Fighting Games Weekly | January 7-13 | All Eyez on Mr. Wizard

I get the feeling Injustice will be embarrassing, however I'd be glad if someone could alleviate that feeling.

You consistently go out of your way to shit on anything related to NRS, so I don't know what anyone could say that would make you feel differently.

I don't like Mortal Kombat, but that's not true. Maybe you are confusing me with someone else. My main problem with Injustice isn't in Mortal Kombat. Heavy stage influence, long in-fight cutscenes, etc.

EVO game prediction...

AE (main game)
UMVC3
TTT2
KOF
SFxTK
Either Injustice or Sony Smash (both companies will be offering dat moneyhat)

Marvel as a main game/headliner makes no sense. SF has the most worldwide appeal and the largest amount of entries every year.

Marvel Evo headliner

Agreed, watching Marvel at Evo isn't much different from watching it at most other US tournaments that take place during the year. Same players mostly.

Since Street Fighter's at IPL, and another Capcom tournament this year, I imagine lots of people will try and step it up as well, so hopefully it doesn't look as bad as last year.
The 25th anniversary might be a good indication of the hype it can bring.

Marvel = football (American)

Street Fighter = football (worldwide)

Anyone have a link for this "legendary" Sanford rant/popoff @ The House of Crack last night? Of all the things for me to miss because I lost internet connection for a bit last night/this morning...

Haven't gotten to the meat of that rant yet, but hoooooly shit Sanford going after Alukard was amazing. :lol :lol :lol

lookin forward to Infiltration taking Marvel at EVO...

Easily the most exciting thing that could happen would be for Korea to invade America's Game™.

It makes sense because it's fair to say that the hype for AE2012 is already dying. Having AE after UMvC3 will only make it look worse.

UMVC is only more hype/popular in the USA. EVO is a worldwide tournament, which is why I expect AE to be the main game. There is no doubt that SF will have the most entries yet again, another reason why I see it being the headliner game.

Real talk, SFxT had its chance at being an EVO game. There was a ton of fighters that came out last year that could take its place
But are the paychecks/moneyhats there to convince Wizard? That is where the problem lies for the other fighters.

I don't know how some of you don't see how international Marvel has become. We're far removed from it being American-only affair, though America does still have the best players because of the history there. This Evo is gonna be Marvel's coming out party as a truly international game, imo.

I don't really pay attention to Marvel but don't a lot of the international players get worked when they show up to play? I know some gimmicks manage to work in their favor (like dude that played MODOK at last EVO...can't remember his name) but are they actually able to compete on the same skill level as the Americans?

I doubt the number of games will be changed much from 2012. It certainly won't increase; last year had a packed schedule and there was much resistance against adding a Day 4. Don't think it'll decrease due to increased attendance.

Probably make the most sense to look at what from 2012 will get replaced.
SCV <> TTT2 for sure
SFxT <> PSASBR possible
KOF <> P4A or DOA possible. KOF is gone for sure though
Did they announce US release dates for Injustice and BBCP yet? That'd be the most important determining factor for if those games get main stage at EVO. If SF2 Tournament of Legends was a Day 3 event that's another slot freed up too.
Phantasma is definitely farther away than Injustice. No way that is happening at all unless ASW has wizards making deals for EVO.
Does Smash run well on Dolphin?
Dolphin needs really powerful PCs to run well.

True, most Japanese players play lower tiered chars/teams that can put on a show, but can't compete at a top 8 level. I see them playing it more for fun than anything else.

There were internationals in top 16 last year aside from MODOK dude. With more internationals coming for Marvel this year, I suspect there'll be more placing higher. I think the best international players can compete on the level of America's B-tier (meaning, everyone that's not Champ, Chris G, Jwong, and a few others), but I don't know that they can compete with the A-tier, no. Then again, it is Marvel.

I don't know why the headliner has to be a game where internationals are favored, anyway. The playing field isn't so slanted that the internationals can't compete.

it's basically a whole new game with the 2013 patch. i think capcom could do a better job at making people aware of this, it needs something added to the name like SFxT X or 2013

I'm not saying the headliner has favor internationals. I'm just saying it should be the most popular game. With AE getting into IPL, having the most EVO entries, and generally being the more popular game worldwide it makes sense to have AE be the headliner.

IMO they just lack experience. The American community is so tight knit. People play each other all the time, cross-country. Quite literally all the time. Every week someone has a shot at playing the best in the world, tech innovators and vets of the franchise and adapting, and that allows those that are at the top to counter adapt.

Honestly, it's hard to call something a gimmick in Marvel, because the team matters so much and so does the player behind it. Consider NerdJosh and Omniscythe playing Chris G's current team months ago, but not making nearly the buzz or effectiveness that Chris G is with it. You can have the greatest MorriDoom theory counter team in the world but if you've never played dude, you probably won't get very far (look at Moons), which is what makes those international players doing so well so impressive. I think if Alioune, Zak Bennett and Frieda played with Americans often you would see even faster evolution of the metagame and even more threats added to the pool of Marvel killers.

My dream Marvel match is still MarlinPie vs. Kusoru, though I find it saddening Kusoru probably won't visit the US again anytime soon.

Yup, Phantasma has no console release date at the moment.
My bet is it'll come out around May-June, but without any solid release date now, there's no chance it'll make EVO.

I also don't believe Marvel is gonna be the main game; sure the hype for AE is dying, but the game continues to show how crazy it can get when all the best players meet in a tournament (Topanga / 25th anniversary). Marvel is not "international" yet at all: here in Europe AE is still the main thing, and last time I went in Japan (last October) it seemed AE was getting shadowed by the BB/GG come-back hype.

My bet:

AE (main game)
uMVC3
SFxT
TTT2
Injustice (bleh)
P4A (I wish! But I have a suspicion the game won't make it, even though it deserves to)

KOF13 returning to EVO would be quite a shock to me.
But you never know. ^^

Marvel doesn't need to be called the headliner to headline EVO. There's no question what game the most people want to watch and has the most hype.
