Do you guys think if they weren't so transparent about it, the choices would be easier to swallow? Seems like a big problem was the compromising being more prominent than the previous years.

So much begging the question it just wants to go home.
Kind of a boring discussion this year. No one seemed to give a shit about the list at all.
Ya and many of the game's most emotional moments are ruined because of bugs. The scene with duck in act 3 is a lot less impact-full when his character model isn't there.
I for one do NOT agree with Walking dead being top 2. It's not a better GAME than Far Cry 3. Hell they put Walking dead up on that spot simply for it's narrative which is total bullshit. They even said that some of it's gameplay mechanics are garbage. Guess an engaging narrative is the only thing you need to be in the top 5 games of the year for some.

The crew was way more into WD than FC3 this year, so that doesn't bother me at all.

In the end it's their choice, it's their website. I respect that. But I still can state my disagreement with their choice. Like Jeff Mathis said on the Weekend confirmed podcast, I think Walking dead gets a free pass because of it's narrative: it does stuff that other games haven't done yet.
The Witcher 2, an awesome game that belonged on top 10 lists was a game only one of the cast members played last year and got to be on the top 10 list and runner up for best story.
4:00PM Jhonen Vasquez's Top 10 Games of 2012
of course, but it seemed like it was only just jeff trying to get on there. surprised to see everyone back off and drop some of those other games and go off what jeff had to say about it
yeah lol, he was pretty clear on how much he digged hotline but got nowhere
Mass Effect 3 finally transitioned the Mass Effect franchise into a big dumb action movie, and in many ways that was an incredibly sad experience. The people and places we've discovered and grown to care about were finally reduced to things for Shepard to blow up and places for her to blow things up in, and this ruined the game for me so thoroughly that by the end, when we learned that we shouldn't have even bothered hanging on to our Mass Effect save files for five years, it was just salt in the wound.
In Mass Effect 1, we muddled through long elevator rides and boring vehicle combat so we could learn more about the incredible Mass Effect universe--the game rewarded our efforts by teaching us about richly-textured worlds and cultures. Mass Effect 2 had a lazy plot and more boring combat, but was mostly saved by a great "building your team" story where we got to meet fantastic new characters.
ME3 went wrong because it recycled people and places from the first two games and revisited them only as a series of set pieces for us to blow things up in (we even blew things up on the Citadel, twice). That's a fundamental problem for a Mass Effect game, because what was fun about this franchise wasn't the specific worlds and characters it introduced but the thrill of their discovery. Without that I'm just some guy shooting at lizards and aliens with a machine gun, and what the fuck am I supposed to learn about the human condition from that?
Anyway this dumb game is in my top ten because of the part with Mordin in the elevator.
Ryan is friends with him I think....what.

Are people annoyed by syndicate because their favourite game didn't make the list or have they actually played the multiplayer?
These guys know each others tastes very well and trust each others opinions, if Jeff (or Vinny last year, or Patrick with ZombiU) says a game is really good and backs it up with solid arguments i don't see the problem. Sometimes a debate just goes that way. I dunno these lists don't seem that hard to swallow, it's not like they pretend these are objective or absolut nor are there any terrible games on there
Patrick, Vinny, you let me down. I think it was mentioned once during the podcasts. Maybe it was determined to be ineligible?
I should find the Witcher love casts from last year when Vinny was burying himself in all things Witcher.
Ryan is friends with him I think.
It's basically the same game on 360, it doesn't make sense to include it in their top10 again. The only category where it fits is 2012's 2011 GotY because the Enhanced Edition was pretty good.
In The Walking Dead you don't separate gameplay mechanics and story. They're built together and go hand in hand throughout all five episodes.
For example:
This is a gameplay mechanic.
The issue I have when bringing up this is that Alpha Protocol did all mechanics TWD tried but better and with more ambition years before TWDs release. The only thing TWD has over AP is that it has a few heart wrenching moments, yet it gets put on every-bodies top 10 list when AP ended up on nobodies.
The Walking Dead is the best game I played this year. I've never been so engaged by the characters and story in any game ever. I haven't played XCOM yet. Trials Evolution is a close 2nd this year. Fez is one of the most overrated games I've personally ever played and doesn't even belong in my top 20 this year.
Eh, I don't really think his work fits the feel of the site. What
Surprised they never hit him up for any art, Jhonen didnt seem to really be doing much in 08
I saw it running on a PS3 (downloaded version) and it ran like ass. A good almost second of loading before every camera perspective change.
Spelunky got robbed everywhere.
Was this that indie dude that sort of butted heads with Jaffe at e3?
I feel like as long as Brad managed to get ME3 in the top ten, he wasn't going to debate anyone about their particular favorite getting a spot. Same with Patrick and Fez, as well as Vinny and Sleeping Dogs. Alex just didn't present a strong enough argument for Hotline Miami, since the rest of the spots were filled up by games that the majority of the guys liked and not just one or two of them.
Either way, I think it's a strong list overall with a good amount of variety. It's just unfortunate that Forza and FTL had to be cut.
I will say that I have yet to hear the guys have such a ridiculous debate as the time when, two years ago, Brad managed to single-handedly convince all of the guys that Minerva's Den (Bioshock 2 DLC) was the best Downloadable Add-On of the year even when three of them were ready to give it to Lair of the Shadow Broker (from ME2) and had never even touched Minerva's Den. A day that will go down in history as the day that Stonewall Shoemaker was born.
A decision that is vindicated over and over TO THIS DAY.

Am I blind or was there no Dave top 10 this year?
