Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

The Walking Dead is a visual novel, not an adventure game.

Katawa Shoujo is a better visual novel than The Walking Dead.

A completely randomized list of rants:

  • I think the Halo series is the most boring single player of any FPS game. The level design and story are horrible, period. I honestly have no idea why I keep buying new games in the series.
  • Going along the lines of point #1, I think most level designers in games these days need to go back to gaming's roots and take a good long look at the level designs of Doom 1/2, Quake 1/2/3, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, UT '99 and Golden-eye. Map design in games this generation are completely forgettable. Despite owning all three games you could show me a map from Modern Warfare 1-3 or Battlefield 3, etc. and probably would not even know the name of the map or which game in the series it game from.
  • I think the most horrible looking FPS visually looking games (Warband, Gary's Mod mods, Counter-Strike Source mods, Killing Floor, Red Orchestra) with janky coding to boot are more enjoyable than AAA shooters like Halo, Gears of War, Modern Warfare, Battlefield 3 in the multiplayer category.
  • In the single player category for FPS's, Condemned was the best this generation hands down and it was released practically at the Xbox360's launch. What is wrong with you FPS developers, you have had years to beat it!
  • I have no idea why people on this forum give two shits about the power of the WiiU. It is all about the software. A HD Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Zelda will most likely blow 99% of the games that are on Microsoft and Sony's next consoles out of the water in terms of enjoyability. Graphics are nice, but the best looking game in the visual department will not hide the fact it is a turd.
  • Going along with my Nintendo rant the music in ALL new Super Mario Brothers game blows. Please stop with the high pitched WAA voices and jumping to the music. Galaxy's music on the other hand was AMAZING. It is amazing how both soundtracks lie completely on opposite of the spectrum.
  • Like many people on here have been saying, I do not see what all the hubbub about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is. I think it is a pretty generic adventure game. Although I only played through the first one.
  • Final Fantasy is dead. Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon were the best RPGs of this generation and I find it amazing they were released on the Xbox360 early in its life and nothing has come close to them since then.
  • I feel sorry for Vita owners. I do not know why people are holding out hope for the system to have a great selection of future games.
  • I secretly hold out hope that point & click adventure games will enter a golden era like the the Lucas Arts and Sierra era of the 90's.

Oh God I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Generations notwithstanding, Persona 4 came out in 2008 and is much better than those two 360 RPGs you mention. Good enough that Golden was worth buying a Vita for, at least a Vita that only cost $150 after selling all the bonus codes Amazon bundled it with.

The Vita is a walking zombie, nuff said. That this forum acts like there's any hope for this paper weight shows how out of touch they are. Buy an IOS or Android device and welcome to a healthy gaming scene. The Vita...its dead Jim.

- I imagine that some are playing along for the online camaraderie, though it would be comforting to see more folks confirm that they are in on the Vanquish/Platinum Games are special movement just for the ride. Fun, hell yes, though the push for extraordinary comes off as forced as the everything EA/Bioware does is the devil. And Kamiya's tweets are overrated [do you eat shit is especially a one-use throwaway that would have been fuel for protest if Phil Fish had said it]

- The Valve/Steam/Gabe blind devotion isn't much less fanatical than the Apple. It would be fun to attribute things that Gabe said to others not as iconic and vice versa and note the difference in reaction. Windows 8 is unusable would be a great place to start. Not capable of being used.

- Why the constant need to declare yourself a PC Gamer? Gamer no longer sums it up clearly enough? I rarely see handheld/console/iOS/android enthusiasts as eager to say hey, look at me, the way I do it requires specification. Comes off sounding as if the acceptance supersedes the act.

Gears of War was never visually impressive to me. I bought that shit launch day 2006, turned that shit back in at the end of the week.

Story was dumb
Graphics were overrated as fuck
Shooting was dumb
Art was shit

So let down by the hype train.

Next generation will be the last for consoles as we know it. The PS4, 720 and WiiU will all be barely profitable as PC and tablet/ smartphone gaming take over. The 3 will fold their primary console market and go separate ways- Nintendo will continue to make very popular handheld consoles and publish games for PC/tablets, Microsoft will simply merge their Xbox brand into the PC world, and Sony will develop a brand new 3D immersion technology for games. It will be far too expensive for most home users, which means ARCADES will make a comeback! Instead of the current PC gamers vs Console gamers vs Casual games war we have now we'll have Traditional PC gamers vs Arcade gamers vs Tablet gamers. In 10-15 years when Sonys 3D technology gets cheap enough they will once again enter the home console market and restart it like Nintendo did with the NES.

