Dipset Desi's Albums of the Year

1.

Kendrick Lamar - good k.i.d. m.A.A.d. city; Kendrick delivers a cohesive album with a strong concept and storyline that offers depth while never feeling forced or in anyway detrimental to the song making process. He showcases a variety of flows, changes pace at will, and is self-aware enough to preach without abstaining himself of guilt. Sure the topics are quite familiar and a bit predictable at times, but Kendrick's passion is pretty much unparalleled. Some of the song structures are quite inventive with Kendrick even rapping in the voice of different characters, as are the beats, which helps the album from feeling repetitive despite its long length. GKMC is an album with layers that might be readily accessible, especially in this age of instant gratification and impersonal swag-toting self-ignorance. It reaches a level of introspection and emotion that other rappers would never touch. It's a shame how unsafe it has become to be real. GKMC is the album Kendrick wanted to make, not the album his studio told him to make.

Roc Marciano - Reloaded; The second most thematic rap album of the year. Roc's style is reminiscent of all the 90s coke rappers, but there's something even more mafioso-esque about his demeanor. His tone rarely changes even as he details just exactly how you're gonna bite the dust and he's gonna ride off with your shit, and he spits multi-syllabic rhymes line after line with such a furious repetition you can't but wonder why it still sounds so effortless. Roc is like the anti-hero that you don't know if you should root for, but his bravado and image is so cool that you can't help but concede to in the end.

Freddie Gibbs - BFK; Quite possibly the least cheesy pure trap album crafted this year featuring the wonderful rhythmic raspy baritone raps of a thug poet. Think Young Jeezy during his Recession phase, there's something truly masochistic hidden under all over the braggadocio and misogyny, but the shit is so catchy that it almost detracts from its serious undertones or least acts as a diversion. The album works well under the "fuck everything mantra," using fuck in both a sexual and violent sense. It's just super real and at the same time very materialistic and superficial.

Schoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions; Similarly to Deniro, Q possesses an ability to craft introspective storylines and also to make bumpable shallow tracks within the same thematic equation. However, Schoolboy Q's range of energy is much greater, going from ridiculously high-energy, to somberly sober sometimes within the same song and somehow it sounds rather fluid. Q is like a more self-aware version of early 50-Cent, as he is able to take a step back at his own destructive path and pose an interesting comment.

Deniro Farrar - Destiny Altered; Deniro manages to deliver an album coupling dark, paranoid, schizophrenic raps with somewhat experimental future-garage trap beats that match the large ambiance of his topics with a bass-driven wall of sound. Deniro is special because of his ability to meld the introspective with the shallow and then mold the subsequent contradiction into something interesting.

El-P - Cancer 4 Cure; Cancer 4 Cure is basically Fantastic Damage 2.0. His production is still unparalleled possessing futuristic sounds and a meticulous use of noise to create disorienting transitions and add yet another layer to an already impressive myriad of sounds. Also while Killer Mike is undoubtedly the better rapper, I do enjoy El-P's lyrics slightly more for their imagination and batshit insane theatrics. I really couldn't picture anyone else going over some of these beats and maintaining the some of sort dystopic cohesion.

Skeme - Alive & Living; For some people Skeme's raspy voice and one-note singularly trap-focused raps might detract from their overall enjoyment, but it only impressed me more. There aren't any songs "for the ladies" on here, or any stops from the high-octane bravado for moments of self-reflection. Skeme goes all in on every track and never lets up, and the rappers featured on this album feed off his hunger and provide amazing verses.

A$ton Matthews - Versace Ragz; There's something so raw and ridiculously high-octane about Matthews' breed of thug-rap, which also gets a boost from its swag-flair and bevvy of wrestling references. This is that shit you want on when you feel like jumping out your car and suplexing a ninja. This is that Sweet Chin Music. Snorting blow, fucking hoes, techs blasting out the window...

9.

French Montana - Mac and Cheese 3; Okay, I'm ashamed at how much I like this mixtape, but there's something undeniably special here. The ignorant slurs of Montana and the dense overly-produced tunes on this album are a match made in heaven. This is the quintessential guilty pleasure of the year, and it's a wonder that such a low-tier rapper would work well over such grandiose beats, but he does and in fact it seems to be the perfect formula. Mac and Cheese 3 gave me what I didn't know I wanted, and opened my ears to the beauty of near braindead ignorance.

