Fighting Games Weekly | January 14-20 | Debate over peaches or ponies for EVO edition

wtf? You think that shit happens every tournament? Come on, Karst, you know better than to say crap like that. :/
I hear about it happening all the time.

I don't think of the FGC as one community. Major respect to those who put on tournaments and move things. Major. But calling the FGC a community is like calling an alcoholic father that beats you and your mother part of a "family". I'm open to other interpretations, but it seems to me like there are givers like Sp00ky, and then there are leeches that show up and get what they can and just like videogames.

Now that the dust is settled I can ask this question. How was Apex? People didn't like last year's performance, but it seems like everything went by smooth for non-smash players this year.
Was about to say that but...

They are pretty free until they make this mythical PC version with Steamworks.
Damn
That doesn't explain who would steal a wii
Maybe they needed a Wii for their gamepad.

Out of curiosity, how many tournaments have you actually been to, let alone majors? Theft definitely happens, but it's usually sticks that someone wasn't paying attention to. Hardware used for the tournaments rarely goes missing like this.

I've been to one tournament. I got to play 3 times in a four hour period in a small cramped room, and folks made jokes about me being the only white guy there. It wasn't really my idea of a good time. I've been meaning to go to a Galloping Ghost Arcade event, but they run everything on the 360 and I'm a PS3-only owner for fightsticks. I might be getting a 360 stick soon, and then I'm looking forward to going out and participating. I'm going to make a trip out to GGA for my birthday (Jan 31) and just play arcade machines all day.

And fightsticks getting stolen are just the same. It shows how little of a community it is. Steal from the host, steal from your fellow players...

It really happens in every major video game event. QuakeCon, anime conventions, and the like. If there's valuable stuff left in the open, it will get jacked. The amount of douchebags out there are few compared to the attendees and people that put the events together. Hell, the smashboards are already planning to get some cash together for APEX 2014. Don't be so quick so shut down the events that have given you so much as a stream viewer.

EDIT: And go to more events, damn it. Also, a thicker skin might be good for you. One is not enough for you to go around judging so quickly, geez.

I agree that it's still bad to be stealing from each other regardless, but the hardware taken in this case is a bit different from what's common. To be real, most stolen sticks come from someone being really irresponsible with their own stuff too. I've seen sticks just abandoned for hours on a table. It's not surprising it goes missing after awhile.

I'm sorry to hear your first experience wasn't great but I do recommend making another effort. If you have a place that does weekly casuals nearby, try going there and just being friendly. People are usually pretty receptive to that.

Also what is this, the past? Get that shit dual modded son!

One of my friends was assaulted in the bathroom at GP Baltimore. (mtg) They didn't get his stuff, and they got caught. Massive theft ring was operating in the area- radically changed how people approached event security.

I'm not judging anything except for that one event. Like I said, I'm hoping to go to a GGA event because it:
1) Is more spacious.
2) Has arcade machines to play during downtime.
3) Might have another white person.

And I haven't said anything negative about the events. I just said I'm not keen on the term "community" for the fighting game scene. "Scene" is fine. The word "community", to me, means you share a lot more than a hobby. It means you look out for each other and work for each others' interests. I'm very grateful to folks like Sp00ky and FChamp for running streams for me to enjoy.

I agree, I think "scene" is a much more appropriate term for what it is, but terminology in this scene doesn't necessarily have to mean anything in order to get adopted. Or if it DOES mean anything, overuse sucks all meaning out of it.

For example, when everything is Godlike - nothing is Godlike.

Anyway, it's gonna be FGC til it crumbles at this point, regardless of whether the term "community" legitimately fits or not.

I think there is one already. But they are holding the donations in a fund to make sure there actually is an Apex 2014 before releasing it.

After spending a couple of dollars on the ios version, there is no way I'm ever purchasing any product with "fest" in the title ever again.

Any links? Would be happy to donate for this.

YOU MEAN MY MARVEL MENTOR IS WHITE?! (j/k I already knew that)
It kinda makes me uneasy when people chant out white guy whenever DJ or honzo play but I guess it's more receptive because they are normals for tournaments. But it's hell of annoying dealing with that probably.

There are plenty of fighting game communities around the world. Just like the wii stealer isn't part of the smash community, some problems in some city in America (presuming your location here) does not invalidate the whole thing.

