Netflix launches 'Super HD' and 3D streaming - for certain ISPs

No mention at all of the 3DS. I remember them saying it would be compatible with their 3D service when the 3DS app launched last year.

I approve of Netflix's Super HD and 3D initiatives, but...

They need to worry about getting more content instead of 3D.

...this...

Time Warner will probably be the last to jump in on this as usual with anything.

...and this.

Why the fuck would this not work on Windows 7? Makes no damn sense.

I was wondering the same thing. My living room HTPC (w/ XBMC) is a Windows 7 box.

I don't understand how Virgin Media is on the list when Youtube in 480p doesn't even work without buffering for me.

indeed, last i saw they didn't even offer access to espn 3 online so i'm sure they aren't even bothering with netflix.

They've had espn 3 access for a while now but yeah when I read "for certain ISPs" I instantly knew Time Warner wasn't going to be on that list.

Wonder if my ISP is one of the chosen few... *looks*

The fact that certain things like ESPN3 and Netflix Super HD only work on certain providers and on certain OS configuration is all that is wrong about the way certain companies want the internet to go.

Not really disappointed about Comcast not being on the list. Even though I would definitely use this my speeds are barely enough to handle SD streaming even though I pay for the boost whatever too. Building's service is just horrible.

Quite a bit of the selection is HD. Not sure abuot 5.1/subtitles. I think the movies you were referring to were the extinct Starz line, which had awful picture/sound quality.

nah, I always knew the starz were poor quality. it was mainly the new releases that were recently in theaters were never in HD or had 5.1/subtitles. I mean they didn't get many new ones, but they occasionally did and they were always sd 2.0 audio no subs

1080P = SuperHD? trollololol

*sigh*

They had 1080p before. Must be a higher bitrate.

This.

Whats makes "super HD" super?

There is more to video quality than just the resolution. Bitrate can definitely impact image quality as well.

It's why Blu-rays at 1080p look better than 1080p streams from Netflix.

In any case, doesn't it seem funny that they change their encoding/compression thus removing the X-High option, say they now meet that quality at the High setting, but now offer "SuperHD" but it is only available to those ISP's that utilize Netflix's CDN's?

Sounds like a bunch of bullshit to me.

Nice my setup is supported (PS3+finnish ISP Sonera). Also when they started calling FullHD(1080p...) SuperHD?

EDIT: I should mention I'm from Finland so this is outside the US also.

7 Mbps or 12 for 3D? Hardly anything "super" about that.

This branding is just a move to strike deals with ISPs. There's absolutely no reason any ISP should be excluded from the higher bitrate streams.

And how about some surround sound support on PC (or Wii U)?

I thought it was odd when I turned on my PS3's Netflix app and saw a 3D category and a "Super HD" option, but it worked and looked great. They were mostly 3D documentaries but a couple of 3D movies were there, too.

My ISP is good according to the link but I had no extra options on my PS3 netflix.

Do they not have that on the PC? Shit. I was going to connect my new computer to the receiver and television, to give my aging PS3 a break...

Apple TV or Roku are better options than PS3.
Got tired of how loud my PS3 was during movies.

And with the Apple TV, it goes from sleep to playing a show in 5 seconds.

chances for verizon getting this?

No Fios? I was on the fence about cancelling...this kinda does my work for me.

Bummer.

I thought Fios would be a shoe in.

Surprised at Verizon Fios and Xbox 360 not making the list. Guessing both will be supported soon though.

Come the Fuck on Verizon ; ;

150Mb/75Mb connection could be used for SuperHD Goodness =/

65" 3D Panny Plasma: Check
HDMI: Check
PS3: Check
Charged 3D Glasses: Check
FiOS: Check
FiOS + Netflix:......

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!

No support for Fios :(

No love for Fios. Oh well.

To all FiOS customers ... let's do something about it!

I'll be doing it once I get home (don't remember my login off the top of my head).

Indeed they did. Well, Nintendo did anyways, in one of their press releases from last year. At least Netflix is saying that other devices will be supported in the future. I just wish we knew when.

Sweet I have everything ready to go, except Netflix.

I dont know man, I have a bluray rental delivery service, I'm already getting Super duper HD and Super Dupiest HD Sound™, not sure I can downgrade.

What is the best bitrate available on Netflix without SuperHD? I just want to see what kind of upgrade this is before signing up again. 7-12Mbps is should be relatively decent..

BT's on board? I thought they would be pushing their own internet TV service instead of making deals with Netflix (then again, Netflix isn't available for BTVision nor the new YouView boxes. They really should get on the latter, considering Sky's NowTV is already on board and certainly has the weight to squeeze Netflix out of the UK).

Just had a live chat with Charter support and they had this to say about joining Open Connect:

Charter is currently not joining the Open Connect Network. There is no notice regarding a future plan about it yet.

meh.
