EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

There are enough great DOA players to put on a show. Why is it so significant for a fighting game to have a 'community'? It's getting a little pretentious.

I tried watching a smash tournament on Twitch some time last year, I don't know much about the game so I thought it would be a good chance to see some high level matches and learn about it. I did not enjoy that.

Yes it's not finished just like Dive Kick, they both had tourneys and did well for themselves.

So because it's MLP and people will mock/shun it, it should not be given a fair shot really now.

Because community is the reason to play fighting games competitively? Because it's stupid to throw tournaments that nobody will show up for? Because having people to play is the reason to play fighting games competitively?

There's nothing pretentious about having a community. That's a really silly thing to say. I don't understand what could be perceived as pretentious about it.

Sometimes I think many have trouble separating "clique" from community. Seen too many remarks about communities being pretentious groups of cool people who think they're better than you.

Community is just a random collection of people who are gathered for a single common interest. Bloody hell, most of the time half the people in a community can't stand the other half.

Exactly. The common interest in this case is Tournaments, and the community at large has no interest in making it to tournaments. FSD is full of infighting about what's wrong with DoA5, whether or not online play is good, and egos typical of the FGC.

It wouldn't and should not be at EVO. The community wouldn't show and the game isn't good enough to be there, imo. That being said, if DoA5 was at EVO, I would enter immediately.
 
I hope MLP wins just to see the meldowns. Hell, salt is already flowing, delicious.

Anyway that's not even the biggest mistake. Where the fuck is Catherine?! I'd tune in to watch that game.

I don't know if it's just down to the presentation the Smash community can afford/manage or the game itself, but almost every stream I've seen of the game is awful. They really do want this, they're hungry for it, and so that's why I voted for them in the end.

RE: MLP meltdowns - I hope it doesn't win for precisely this reason, really. Evo is the one time that a significant number of additional eyes fall on the FGC, a community that deserves massive growth and more money injected into it. I think people melting down combined with a fan game in a pre-release state getting in may well just serve to make the FGC look stupid.

The fighting game community is voting for an unfinished fan made game based on the popularity of it's licensed cartoon characters, and DOA isn't worthy because of it's community? See, the whole thing is silly.

Because the point of the fighting game community isn't to watch good players, it's getting people to play. The whole spectacle side is something more recent. Before 2008 pretty much everybody that wanted to watch fighting game players were people that entered tournaments. Numbers don't really matter, just dedication. Rotanibor puts on Vampire Savior side tournaments at EVO, and I'm pretty sure it's because he wants to get VS players together, not just have insane hype moments.

I don't care about MLP. I don't know anything about it. I won't comment on that. I do, however, know a lot about DoA and its community.

DoA isn't worthy because the community WILL NOT SHOW UP. I don't see how that is silly.

Just my opinion. Not jumping to conclusions. If it's there, I'll enter. I just don't think it will or should be. It's not jumping to conclusions to say the community doesn't show to tourneys since that is empirically the case.

DOA5 players don't even show up at majors consistently. One major will be fine then the next 2-3 would be like 50 people at tops.

The FGC is a collection of people interested in fighting games. EVO was on DVD before 2008 (as early as 2002 iirc). Who was watching that?

I agree but, it can also go the other way:
- The game could be good and ready for the tournament.
- Bronies are, among many things, quite enthusiastic about their stuff. I trust they will show up in proper numbers.
- Could bring a lot of attention and maybe even money to the FGC.
- May inspire and even open the doors for other indie developers.

Ok, that's (way) too optimistic.

And just in case, personally, I don't want it to win this year for reasons exposed earlier. But if the other established and "committed" communities can't organize and put their money where their mouth is, to hell with them!
 
I was at NEC this year, standing in line to buy shitty hotel breakfast. MarlinPie was ahead of me in line. Some guy walks up to him and asks him to show his support for something called "MLP" that Marlin had no clue what he meant and asked him to clarify like 10 times in a row.

The bronies are in the FGC. They are among us.
 
If BBCP was out it should be in that slot but it wont be out or wont have been out for very long at that point. It's pretty much the best 2d fighter out now. But I sure as fuck can't really support an evo tournament for a game that might be out for most players only 3 months that's just stupid.

The other problem is the fact I don't really think ACR is better than AC so it's hard for me to put a vote for it :l

I never understood how Catherine was related to fighting games in the first place. It's a puzzle platformer.

That's basically what I was getting at, yeah.

If the community is as big and passionate as it should be for an evo title, they'll show it in donations. Not everyone is required to participate, others can hem and haw about it on the forums instead.

Maybe the vast majority of the DOA fan community stays on the internet, but maybe some of players who went to EVO for SF or Marvel also play DOA and enter the DOA tournament. It's a plausible scenario. That is unless the entrants in a particular game's tournament are required to be a card carrying member of that game's community.

you must not have been here for 2006 (whatever year doa4 was at EVO). Only like 50 or so DOA players actually showed up. The rest were SF players trying to snipe DOA winnings.

Also DOA5 has had one of the lowest showing consistently out of all the major release. The only games that I can think of that consistently get lower numbers are SC5, VF5, Skullgirls, Blazblue and (maybe) KOF13.

Isn't DOA5 on the IPL lineup and even then it had low numbers?
 
If MLP wins the drama will be endlessly entertaining. 5 months of delicious pony drama.

On the other hand, I don't see it being anything but a circus, and I'm not sure that's something I'd want Evo to potentially be associated with.
