Netflix launches 'Super HD' and 3D streaming - for certain ISPs

No SuperHD here (Tele2, Sweden). Oh well, the regular HD already looks pretty good for me.

And this clearly has nothing to do with bandwidth or anything like that. I'm on an uncapped 100 Mbps connection, and could upgrade that to 250 or even 1000 Mbps if I wanted to (don't see the point though), so my ISP definitely has the bandwith. Guess they're just not connected to Netflix's Open Connect network thingy.
 
Nope. Charter in Madison WI. Well at least I can go with another provider around here that does support it. Yay competition!

Your Internet Provider is part of the Open Connect network, a free partnership with Netflix. Netflix will automatically play movies and TV shows in Super HD on a supported device if your connection is fast enough.

EPB Fiber. My local power board's internet. First 1gig/1gig provider in the states($350) if you desire it. Yeahhhhhh suckaaassss

I don't think any one of us, wants to wait on the phone for 15 minutes, just to get someone on the line, and have that person not have a damn clue what 'open CDN' is.

My provider's on board (Rogers in Canada). Of course, that makes perfect sense. I'm sure they're absolutely giddy at how much they're going to make in bandwidth overage fees with the shit limits they have.
 
I'm all for higher bitrates but Super HD is just as shady as US mobile providers coining HSPA+ as 4G. Considering most blurays will have bitrates anywhere from the teens to the 30 Mbps they should have just announced that they were upping the bitrate of their highest quality streams instead of coming up with some disengious marketing terms

No way this ever comes to AT&T at least until they do away with their wimpy DSL. 3Mbps isn't going to cut it. This isn't 2003 anymore.
 
Weird....I've felt like I have streamed Netflix via my PS3 in 1080p before. My TV always informs me when it switches resolutions, and I swear I've seen it switch to 1080p on Netflix. I have FiOS.
 
Holy crap, what a surprise! Just booted up Netflix on PS3 and saw all the Super HD banners. I can't believe Cablevision is in on day 1. When was the last time that happened? lol

Complain to the cable company, man! They'll fix it if you raise a stink. I've had companies run brand new drops to my apartments when the existing line sucked, very little effort expended on my end.

But yeah, as a fellow Comcast owner, the thought of them even considering participating is...laughable. :/

Sadly they've come twice to "fix" it, both times ultimately to no effect. By now I'm mostly resigned to just knowing I'll have to move to get a decent connection at home. Their phone support is brutal too. Takes like 20m on hold and 30m of talking to even get to square one.
 
What's weird is my no name DSL ISP is on Open Connect and so supports SuperHD. To put things in perspective I get just as good down on this DSL as I got in my old place on FiOS (up isn't quite as good though). Maybe FiOS was just unusually bad at my old place though.

Funnily though my ISP is leaving the consumer ISP business and is no longer accepting new consumer customers - though they're not kicking any existing consumer customers off. I have a feeling they just piggy back on Verizon DSL though - similar to a cellular mvno (not sure what term is used for this relationship on wired network infrastructure) so it would be funny if Verizon DSL supported it but not FiOS.
 
Just tried it on my PS3 and honestly I don't really see the difference between superhd and regular HD on the service on my 50' 1080p TV. Guess it's a nice selling point for them.

It seems they marked a lot of stuff superhd, without it actually beimg superhd. The finnish netflix for example shows stargate series as superhd, but atleast season 5 episodes are sd still. I am not sure, but I think x-high/hd quality might be part of the new superhd on ps3, atleast blue mountain state looks so much better than on my pc.

So are these just the old x-high streams...?

Yea, you just have to click the display button to see if it's in x-high/HD and the ones I tried had that status.

Do they actively throttle Netflix traffic? I used up my free trial last year and couldn't even get any HD content to stream above 480p even though, like you, my connection was always maxed out doing anything else and it was the reason I ultimately didn't pursue a Netflix subscription. Damned shitty ISP regardless.
 
I don't see the 3D option on Wii U, anyone else with this problem? Maybe the app will be updated soon? I do see the Super HD logo though.

That's not what happened exactly. They changed their encoding/decoding. While the current ones don't show up as x-high (since they use a lower bitrate), they look pretty similar to the old x-high.


The new 'Super HD' should look significantly better than the old x-high. It's using a notably higher bitrate and better encoding.

I am on Bright house here in florida, I am fairly sure that we will get it sooner than later.
Looking forward to it, though I still am a blu ray collecting whore it is nice to stream things when you are only marginally interested in them as well as tv and other things.

There is more to video quality than just the resolution. Bitrate can definitely impact image quality as well.

It's why Blu-rays at 1080p look better than 1080p streams from Netflix.


In any case, doesn't it seem funny that they change their encoding/compression thus removing the X-High option, say they now meet that quality at the High setting, but now offer "SuperHD" but it is only available to those ISP's that utilize Netflix's CDN's?

The bitrate encoding seems to have degraded after they took down X-High & now they are rolling out Super HD, but only for a select few.
 
I emailed Time Warner/Road Runner. I got a response that they noted it and the request is being escalated to management.

Probably worth a shot folks.

Netflix isn't taking anything away, they're simply unable to provide due to your ISP not following Netflix's rules.

Thank God my ISP is sensible and adheres to standards.
