Fun fact, reCAPTCHA is actually bits of old text that failed to be recognized by conventional OCR. It's basically a crowd-sourced interpretation anything ranging from Middle English to old New York Times articles. That's why some of them will let you through even when you mistype a character.

Could you explain this to me like I'm 5? I'm interested, but I don't understand what you mean.

From what I understand, what they do is have one word be legible and known, and the other word is from an old written work (article, book, scroll?, etc.) that they want to digitize. They test the first word for correctness, and then use what you think is the second word to digitize the work. Trying to figure out each word that may or may not be legible by hand would take forever, so they farm it out to you

@ The I want my hat back pictures. I know the chap who did those, he made a thread on a forum I use and posted a picture everyday to tell the story.

edit: Or hey, you know what else would be better for multiple, repeated images of the same size? An animated gif. That is what they're actually for.