Battlefield 3 MP is the best online shooter to ever exist on consoles.

Ocarina of Time is much better than ALTTP.

I never got the AWESOME GRAFFIX after 2, but when GoW 1 came out in 2006 it was literally the best looking thing yet. It was the first game to make me feel like I was really playing a next generation game.

I wish more people had the balls to admit that the best XBLA/PSN games are better than some of the best retail titles.

Because they are.

Most of todays downloadable titles would now be worshipped as "all time classics" had they released in the 90's.

Shame that will never happen.

I want Nintendo to stop making consoles, focus their entire hardware budget on their handhelds, and make multiplat console games.

How about some opinions that are actually controversial?

Having quick saves ruins action games. All action games should have checkpoint saves only.

All games should have a heavily compressed audio mix because most people are playing on crappy TV or small computer speakers at low volumes.

People who are dismissive of motion control are shortsighted.

Yup, these are authentically controversial compared to what seems to be the common, everyday opinions on GAF these days. I've no beef with people expressing opinions, but to be honest much of the stuff posted as controversial opinions in this thread are just folks saying "I don't like this, therefore it sucks" if you boil things down.

I have to admit I don't quite see the point in your view about audio mixes.

I agree quick save isn't appropriate for tons of games which people would demand it in.

Also agree that dismissing motion controls as is common among enthusiast game fans is shortsighted.

You probably know what I meant, but just to be sure, I meant compressed as in all sounds being approximately the same volume. i.e. gunshots being as loud as dialog.

Just thought of another one. Diminishing returns are real and the next consoles will be perceived as barely an improvement visually over the current gen even if the hardware is massively more powerful. Not as perceived by the enthusiasts, but by the average person.

That Microsoft isn't destroying/hasn't destroyed gaming.

The way a lot of people talk around here they're the root of all evil and only bad things have happened since they joined the industry.

Oblivion was better than Skyrim.

Skyrim is technically a better game (graphics, combat, the world design). But I for the life of me could not get into the game. The missions weren't as interesting and fun (see Dark Brotherhood or Thieves Guild) - and I just found myself bored to tears. I know Oblivion has aged poorly, but I much more enjoyed that game.

Although I admit, I'm unsure if that's really a controversial opinion. And I did come very late to this thread. This is probably DOA.

I definitely wouldn't be opposed to games having DRC as an option, or perhaps even a system wide option on the next consoles. I've got an Amp so I can deal with that but many other people can't. Good idea Tmdean.

Ocarina of Time is overrated or perhaps just hasn't aged well. I played it for the first time on 3DS last year and found it extremely boring.

Metroid Prime is the pinnacle of Nintendo's achievement.

Left4Dead is really, really boring, as is Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV, and Minecraft.

Sonic Unleashed (HD version) is superior to Sonic Colors.

Sonic 06 was GOTY 2006...OK just kidding. it really was terrible.

The original Metroid is virtually unplayable trash.

Super Metroid is just as good as everyone says it is.

Half-Life 2 is severely overrated, and is merely decent.

nintendo is the most forward thinking company and has the greatest long-term strategy in the entire gaming industry.

valve is the only one even close, and i question that one sometimes

I never said it had the largest active community, i said it was the best online shooter ever made.

If it is the best it will have the numbers to back it up. I'm not saying One Direction is the best or anything but MAG is free to play aswell. No one plays it because its simply not the best, it's trash. I guess opinions are like assholes (everyone has one)

I agree with those ones. Metroid Prime is also really overrated, though. Not even in my top 15 nintendo games, probably.

Edit : Huh, I think I'm going to make a Top 15 Nintendo games list now. brb

I loved Uncharted 2...but 3 just fucking sucked.

I still can't muster up the willpower to like the Wii U.

Besides the original Halo, all the games in the series are boring as hell.

Left 4 Dead is only an okay game. It gets boring quick.

