "worst game" then every game they discussed should just be celebrated for being decent.

Suddenly another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did, they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed wise and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves. When others spoke they seemed harsh and uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in the hearts of those under the spell. For some the spell lasted only while the voice spoke to them, and when it spoke to another they smiled, as men do who see through a juggler’s trick while others gape at it. For many the sound of the voice alone was enough to hold them enthralled; but for those whom it conquered the spell endured when they were far away, and ever they heard that soft voice whispering and urging them. But none were unmoved; none rejected its pleas and its commands without an effort of mind and will, so long as its master had control of it.

"Well?" it said now with gentle question. "Why not put Syndicate on the list? Will you give me nothing in this debate?" Its tone was that of a kindly heart aggrieved by injuries undeserved.
Then GAF laughed. The fantasy vanished like a puff of smoke.

The hate for Patrick really confirms my prejudice about the dudebro nature of the most vocal part of the GB audience (obviously not talking about most of GAF here). Patrick is probably my favorite GB'er precisely because he is more interested in indie games, niche games etc. Jeff, for example, has tastes diametrically opposed to mine. His GOTY is my most disappointing OTY. That's why I really like the dynamic Patrick brought to the cast.

preach. this. shit. PREACH

Catherine at least tries to address sex and relationships in a serious manner (and I like the ending, so what can ya do).

The fact that it has a
trans
character that is treated somewhat seriously is a bonus.

Listening to the day 5 cast just now. Crazy how much of a push Syndicate got, its hot mess of boss battles overrode any of the good will from its shooting. It's like they were dared to make worse bosses than deus ex and succeeded.

I got the impression that it's for the multiplayer only that it made the list.

Indigo Prophecy jokes are still the best jokes.

I'm really surprised by how positive they were on the Sleeping Dogs melee combat. I thought it was simple, but good enough. Maybe being good enough in an open world game with lots of other stuff going on is impressive in itself though.

How do they justify putting ME3 in their top 10 while also being a runner up for most disappointing? That's awful, especially because it went in over great games like Hotline Miami and FTL. It was basically just Brad and Vinny digging in their heels and filibustering because they love Mass Effect as a series. That really makes me more mad than it should. But it feels like it's only in there because of its title.

It just seemed like no one really wanted to fight this year. Everyone came in with their one or two games they needed in the top ten, and they lost a lot of the fun as a result. It makes the latter half of the top ten very hollow, with most of the games really only played or enjoyed by at most two of them.

Didn't they have Hot Pursuit in their top five a couple years ago? Brad axes the whole genre from contention this year. =P

Yeah, it felt more based on agendas than truly making a comprehensive top 10. It just comes off as ill-conceived and amateurish.

I mean is there any way to truly make a top 10 list with group of people of almost any size that will make everyone happy?

It has always been about the journey with the giantbomb top ten. The podcasts were epic. This year it just fell flat, that journey was lackluster as a result of everyone holding so strongly to one or two "statement games." Heck, the worst game award had a better discussion than any point during the goty.

This is what I'm wondering. Assassin's Creed wasn't even allowed to be considered, but apparently being a runner up in the most disappointing category means it can still be top 10 of the year.

I don't think they've had any pretense of creating a indepth well thought out list of the best games of the year. The fact that most of have games in the list haven't been played by everyone should have made that even more obvious. They've said repeatedly, it's the games they liked the most and the podcast is just a recording of them picking games.

But it conflicts with their own awards. The personal top 10's are fair game, I understand. But at this point the overall site's judgement is conflicting with itself. It's a sign of less than thorough deliberation, and it comes off as unbecoming and unprofessional from a group of guys I really respect. I couldn't even see IGN or G4 pulling something like that.

So Brad argues for fucking Skyrim last year, the jankiest game of the last year. Then the bastard takes a stand against Xcom as unacceptable this year for bugs. Jesus.

I almost want to play Syndicate...

It's good, but I wished there was more of a fight about it. As far as I'm concerned, giant bomb can put out whatever top ten they want. I just think this year's podcasts are the worst they have ever done. It was boring when everyone made concessions nonstop just so they can argue when no one else is looking.

His response to that a little while ago was:

Rudds said:
Faulty logic. XCOM bugs stopped me dead in my tracks multiple times, to the point that I didn't even finish it. Nothing like that ever happened with Skyrim. Hell, a lot of that game's bugs end up being funny or endearing.

I had the save bug in Walking Dead. I am still able to look past my personal experience.

I would have less problem with Brad if others were more willing to csll him on his bullshit.

Go ahead, righteous video game crusader. Succeed where they have failed. Call me on my bullshit.

He shouldn't enjoy a game because you didn't enjoy it? What is this?

Your tone is pretty crappy btw.

Brad, I respect you and your opinion, but Mass Effect 3 belonged nowhere above great games like FTL and Hotline Miami. Especially on the site's official Top 10. Your personal Top 10 exists for a reason. What if someone doesn't listen to the podcast and simply reads the awards. Are they to believe that Mass Effect 3 is both one of the three biggest disappointments of the year and one of the ten best games? It reflects poorly. I expect more from Giant Bomb. I'm not trying to hate. I'm not trying to say you're bad at your job. I'm simply saying it's nonsensical and honestly a bit unprofessional. I'm upset about it because it offends me as a fan.

Didn't vinny argue about it pretty hard too?

I think it's the same as syndicate in that how did a game only one person played end up in a collective top 10?