10.

Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation;Lil Ugly Mane (Shawn Kemp) is undoubtedly a product of the the heydey southern trap rap, which in turn housed some of the darkest, most irreverent music of the genre. What's most impressive about Lil Ugly is his ability to make something that sounds so rooted in that era without overusing samples or relying on merely flipping old beats. Mista Thug Isolation wears it's influences on its sleeves, but it's composed entirely of original music and sounds organic enough to be placed alongside many of those albums of yesteryear.

Honorable Mention:

Game - Jesus Piece; Jesus Piece is good cover album. However, too often does the female/male collaborator disrupt a track's cohesion to the point where the religious/sacrilegious context of the album becomes lost. After hearing Holy Water I was hoping the album would mostly be compromised of dark, atmospheric religiously schizophrenic tracks. Half of the album is really good: Ali Bomaye, I Remember, Church, Jesus Piece, Name Me King, Pray, and Scared Now. See No Evil and Can't Get Right are prime examples of fantastic tracks marred by an overbearing singing hook. The sample in Can't Get Right is strong enough to stand alone. The lows of the album are really kind of cringe-worthy in my eyes. Blood Diamonds, All That Lady, and Celebration all try too hard to build upon the framework of previously successful songs and thus end up highlighting Game's biggest shortcomings in terms of his dependence on other performers and his lack of creative vision. A few snips and cuts and I think Game is left with a great album instead of a really good one.

Needs no introduction justification or anything. Listen to this album. Buy this album.

#2 The Alchemist //Russian Roulette; 3 points
This album is a symphony, a wonderful journey through the distorted melodic loops of alc's choosing. Its exactly what i needed in 2012 through the hard times: gutter concertos.

#3 Killer Mike //RAP Music; 3 points
I'm not a big fan of Killer Mike or El-P. However, something in this mix combined to make hip hop napalm. This shit is hot. It has all the energy and fire of the best tinfoil hat conspiracy rap without any of the corniness. It's Killer Mike coming clean with the audience, telling him what he really thinks. El blessed him with electronic backing that sounds downright soulful on some tracks, and like digital Bathory on others.

#4 Action Bronson x Alchemist // Rare Chandeliers; 2 points
Magical. It supposed to be exactly like I expected: the dark humor of everyone's fat idiot dumbass albanian rapper over some dark strings. I was surprised. There is some downright cheerful stuff on this LP. Alc throws some curveballs with multiple beat switches, and Action keeps pace. If you can't vibe with this absurd, off the wall insanity I pity you.


#5 El-P // Cancer 4 Cure ; 2 points
This was a total left field shot for me. I mentioned that I wasnt an El fan before... If Killer Mike's album made me a believer before, this album made me a fan. El drops some of the dissonant, perhaps overextended beats that he previously entertained for layered bombast. This album is what backpack sidepart hip hop needs, a bump of cocaine and a shot of whiskey. This is probably the most intelligent fight music i've heard.

#6 Sean Price // Mic Tyson ; 2 points
Speaking of fight music.... This is what can happen when a man has the wisdom to stay in his lane. This shit went so hard. Never before have i vibed to a rapper telling me that he'd make my mom suck his dick with bbq sauce on it b. I'm ashamed typing this.

#7 The RZA // Man With the Iron Fists OST ; 1 point
It's weird being a Wu stan in 2012. They are so so close to coming back hard. There are some straight up magical joints on here; White Dress, Rivers of Blood, Six Directions of Boxing, etc etc. Then there are some creative misses. I realize it is a movie OST, but the end product was SO much better than I expected.


#8 Freddie Gibbs // Baby Face Killa; 1 point
Gibbs brought it. He went with the appetizer platter approach. Meaning; a little bit of some shit for everyone. The southern joint. The kirko bangz WAH WAH WAH NAH NAH joint. That hard gangster shit. But it's good. I like gibbs. Next time, more focused and some more... Distinctive production? He'll have an AotY candidate.

