Fire Emblem: Awakening - Character Spotlights

Stahl seems like a weird choice for a name for that character since it seems like it disregards the relationship the character's name had with Sully's Japanese name. I was honestly expecting them to go with a name like Sort or Set, rather than a German word meaning steel.

The ad sometimes also has

this is sweet

in between "this is death" and "this is fire emblem". It then shows a fire emblem character who has lollipops or something in his shirt pocket. Kinda random lol

Haha, that is pretty funny given the character. Sweet tooth Gaia.

So as someone who has never played a Fire Emblem game, would I be horribly, horribly lost on the story or anything if I tried this one?

No. Please play this game!

Are those 3D models in the cutscenes? Totally looks that way.

The game looks excellent and has me wanting an XL. Maybe I should have picked one up during the holiday sales.

I feel the same way; I was totally banking on a later release and an announcement of any sort (coughanimalcrossingcough) of a special edition 3DSXL but with the release so imminent. I'll have to cave for a regular XL now.

There's in-engine and pre-rendered cut-scenes.

Yeah, I was referring to the latter - high quality, cel-shaded (or something that looks like it) character models. Looks achievable on today's hardware, which has my mind going places it probably shouldn't because I'll only wind up disappointed.

I'll keep an eye out for XL sales and be happy that we're getting this at all.

Honestly the cutscenes look really good
but there's so few of them, I was kind of sad. It makes sense when you consider 'MyUnit' though.

Definietly had me day-dreaming about the next console outing, though.

Well, if the in-battle models didn't look good on their own I wouldn't be interested at all in this. They're kind of impressive for what they are, based on the YouTube footage I've seen.

Sounds good. On the "Buy" list this goes.
The Fire Emblem series is made of self-contained games. Pick anyone and you should have no problem with the story. Radiant Dawn on Wii is the only one that's kinda not recommended to play without playing its predecessor (Path of Radiance on GC), but even then, all the important events from PoR are recapped at several points in RD. RD was actually the first I played, and it's now one of my favorites.

But yeah, get this game! The series definitely needs to grow more popular outside Japan!

Yeah, and I personally wouldn't recommend playing FE5 before FE4 either. I think it's rather fine on its own, but its story, while it does keep to itself for the most part, has a relatively heavy reliance on what it expects the player to know from playing FE4, including the universe outside of the Thracian peninsula. There are a ton of callbacks that are a lot better to appreciate if one played FE4 first.

DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT KEEPS THE EPIC ADVENTURE OF FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING BURNING BRIGHT

Jan. 10, 2013

Nintendo has revealed new information about Fire Emblem Awakening, launching exclusively for Nintendo 3DS on Feb. 4. The story of Fire Emblem Awakening begins in the kingdom of Ylisse and centers on Lord Chrom, the brother of Ylisse's Holy Ruler. Chrom leads the Shepherds, a band of soldiers who defend the borders of Ylisse from Plegian bandits. Players create a custom avatar and play as Chrom's right-hand man who is deeply ingrained in the main storyline. In addition to an immersive storyline, Fire Emblem Awakening keeps the adventure going with StreetPass and SpotPass functionality, as well as downloadable content available for purchase. Newly revealed information includes the following:

Downloadable Content: Maps will be available to purchase and download starting on launch day, and others will be distributed regularly. The first downloadable map will be available for free for a limited time only and will serve as an introduction to the steady weekly stream of additional maps. The additional maps will be offered at different price points. Players with a copy of Fire Emblem Awakening and a broadband Internet connection will be able to access the downloadable content through the Outrealm Gate located on the in-game world map, which will be unlocked after the player completes the fifth mission in the main story mode. The content will include additional information about new class types, skills, playable characters, maps with new storylines and special maps that let players earn more experience points, gold or other rare items.

SpotPass: In addition to content that can be purchased from within the game, Nintendo will also distribute new content via SpotPass for free. SpotPass content will be distributed in the launch time frame and will feature new maps with new storylines, characters and items.

StreetPass: Fire Emblem Awakening players can set up a StreetPass Team and exchange certain game data with other players. The StreetPass Team is made up of 10 units from an existing team in story mode. Players can also edit team names and create custom messages for other players to see. StreetPass characters will randomly appear on the world map, giving players the option to recruit the team leader with gold, buy any weapons or items the team is carrying or battle and win to recruit the leader for free. Like the random battles in the main story mode, the player will have full control of battles in StreetPass mode. Players will also earn "renown" based on battles won. A players' "renown" is visible to other players through StreetPass.

Fans can also try out Fire Emblem Awakening prior to launch by downloading the free demo available in the Nintendo eShop. The demo will be available on Jan. 17. When the game launches on Feb. 4, shoppers can purchase the packaged game as usual at retail locations nationwide. Or they can simply purchase and download the game on their own from the Nintendo eShop using a wireless broadband connection. Regardless of their purchasing method, the game sells for a suggested retail price of $39.99. For more information about Fire Emblem Awakening, visit http://fireemblem.nintendo.com/.