It was really just the straw that broke the camels back. It's one thing to sit around for 4 hours and only play 3 matches. It's another thing to do it in a small room. It's another thing to do it when you're socially isolated. If I could play matches most of the time in a spacious room and get called "white boy", I'd be okay with that.

I live in Chicago. It's a huge piece of shit that I want to get out of ASAP. I'd argue that there's a community between the top + popular players because they'll do things for each other, but not the common player.

GGA only plays Mortal Kombat. The Capcom and other games are played in other venues in Chicago. We play on PS3.

GGA has Marvel events sometimes, though. I know there were two last year. And of course there's UFGT, but I missed that because it was the same week I had papers due. If you know some great Chicago locations that play on PS3, feel free to fill me in.

I only know of the Chicago MK scene, which is awesome for all players.

If that's not the case for the rest of the games here perhaps that's why Chicago MK is the most successful.

GGA used to have all the games but the Capcom guys left late last year over some drama. I guess they were butthurt because GGA favored the MK scene. Which was true, we did a lot of setups, sponsorships and stream time. But IMO it was deserved since we leveled up hella and Chicago Capcom is not as successful.

RE: The Fray Episode 7

Damn, Fubar dropping the f bomb out of nowhere, didn't see that coming. I agree with him about Injustice though, 2-3 months should be enough and they didn't have a problem with it in the past, and it's still exciting when the game is still new. But I do also acknowledge that less people have had a chance to play it at events too vs. MK, MvC3, etc.

Also damn, Tekken community on blast, didn't know stuff was like that. Also bluerei hates everything confirmed. Kinda surprised by everyone's answers for the games they want to see (Gootecks: A lot of people are playing PSASBR - WUT).

Also lol @ the West Coast bias in best non-major tournament. Aftershock was only better than the one Curleh that was barely streamed due to internet issues. Production values I agree were higher though, and it was still an amazing event.

Magus saying Infrit is on his way to be one of the best, I don't know, dude's performance is on a downturn and all evidence points to him having good bracket during EVO. I don't feel like Infrit has evolved as a player mentally the way everyone else has, and he's playing the same game essentially and it's not working. Don't think a sponsor would change that. I do understand he's in the middle of a crisis though, but I feel like the mental game is a cause.

LMAO @ Gootecks nominating himself as most washed up player hahahaha. I reluctantly agree with the long discussion on Viscant though, good points made there. Definitely agree with fubarduck though, he's a long term thinker, and not making the quick buck he did in Vanilla where he clearly outsmarted everyone else playing the game. Also agree Zero is not the character for Jay too.

Cross Assault probably my pick for controversy of the year too, but damn, we've had some MASSIVE FGC drama in the past year. The Cross Assault thread was something of legends. I was SO excited to come home and watch Cross Assault every day of the week for all the reasons besides the game. It was an amazing viewing experience with a haunting aftermath.

Shout outs to Marden for begging folks to up their production game and offering to help the community for free.95.

Wow I'm watching it right now. lol

I feel HonzoGonzo tries to hard. like stop bro

I don't understand why so many people are ignoring Fall Classic, and coming up with their own speculation of why Winter Brawl, Final Round, and ECT aren't there.
Yeah, they probably can't talk about it, but then just drop it entirely instead of coming up with speculation they know isn't going on.

Yeah I was surprised by that too, cause I expected pretty much everyone on that stream to know they're doing it too. Kinda weird how none of them acknowledged that as the reason Final Round was pulled as a qualifier and wanted to make estranged IPL theories instead.

Fubarduck is spot on with that ultimatum Wizard gave to anime games in its players. Like that was bullshit for them to say I'm glad Fubar told it like it is.

Mind expanding on the Tekken stuff for discussion? Probably a bit long for me to sit through today

Was he critical of it? Because it annoyed me. No need to create an "us against them" atmosphere when every game is in exactly the same boat.

He basically said what you're saying and called out Tekken.

Magus: "Tekken is the best game out right now with the worst community. Most people play Marvel and SF but those games are shit and Tekken is the only actual good game." He mentioned they're cliquey and I think said they drove themselves into the spot they're in where it's inclusive.

TBQH I have a lot of respect for Tekken and it's mechanics especially so I can respect that opinion, without this turning into a whos game's dick is better kind of discussion again.