#9 Nas // Life is Good ; 1 point
This album fell off a little for me. The impact of this is strange; its just odd to hear a man of Nas' age spitting with the intensity and focus several times that of the new guys. it's almost depressing. Actually, this album is depressing. It's good though.

MISCELLANEOUS AWARDS

Artist/Group of the Year- Man of the year is Kendrick, group of the year is TDE. You don't have an argument for anything else so stop it slime.

Producer of the Year- Looking at my list you think i'd say El or Alc right? Nope. Harry Fraud. He fell short on producing LP's all the way through, but he made some of the most magical shit. Using mediocre rappers half the time. Man is a wizard with loops and claps. Just listen to Bird on a Wire and Intro off Mac and Cheese 3.

Rookie of the Year- Gotta give it to Lute. He jumped out of bandcamp at all of GAF-HOP in a bit of a storm with his album West1996. Waiting and watching on this one. He should change his name and image a bit. But as far as retro shit? He eats Joey Bada$$'s lunch.

Feature Killer of the Year- Danny Brown and Styles P tie. I enjoyed every verse from these dudes this year. Shit was magical as hell.

Biggest Surprise- Liking Meek Mill D&N. I'm a hater though.

Biggest Disappointment- Live From the Underground. I bought this stale, boring ass album and i regret 1000% percent of it

Song of the Year- WOH by Currensy, Styles and Harry Fraud. Shit is miami vice city. Also big ups to Rivers of Blood and Pistol Grip. Great songs.

Verse of the Year- Nas on Triple Beam Dreams. Scarface dream music.

1. Killer Mike - RAP music 4 points
I've never been a huge fan of El-P's rapping but I loved his production, and I've never been a big fan of Killer Mike's beat selection but I love his voice and flow. So here we have the perfect example of two strengths cancelling out weaknesses. El-P really stepped it up too, giving us the kind of beats I would have never expected and yet sound distinctly "el-p". He took a southern feel and gave it an almost haunting vibe. I feel locked in to this album when I listen, for those 50 odd minutes, this album is all that exists. I love every single track on here, it's been a very long time since I could say that about an album.

2. Kendrick Lamar - GKMC 3 points
I didn't like section.80. I thought it was extremely mediocre and tedious, with only a handful of bright spots. So I had zero expectations for this one. More of the same shit I figured. Except Kendrick did exactly what I hoped he would do but never actually expected him to. He evolved his style and sound without simply trying to sound like whatever happened to be selling at the time. It’s a way more intelligent album than s.80 and more importantly it’s an album of such superior quality it’s remarkable. With only small missteps along the way (the complete shit hook on Real, not splitting up sing about me and dying of thirst, the fact that now or never even exists) Kendrick has me excited as hell for whatever’s next.

3. Big KRIT - Live from the Underground 3 points
Seems like everyone wanted something very specific from this album, and almost nobody got it. So I guess Im just lucky in that the album delivered everything I wanted from Krit. I listened to this album a lot trying to understand it’s critics. Is it the production? Naw, the production is fantastic. Whether the ATLiens throwback of the title track or the riding around on a sunny day “cool to be southern”. Then it must be the lyrics. Hmm he’s not saying anything he hasn’t from the beginning, so why is an issue now? In fact his flow and delivery continues to improve and is better than ever. The hooks? None of the hooks are so atrocious it makes me want to deafen myself the way a lot of rap hook do. Fuck it, guess I’m just lucky.

#1 Kendrick Lamar || good kid, m.A.A.d city; 4 points
I'mma get on my hipster shit for a second and say I listened to this genius before he made it. Been cheering for him since I heard his self-titled EP and just waiting for him to break out ever since. The fate of present day hip-hop rested on his shoulders, and while that's mighty hyperbolic, he delivered. So good that I bought two copies to support the guy, he didn't "let hip-hop die on october 22nd," and in the process gave us fuck what you heard, an instant classic.

#2 Ab-Soul || Control System; 3 points
For the longest time I thought Soul was the weakest of the four. I know, blasphemy. But this album really brought him into his own. Spitting just the right amount of paranoia, Soul had me captivated from beginning to end.

#3 Schoolboy Q || Habits & Contradictions; 3 points
"Y'all actin' like that TDE don't run L.A
Coast ain't been this hard since Pac, Death Row, and Dr. Dre"
'Nuff said, Q gave us an album worthy of a top three, maybe top two spot.

