Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Do you guys think if they weren't so transparent about it, the choices would be easier to swallow? Seems like a big problem was the compromising being more prominent than the previous years.

No, it would be more mind boggling. There would still be comparisons to their individual top 10s, and the fact we got to hear the arguments for each game is better.

I laughed at Patrick's Fez/Phil Fish argument. Pretending it just wasn't blatant name-dropping, was that actually supposed to win anyone over?

I understand everyone buying Jeff's enthusiasm and letting it go on the list. He was praising it so much and the things he said were so interesting that I'm sure as hell ordering it.

I looked up if it has local split screen and it doesn't, though, which is a bummer. Sounds like the game I'd like to play with the missus.

Kind of a boring discussion this year. No one seemed to give a shit about the list at all.

Ryan made an off hand comment that if they want the podcasts to run a reasonable length that they would have to curb the silliness, but thats what we want from our podcasts. Heated discussions and silliness.

Syndicate and ZombiU in the top 10 still seems so odd for I.

I for one do NOT agree with Walking dead being top 2. It's not a better GAME than Far Cry 3. Hell they put Walking dead up on that spot simply for it's narrative which is total bullshit. They even said that some of it's gameplay mechanics are garbage. Guess an engaging narrative is the only thing you need to be in the top 5 games of the year for some.

Ya and many of the game's most emotional moments are ruined because of bugs. The scene with duck in act 3 is a lot less impact-full when his character model isn't there.

Oh wow, I never had anything that bad. I just had framerate and audio sync issues, and this was on the 360. I've had the same poor experience with stuff like puzzle agent and back to the future.

Telltale really seems to get a pass because they use cool licenses. This being a down year for AAA games helped elevate it too.

I would switch Far Cry with Walking Dead too, based on play mechanics. But it seems the staff members judged the products on their personal entertainment value and not on a mechanical level, even though people like Ryan stated that they wanted something 'new and fresh' for the GotY-lists.

The crew was way more into WD than FC3 this year, so that doesn't bother me at all.

The Witcher 2, an awesome game that belonged on top 10 lists was a game only one of the cast members played last year and got to be on the top 10 list and runner up for best story.

Are people annoyed by syndicate because their favourite game didn't make the list or have they actually played the multiplayer?

These guys know each others tastes very well and trust each others opinions, if Jeff (or Vinny last year, or Patrick with ZombiU) says a game is really good and backs it up with solid arguments i don't see the problem. Sometimes a debate just goes that way. I dunno these lists don't seem that hard to swallow, it's not like they pretend these are objective or absolut nor are there any terrible games on there

In the end it's their choice, it's their website. I respect that. But I still can state my disagreement with their choice. Like Jeff Mathis said on the Weekend confirmed podcast, I think Walking dead gets a free pass because of it's narrative: it does stuff that other games haven't done yet.

When you rank games purely on mechanics and graphics, you might have a point.
That has nothing to do with Giantbomb's GOTY though.

Finishing TWD is something I won't soon forget. Great characters, actual hard choices to make and a gripping narrative. I already have my money in hand for season two.

Finishing Far Cry 3 on the other hand left me very underwhelmed. I experienced a rather mindless open-world romp which was entertaining until the story completely fell apart.
Fun in it's own way, but it doesn't even breach my top 20 of games I played this year. Great graphics though.

Anyway, all in all this was a fantastic week on Giantbomb. This shit will be very hard to top next year.

In The Walking Dead you don't separate gameplay mechanics and story. They're built together and go hand in hand throughout all five episodes.

For example:

Patrick, Vinny, you let me down. I think it was mentioned once during the podcasts. Maybe it was determined to be ineligible?

I should find the Witcher love casts from last year when Vinny was burying himself in all things Witcher.

Just looking over the list again and for a game they all totally seem to enjoy and praise I'm totally shocked FTL didn't make the cut and im even surprised that it was such a fight to get Sleeping Dogs on it. I still think the best game won and really that is all that matters.

of course, but it seemed like it was only just jeff trying to get on there. surprised to see everyone back off and drop some of those other games and go off what jeff had to say about it

yeah lol, he was pretty clear on how much he digged hotline but got nowhere

I feel like as long as Brad managed to get ME3 in the top ten, he wasn't going to debate anyone about their particular favorite getting a spot. Same with Patrick and Fez, as well as Vinny and Sleeping Dogs. Alex just didn't present a strong enough argument for Hotline Miami, since the rest of the spots were filled up by games that the majority of the guys liked and not just one or two of them.