Super Mario Bros 1 is a bad game with bad level design and bad controls.

Resident Evil is a poor game with awful camera, awful combat, and awful gameplay where you push statues around to get gem to open door to get gems to push statues to open a door to get a key to open a door to get a key to get a gem to push a statue to get a key.

Final Fantasy 1,2,3,4 are not really good at all, with low customization and no decision making at all.

How does anyone over 12 years old still play or follow Pokemon?

it's one of those things that are targeted for everyone. it's simple enough at first glance to please children yet complicated enough to satisfy adults. see: adventure time, Pixar movies, theme parks, or a trillion other things

Okay, made my Top 15 Nintendo Games list. Nothing too controversial, I guess.

1. Yoshi's Island
2. Zelda: Link to the Past
3. Zelda: Link's Awakening
4. Advance Wars
5. Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 (I can't seperate them!)
6. Metroid Zero Mission
7. Super Mario World
8. The Legend of Zelda
9. Super Mario Bros. 3
10. Mario Kart DS
11. Super Mario 64
12. Pokemon (can't decide which version)
13. Starfox 64
14. Tetris Attack
15. Elite Beat Agents

Controversial things to note! No 3D Zeldas listed, cause I think 3D Zelda is pretty awful. And despite what I said before, Metroid Prime almost made the cut. And it's weird, I consider myself a huge Metroid fan, but I realized I really just love Zero Mission, haha. I've played and enjoyed Metroid II and Fusion, but they weren't good enough to make the list.

Also, F-Zero GX would have been #6, but I wasn't sure how involved Nintendo actually was in making it, so I left it out.

Halo 4 is bad.
90% of HaloGAF would agree with you. The Halo franchise is without a doubt my favorite gaming franchise, and I'm just so utterly disappointed in Halo 4. It added only a handful of minor improvements, but removed or fucked up so many other key elements. I could (and have) rant about this forever, but if you've stepped foot in the Halo OT since the game came out, you've already heard it all before.

You and me both.

Ah, had no idea. Figures the players and the fans would differ from the press on this.

"Sony games are all style and no substance, except for the studio that does nothing but produce super artsy shallow games."

When I first read his post, I thought he was talking about Ico/SotC until I finished the line

Edit: Oops, thought I was on the most recent page, kind of an old post to quote, oh well

THis generation will end too soon. Next-generation systems shouldn't come out before 2015 as any new consoles out coming out now will fail.

The Vita is the best hardware packet SCE ever launched.

You've never played MAG.
MAG sucks and is a sorry excuse for a shooter. I even tried it with Move controls, adjusted my settings to what people in the MAG thread recommended, and gave it multiple attempts. Game sucks.

The campaign is the definition of style over substance. The story was also abysmal.

Persona 4 has great and unique music and some flashy ui design, but other than that it's just scoobie doo in a fairly insufferable teenage highschool setting with extremely extremely tedious 'dungeon crawling' (don't know what else to call it).

Walking through those dungeons in search for mobs bored me to tears, I tried for a long time to get into the game (I really can't remember if it was 15 or more hours) but I just couldn't stomach the tedium anymore once the formula of the storytelling and daily routine got tedious too.

My rant: mass effect 1 is bad in almost every sense.
-AI is one of the worst in gaming
-image quality (no AA support)
-self shadowing broken? Let's remove it in a patch and call it a fix.
-awful textures, awful animations, the uncanny valley is going to sue for making it look bad.
-gunplay (you do a lot of shooting, gameplay matters, it is awful)
-poor pacing, very poor storytelling, very poor character exposition (lack thereof) this is some B grade shit.
-UI is embarrasing, so so so bad
-mako planets 5 minutes in UDK terrain tool, too lazy to even use the smoothen tool. the same 3 (literally) mini dungeons repeated over and over, and STILL the AI is broken and gets stuck on everything (even on nothing) in each one.
-I already played kotor ten years ago, it didn't age well, no need to reskin it over and over and over bioware.

It's a cynical formulaic game that is a powerfantasy aimed at american teenagers. Its success will never stop to baffle me. I can understand cod even though I hate it, but this?

Ive never played Half Life (any of them), because the first hour or so of the original was pretty boring. Probably should try it again though, now that im older.