#4 Joey Bada$$ || 1999; 2 points
Out of fuckin nowehere, Joey gave us a solid mixtape with a sound that really brought you back to the golden age.

#5 Curren$Y and Harry Fraud || Cigarette Boats; 2 points
I'll be completely honest. I heard this for the first time on new years eve. Can't believe I slept on this. Lyrically it's good, but the production puts it on a whole, nother, level.

#6 NaS || Life is Good; 2 points
It feels weird to put a NaS album at a spot like number six, but don't let that fool you. Life is Good was a return to form of sorts that proved Nasir could still hold his own against today's "heavyweights". While this album definitely had it's highs and lows, it's still worthy of a spot on this list.

#7 G.O.O.D. Music || Cruel Summer; 1 point
I told myself I wouldn't put this album on this list. Nothing against the individual members, it's just that this album didn't stand out to me as a whole. But then I started looking at songs individually and I just couldn't justify omitting it.

#8 Mickey Factz || Mickey MauSe; 1 point
Kind of an off the board pick perhaps; always been a fan of Mickey's material, and this mixtape was no different. A concept mixtape, and perhaps his best in recent memory, Mickey MauSe still garners frequent playtime.

#9 Big K.R.I.T. || Live from the Underground; 1 point
Siddx said it best a couple posts up, but people didn't fuck with this album for the weirdest reasons. Perhaps they wanted something different, but personally I enjoyed the end product, and was happy to give this guy my money.

#10 PRO ERA || PEEP: The aPROcalypse; 1 point
Weird putting two albums from someone I had no clue existed until this year. Continuing where 1999 left off, Joey Bada$$ and the rest of the PRO ERA crew deliver another smooth sounding product overshadowed by the untimely death of Capital Steez. RIP.

1. GKMC Kendrick Lamar - A fine mix of West Coast sensibilities with a sound that takes me back to ATLiens/Aquemini and a storied delivery of a more digestible Devin The Dude, this was truely my biggest surprise. Each track was more than just your average hip hop jawn as it really felt like a movie in music form. From track one to the end I was hooked and couldn't get enough and love how at face value his music could make your head bob but beneath the surface the lyrics packed weight with measuered delivery.

2. RAP music Killer Mike - One of the most slept on when not being discussed in mainstream music, this album was another solid entry into the KM catalouge and one I see alot of you liked as well.

3. Greatest Story Never Told chapter 2 Saigon - This man doesn't get enough love here, and for being a New York rapper who uses his life story and awareness to change the hip hop mold I would figure he would be a bit more of a big deal. He's like a more street lupe without the pretense, and his album really breaks from the "ratchet" and average lines many seem to stick to for success.

4.GMCS - While the not everything was perfect, the posse cuts were what hit me. Who knew Pusha 2Chainz Ye and Big Sean could come together and make wonderful tracks that don't comprimise their personal styles? I just wish we got more cyhi and cudi and less Teayona. Like wayyyy less.

5. F&L 2 Lupe - I had my reservations after much of the bullshit this guy was pulling, selling, and what not since the lasers Fiasco(hmmm) but the album isn't that bad. Not his best but not an abortion by any means.

6. Life is Good Nas - A great old school feeling Nas album that I had on spin for weeks. Nas shows he still got it and at a time when many older artists are going to the well of what's hot instead of improving what made them great, Nas keeps it funky and I like that.

7.MIC Tyson Sean Price - It's Sean P I ain't gotta explain shit.

8. The final Adventure Murs & 9th Wonder - As a fan of 9th and many of his Justus League team ups I was kinda sad he and Murs made a last hurrah album together. Murs and 9th have made magic a few times, and this album shows that they really do compliment each other well when it comes to making great music.

9. VLaDR Big Boi - Big boi was never a slouch and never will be. Album was great but I'm still bummed Andre could throw everyone in the game, even the Gorillaz, sick ass lines but not his old friend. It doesn't hurt the album but just breaks my heart.

10. Sorry to Bother you The Coup - I just love this groups energy so much. Plus clever word play and rock rap music makes me happy.