Demo coming next week.

I don't think I've played a FE game before (assuming that I can't recall means I haven't), so I'm gonna try this one since my 3DS has been sitting around cold since I got done with Code of Princess.

I like the look of Sully, save for the toilet bowl helmet thing.

This is the game where your dudes can perma die like in Xcom right?

I just... I just can't do it. Especially in a RPG(?). All that time and effort...

Guess I'll wait for a price drop then.

Edit: I really hope they make the DLC a better deal for us, because if they following the Japanese pricing it's going to cost $70+(!) for all of it. Goddamn, I didn't know it was that bad.

Well, even if the game is free (which given Nintendo-style pricing, it'll take ages before it hits sub $30, let alone sub $20), that probably wouldn't off-set the pricing that much.

And even then, I wouldn't think one would need to get all the DLC for a game like this. Sure, ones can get DLC characters that they like (Lyn, Roy, Ephiriam), but how many people are going to throw down money for people like Leaf?

It doesn't. It's in the timeline/world with FE1 and 3, but still stand-alone.

This is spoiler territory, but
I think I remember reading that there are definitely some references to the laguz, and FE Awakening actually confirms that every FE with the exception of one of them (I don't remember if it was Sacred Stones or not) takes place in the same universe. But I guess we'll see.

No exceptions.

You can disable permadeath, but it's probably limited to easy/normal mode.

Disabling the permadeath is the Casual Mode, which can be set on any difficulty setting.

There will be a 3DS XL FE bundle?!

Nintendo never announced one, so probably not.

Oh, nice, a demo. Can't wait to try it.

Did the Japanese release ever get a demo?

No.

Some of the character names from the Nintendo Press Room site for the English version.

サイリ/Sairi - Say'ri
ベルベット/Berubetto/Velvet - Panne
ロンクー/Ronkuu - Lon'qu

The character with the default name Mark in the Japanese version shows with the name Morgan.

Anyone have a good wallpaper for the game featuring the characters? I tried looking online but I can only find a few.

The cast of characters sounds really interesting! I haven't played a FE game since the original GBA one so I can't wait.

So Yoshi, are the dlc or spotpass maps done with your current team or like 12's pre-set teams.

Hope it has maps like those in 12, the archanean chronicles and the "dlc"

You always enter a battle prep screen to choose who you want to bring with you on any map, including SpotPass and DLC, I don't think it's ever done like in FE12.

I believe that a supporting unit only gains experience if they Dual Attack (killing an enemy through Dual Attacking doesn't net the supporting unit the additional experience you'd normally get either, so it's always a relatively small amount more or less), and because that happens randomly, it's not as ideal for efficiently leveling up a particular unit as having them set as the main unit or keeping them alone altogether.

I'm unsure if you can have a unit heal someone else who's Paired Up with them. If it's actually the case, I've never heard or seen it before. Supposing it is true, though, it would indeed mean that the healer would need to be the main unit to heal somebody, but in theory you could switch them back to the supporting role with the other unit afterwards if you haven't used the other unit's turn yet. I know that switching can be done as many times as desired as long as turns aren't used up, so I want to say that should work in case staff healing can be done within a Pair Up.

The Pair Up and Dual systems are very important to the game. They really make the game a lot more interesting and I think you'll find yourself using it whenever you can. You'll especially need them if you want to tackle the game's harder challenges.

One more very useful thing about Pair Up: the unit that is getting paired up gets stat boosts depending on who they're paired up with. For example, pairing up with a knight will give you a few more points of defence, a warrior will grant attack, while cavaliers grant a mix of all the physical-related stats. Furthermore, this stat bonus increases if the two units have high support levels. In my game My Unit had an S support with Chrom, and they were granting each other at least 8 points PER STAT.

Oh yeah, I did forget about the stat boosts, but I don't believe I was aware about the stat boosts depending on unit classes. That's really neat.

*blink*

Is the game difficult and make the use of such bonuses mandatory ? Because that sounds a little broken.

Also, thank you very much for the wallpaper !

The game can get hard enough that you'll need more than just those bonuses to win.

Next is the newly introduced character creation screen which lets you choose your character's gender and other defining features, which is sort of especially neat given that this 3D model translates into a 2D model as well. You can even change the voice. Cutscenes are fully voiced, while text sections and battles have bits of spoken dialogue. The Japanese voice track is available in addition to English.
The fuck?!

Who the hell is this company and what did they do to Nintendo?!

If you lose a character during one of those DLC mission, is he gone forever?

Standard story characters? Yes. DLC and Spotpass characters can be recovered by playing the DLC chapter or summoning the Spotpass team again, but that means they'll return to their initial levels and stats.
