Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

Eh I worded it badly. Wasn't supposed to sound that dickish.

Then what was the point you are trying to get across? Should Giantbomb just start posting press releases with a short paragraph before the PR? I feel that would be awful for the site in general and makes me stay away from places like Kotaku.

Has anyone actually read the latest Worth Reading? From that:

I've been continually impressed by how Polygon has managed its lengthy feature output. If I had access to a giant pile of money to throw at reporters who know how to find interesting stories, this is exactly what I would do with it.

So is Patrick Klepek admitting that he himself has no idea how to find interesting stories? I think that's exactly what he's saying. And maybe that's why GB news content is so weak.

:) I actually like GB's content. As long as it keeps coming at a semi-regular pace I don't really care what they do with all their time. My biggest issue right now is the site's performance is shit! Shit!

It wouldnt hurt if they got onto some kind of regular timetable for the premium content.

If I was paying for premium content and not just because I have a weird need to financially support a website that already has the support of a billion dollar company I would be kind of pissed.

They used to be pretty good at just putting something out on a daily basis. I hope with the redesign comes a new approach to content outer then their current "we will do it whenever" approach.

Speaking of things we want, I wish the Coming Up section listed everything mentioned on I Love Mondays, even if they don't have concrete times stamped on them, or if they had to drop 1 or 2 that week because something came up. Having to watch or rewatch a 3-8 minute video to find out what is happening this week is kind of dumb.

And, yeah, regular schedule (even if they sometime have to delay or break from it) premium stuff is needed. The "flying by the seat of their pants" approach needs some structure.

Army of writers with connections versus 5 guys with connections.

I don't think it needs structure if they just do more of it.

This I agree with.

It's a combination of me being greedy and also mental math of what the hell they're doing not adding up. They had half a staff and half a week last week and they still put out more content than this one. How does that make sense? Just pick a random pc game out of the binder for one hour and stream it, bam people are happier. If that's too much work they need to reorganize their set up.

Hahah holy shit I finally got around to watching the Dragonborn DLC. Brad spawning a dragon and the dragon just immediately flying off was hilarious

I think the problem with GB's output is that their style of content naturally aligns themselves more with the Youtuber's and Twitch streamers (who have almost zero production or business overhead) causing people to expect a similar volume of content. While at the same time, they still want to stand among the IGN/Gamespot/Polygon's in regards to events, PR connections and more traditional coverage elements in order to 'ground' themselves and not completely disappear up their own arses.

So while many viewers may want them to just turn on a camera and just go with whatever stuff they've got, they still feel the need to do their due diligence in regards to keeping connections/relationships going, booking and attending previews/events, and generally keeping up with the rest of the industry.

All that stuff ends up taking time (usually paying off with some great coverage and developer access) but also leaves some people going "OMG what on earth could they be busy with!!!".

Patrick please don't overspend on your gaming PC. Spend as much as you need to play what you want to play and upgrade further down the line. Future proofing is a fool's errand.

Over the last few weeks I've been having problems with the streaming videos on GiantBomb. I click to watch and it just sits at 00:00 / 00:00. I use Chrome and I tried FireFox with the same results. I'm not a subscriber yet.
Any ideas what's happening here, I'm desperate for some GB tonight but nothing will stream.

I'm apparently having the exact same issue. Wanted to watch some videos and when I click play they just sit there at 00:00 / 00:00.

The engineers are busy working on the new site, so they are unable to fix bugs that come up on the old one. Kind of a bummer for non-subs, but the new site should be live around the end of the month.

When they were talking about it in the past his budget was in the $800 ballpark. I'd say that's the sweet spot for a good gaming PC.

Excellent, you can get a pretty bloody good rig for that amount. At least you could a few months back, heck, it might've gotten better since then!

That's a good target. The rest of the GB staff and Tested have been prone to overspending in the past so I thought I'd take the opportunity to make sure you knew the other side of the coin.

What was that ridiculous rig that Tested built once? It was waaaay too much money for what they got.

I think Will and Norm have too much money to spend.

tons of things they recommend as reasonable prices are only slightly better than alternatives but the alternatives cost a third the price.

I remember them recommending some random doo-dad for like 100 bucks when there was a cheaper, nearly as good alternative for about 30.

There are good reasons to go all out, future proofing isn't one of them, but if you're trying to drive a very high resolution monitor or 3D or 120 Hz or you're crazy about IQ, so you want to downsample from some crazy high resolution, spending more makes sense. Obviously, those aren't the average person's requirements and require a bigger commitment than most gamers are looking for. $800 is pretty much perfect for a current rig aiming for 1080P gaming at 60Hz for the majority of games available now.

FUCK GIANT BOMB! There's only one thing for it. I subscribed at last! Hope that teaches 'em a fucking lesson in keeping their viewers happy!

Actually I've been meaning to subscribe for about a year now so it's about time. I've had well over £30 worth of entertainment before subscribing so it feels good to get full access and help fund Jeff's serious collecting habit. Tried the videos now and they play fine.

Team Vinny forever. Sorry Brad.

Guess I'll try again next month then since none of the videos load currently.

Working on doing a complete and tl;dr version of the BladeRunner game up to this point, since Dave was complaining that they wouldn't remember anything when he came back to it. Pray for me.

Wow. That's a lot of work. Hopefully, they see it and can just jump right in without wasting time trying to remember what the hell happened in the previous episodes

"I had crossed the line."
That's all they really need to know.

I'm just hoping I'll have the time to get it all done before my semester kicks off.

I just got really depressed watching the Cards Against Humanity TNT. It looked so fun, and made me want to play that game with a group of friends. Then I realized I don't have any friends anymore. Living with your parents post-college while unemployed is a depressing existence.

Sorry to bring the mood down. Just the sort of thought I had to share somewhere.

Even if it's not with friends, it's a fun game with family as well, as long as your family isn't super wound up.

Nothing wrong with getting a fun game to play with any family if you see them.

That's about what I spent a month ago, and I'm extremely pleased with the machine I ended up with. 2500k, 7870, 64gb m4 ssd, a nice motherboard, case and supporting parts. It's not bleeding edge or anything but it's played just about everything so far at 60fps/1080p as long as I don't go crazy on AA. The only game that's given it trouble is Planetside 2 when things get absolutely insane in high density hexes.

Hah, oh man I can just feel the wrath of brad's response already.

The line of thinking going on in here is so poorly informed that it's impossible to respond to, not that it deserves a response. This thread is predictable enough that you could set your watch by it.

Someone remind me to give him the 560 I just upgraded from when the time comes. Keep meaning to bring it in.

I agree that you don't need to tell people what should probably be taken for granted - that you're all doing your best, and obviously not twiddling your thumbs all day (I'd assume a lot of your time is playing games to prep for discussion). That, and it's a bit rude and weird to question what individuals accomplish at work.

That said, I think the "exclusive content every day" statement on the premium signup page should be changed. I'm pretty happy with gb's output, but it seems like a no-brainer to change a selling-point statement that's just factually incorrect. It bothers enough people to warrant altering it, I think.

This makes sense, and this is also what I felt like most people in here were saying. Not sure what misinformed thinking Brad percieved.

It seems like that was relic of the whiskey media days, so hopefully in the new site redesign it will be fixed. Sounds like a cop out by now but I think that's what will happen. Hopefully.

You should perhaps take that as an onus to better inform your fans, then?
