Rumored Chinese Forum Xbox720 specs: 8CoreCPU,8GB,HD8800GPU,W8,640GBHDD

Like the people who owned 7800's and 1900's? Better off waiting a year after the release of the next consoles before building a pc.

My 7800GT was the perfect choice back in 2006, as stated earlier it was expensive as hell but that was worth it since it ran demanding games better than the 360 and those consoles were beastly.

I doubt you are going to see a GPU like the GTX770-780 struggling to run games better than the Durango/Orbis. I don't mind being proved wrong though, it is the sign that tech is making tremendous strides.

Bring it on, my PC will be ready.

Well doesn't all info so far point to a smaller jump this time?

People said this when the first xbox game out. Then with the 360. And then the PS3. The best bang for your buck will be to wait a year after release and then build. You will probably get 3 good years out of a set up that is built a year after the consoles release versus most likely 6 months to a year that the 680 will still be good after the next gen launch. I don't see a lot of games coming out that will require people to run out and upgrade until a few months into next gen anyways.

Not enough sources willing to go on the record. We actually have pretty strict standards on the site about this kind of thing. But I've heard from enough sources to be reasonably confident about certain things, and be somewhat confident about other things. Like I've said, I'm not worried about being wrong, though I don't believe that I am.

I see. I think even without naming your sources you could write an article about it and draw a lot of attention though. Unless you can get in trouble with it of course.

Wouldn't that be considered "trolling for hits" or "linkbait" or whatever popular dismissive term is constantly thrown at us?

Im sure people on GAF would like reading about it. I always loved the rumour and speculation articles Matt Cassa at IGN did. Link baiting would be an article thats based on nothing.

Depends on how spot on you are afterwards but the way I see it you sit on information you can't reveal because you either would need to write an article with "we got the information from various anonymous developer sources" which is against your policy or "we got the information from <insert real name>" and get someone in trouble. Which means you have information which becomes worthless in a few months - don't know what you want to do with it.

I just search for Arthur's posts once every couple of weeks and I usually get my fill of next gen rumours that way :P

Sourcing is complicated, but just because we know the names of people, doesn't mean we have to tell you the names of our sources. I think a lot of would-be sources are just super terrified of being exposed, and I can understand why. It's not watergate, it's video games. It's not worth losing your job over.

Probably they will be fairly equal. Next gen will not be about raw power, it will be about software.

MS probably will have the edge in that area... but time will tell. Too early.

Compilers do a lot of the work now for you. MS has invested heavily in this so I expect very good optimizations out of the box for devs.

Huh. Would that in theory lead to more PC games down the line that use more than 4 cores, multiplatform or otherwise? (OTOH, quad cores these days are much faster than what these cores will ostensibly be, architectural differences or not.)

A lot us do love reading that stuff, even if it's proven to be wrong later. And then there's those people here who will never let him/them forget that they made a mistake (or merely passed along secondhand info). They can't win. At least not until they learn how to tune out the holier-than-thou members.

Hell would freeze over first.

Ok but can you just give us a general idea of the specs you have heard and how it is received by devs? you can just post it here without sighting anybody, just say its your guess on what the system is all about. How's that.

It already did.

No, I meant hell would have to freeze over for me to be GAF's favorite anything.

Both systems look to be very, very powerful.

But think of the tag, man, the tag !

(hey, i'm kidding)

I had a tag for like three days a couple of years back before the mods thought better of it, I guess.

GAF usually has a bone to pick when it comes to the media. No worries. Hopefully you guys can get some good coverage of the devices when they are announced. Looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts regarding how the next gen will shape up.

Let's play a game

From what you hear when comparing to cars, in terms of pure speed, the Nintendo Wii U is a:

A) JAGUAR XF R-S 5.0 V8 (186 mph)
B) TOYOTA SUPRA 3.0 TURBO (156 mph)
C) VOLKSWAGEN(VW) GOLF GT TDI 170 (137 mph)

The Playstation Orbis is a:

A) Bugatti Veyron Super Sport (267 mph)
B) Hennessey Venom GT (260 mph)
C) Zenvo ST1 (233 mph)

The Durango is a:

A) Bugatti Veyron Super Sport (267 mph)
B) Hennessey Venom GT (260 mph)
C) Zenvo ST1 (233 mph)

A proper hybrid drive isn't very good from what I've heard for everyday scenarios. Instead, something like Apple is doing with its fusion technology is much more interesting. Store the OS, saved games and cache onto the SSD. Large storage (game content downloads) goes onto the the regular HDD.

Agree with this. You don't even need a hybrid drive, just have two separate drives - a regular HDD that you can vary in size for different skus etc, and a smaller mSSD or similar to hold the OS, saves etc, and maybe enough to cache the currently playing game to speed up subsequent plays.