Either way, I think it's a strong list overall with a good amount of variety. It's just unfortunate that Forza and FTL had to be cut.

I will say that I have yet to hear the guys have such a ridiculous debate as the time when, two years ago, Brad managed to single-handedly convince all of the guys that Minerva's Den (Bioshock 2 DLC) was the best Downloadable Add-On of the year even when three of them were ready to give it to Lair of the Shadow Broker (from ME2) and had never even touched Minerva's Den. A day that will go down in history as the day that Stonewall Shoemaker was born.

Cards Against Humanity Guy's Top 10

Mass Effect 3 finally transitioned the Mass Effect franchise into a big dumb action movie, and in many ways that was an incredibly sad experience. The people and places we've discovered and grown to care about were finally reduced to things for Shepard to blow up and places for her to blow things up in, and this ruined the game for me so thoroughly that by the end, when we learned that we shouldn't have even bothered hanging on to our Mass Effect save files for five years, it was just salt in the wound.

In Mass Effect 1, we muddled through long elevator rides and boring vehicle combat so we could learn more about the incredible Mass Effect universe--the game rewarded our efforts by teaching us about richly-textured worlds and cultures. Mass Effect 2 had a lazy plot and more boring combat, but was mostly saved by a great "building your team" story where we got to meet fantastic new characters.

ME3 went wrong because it recycled people and places from the first two games and revisited them only as a series of set pieces for us to blow things up in (we even blew things up on the Citadel, twice). That's a fundamental problem for a Mass Effect game, because what was fun about this franchise wasn't the specific worlds and characters it introduced but the thrill of their discovery. Without that I'm just some guy shooting at lizards and aliens with a machine gun, and what the fuck am I supposed to learn about the human condition from that?

Anyway this dumb game is in my top ten because of the part with Mordin in the elevator.

Agreed.

It's basically the same game on 360, it doesn't make sense to include it in their top10 again. The only category where it fits is 2012's 2011 GotY because the Enhanced Edition was pretty good.

My hope was in Patrick listing it because it was new to him and Vinny backing him up a bit but I was just kidding really, I didn't expect anything.

The issue I have when bringing up this is that Alpha Protocol did all mechanics TWD tried but better and with more ambition years before TWDs release. The only thing TWD has over AP is that it has a few heart wrenching moments, yet it gets put on everybodies top 10 list when AP ended up on nobodies.

This post tells the truth imho. Alpha Protocol did everything Walking Dead did on a conversational and choice level, except for the murdering children part ;)

I was still invested more in the characters for Walking Dead but it seems weird that everyone overlooked how AP handled things years earlier.

As great a game TWD is, it's getting overrated and overexposed. Same with Frog Fractions. Yeah Frog Fractions was pretty cool but come on.

The Walking Dead is the best game I played this year. I've never been so engaged by the characters and story in any game ever. I haven't played XCOM yet. Trials Evolution is a close 2nd this year. Fez is one of the most overrated games I've personally ever played and doesn't even belong in my top 20 this year.

I played XCOM and TWD. I'd put XCOM above TWD but I prefer numbers and lots of mechanics.

What
Surprised they never hit him up for any art, Jhonen didnt seem to really be doing much in 08
Eh, I don't really think his work fits the feel of the site.

Plus, they probably wouldn't want to have someone's work as identifiable as Jhonen's coloring someone's impressions of the site for better or worse.

I hated this argument that popped up more than once. Let's use position eight and nine as an example.

"This game feels more like a position 8 game than a position 9 game."

In what universe does this make sense? You inherently agreed that the games above it were acceptably 'better' than it by putting them above it in the first place. You then agreed that another game was better than it by adding it to the list above it and bumping it down a spot.

Then you're going to say that suddenly, because of list position alone, that the game you're championing suddenly deserves to be bumped up?

What? This makes no sense. List logic is dumb.

Otherwise, I had a great time listening. Thanks guys.

I saw it running on a PS3 (downloaded version) and it ran like ass. A good almost second of loading before every camera perspective change.

Same thing the 360 version did, it's unacceptable. PC version ran better but of course that's where the disappearing save bug pops up most often.

Hopefully the success of TWD means they can put some money towards building a better engine. Because christ if TWD Season 2 has as many technical issues as before I don't think people will be so forgiving the next time around.

A decision that is vindicated over and over TO THIS DAY.
