Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Ok, so what's the coolest game mechanic you've seen in a shmup?
Hitogata Happa's kamikaze mechanic is the best worst idea ever. After you survive for a certain length of time, you can ram your ship into enemies/bosses for MASSIVE DAMAGE. Okay, so you die in the process, but you can't make an omelette without blowing up eggs. Plus it gets you extra money for the shop.

So it seems like Strikers 1945 and Layer Section are both generally considered to be better than their immediate sequel? (Strikers 1945 II and Layer Section 2)

Galactic Attack/Layer Section is pretty phenomenal on Sega Saturn. I can still pull that out and play it today. Very enjoyable.

I don't know that RayStorm isn't at least on par with it though. Both are really solid shooters.

So, Saturday night and I'm a bit drunk and decide to finally pull out the twin stick, locate my 360 copy of Under Defeat, and finally see if the Hori Twin Stick actually works on New Order mode set to two sticks. I've never found on the web in the last year if it actually works. Mine have been in storage for years.

And, it does!

No real triggers, just the left stick to control movement, while the right is shooting (like Geo Wars, Stardust, etc). Right trigger is your bomb.

A curiosity, maybe. Twin stick control on the pad actually felt quicker...but of course, that is digital. But, it is definitely cool with those big-ass Sanwa sticks and the super-big widescreen image, moving your chopper. A neat little challenge in itself.

What are your impressions of the game Yes Boss? Been holding off on getting this till Christmas - and I never played original.

Cool experiment with the twin sticks - any game that can be controlled with twin sticks is already awesome in my book. :)

I have not really played a lot of it so there are probably others that have better opinions.

One thing for sure, it is a military shooter, which are some of the best. Pumping upbeat music, and awesome enemies. Take apart bosses, etc. It is polygon, but looks good. The helicopter movement is pretty dope, where you angle your chopper and lock on in that direction for strafe. Scoring system is not too hard but definitely makes the game more challenging if you are going for score. PS3 version has a ton of versions, multiple music and extras.

Ha, cool thing with the twin sticks. Back in the day, I wanted to get the Dreamcast twinsticks to use with Bangaioh, but I read somewhere that it wasn't that simple and wouldn't work properly. Some modding to the stick with a padhack could probably get it working, though.

I don't know that RayStorm isn't at least on par with it though. Both are really solid shooters.

RayForce (Galactic Attack/Layer Section) I always felt was a better game, but I think RayStorm/Layer Section II is pretty good on its on merits, just not _better_.

Working Designs tinkered with RayStorm quite a bit didn't they? I could see where you like the Saturn one better. I have never played it though. Just the PSX release from WD.

Didn't PS1 Zanac X Zanac suffer from input issues when played on certain PS1 and PS2 hardware runs? Night Raid had similar issues when played on anything other than a a JP PS1. Can anyone confirm if the PSN Zanac X Zanac release suffers?

It's easy to test. Just wiggle the joystick left and right a few times and the ship eventually drifts off as if suffering from a dropped input.

Got a couple of shooters for Christmas :)

I got Under Defeat (Deluxe/PS3) and am completely shocked by how good this game is.

The controls take a bit to get used to - but after changing to Reverse, it clicked and I can't stop playing. Managed to get to level 3 without losing a ship, then used the rest of my credits to finally die at the beginning of stage 5.

Really loving it - GRev shooters seem to always feel fresh. Strania was hard as hell, but i loved it because it felt different from the usual - and that definiately applies here as well.

Never played the DC/Arcade version - and will give those a go to see the differences... but it's so hard NOT to play the new version because it looks so good. Still glad the game includes the original.

Easily one of the biggest surprise games for me this year!

-------------------------------------

Last but not least: Viper Phase 1 PCB (USA/New Version).

Not sure if many people played this before, but it's one of the best space shooters I ever played.

It's essentially the Raiden series in space, mixed with a ThunderForce 3 vibe...

I know, it basically sounds like the best ever made.

There is so much detail going on in the background - pilots running to their ships, loading docks being activated, etc. You have basically the same weapons from Raiden, including the laser and wide shot, as well as missiles and a napalm weapon - and the bosses are multi staged battles, like a giant robot launching into space, then after you destroy it's limbs, you flight what's left floating in space.

I'm pretty sure this game never got a home port, which is a real shame. If you can play it on MAME, make sure you play New Version or USA version - the original is apparently gimped (your secondary weapon had ammo, and was near impossible to power up because of that) and the New/USA versions fix that, plus more.

Anyone else get some shooters for the holidays? :)

If some of you already bought these games, especially the XBLIG ones, I'd like to have some feedback.

Would anyone in the Austin or Central Texas area be interested in setting up a Shmup meet? I have have held a few successful meet ups in the past with a group mostly made up of people from Racketboy. I wanted to gauge interest before I post something in the community forum.

Edit: Actually, just PM me if you are in the area and are interested. I don't want to hijack this thread.

I'd attend if I knew well ahead of time, I'm from SATX.

Took longer than usual, but it arrived!

God, that arranged soundtrack is one of Technosoft's best. Up there with Thunder Force IV and V.

Man, I have to find and buy this game. Ashamed to admit I never played it.

I recently went on a preorder tear with Ginga Force, Neo XYX and Sturmwind - so the purchase will have to wait.

How much does a copy go for nowadays?

Oh shit, Snops Attack! looks great, have to download that one. Totally flew under my radar.

I've been in a real shmup mood recently since buying Akai Katana and DoDonPachi: Ressurection with the last of my Christmas money.

Can anyone recommend any more good ones for me to get sucked into? (360, UK). So far I have the following:

Akai Katana
DoDonPachi: Ressurection
Deathsmiles
Trouble Witches Neo!
Ikaruga
Triggerheart Excelica

I've downloaded a few demo's to play through too, but haven't had a chance to fire them up yet, and probably won't be able to till next week sometime (hence posting here for advice):

Strania
Guwange
Sine Mora
KoF: Sky Stage
Radiant Silvergun

I have approx 2000 msp on my account to spend, but may try picking up more as required.

I understand Sine Mora has Stereo 3D support (if so, AWESOME, more need this!!!) but I've read mixed things about the validity of Arcade Stick play, so I'm not sure.

Indie games is also a possibility, although I've not really looked at them too much.

Is Ikaruga available in the UK? If so, get that off XBLA.

That's already in the list of ones I own (actually, I own it twice as I also have the Gamecube version, if that nets me any sympathy). I'm terrible at it, btw... in fact, I'm terrible at all of them, lol. Just glad there's infinite continues or I'd never get through the games! I am getting a bit better though.

Guwange is pretty good, I really liked the gameplay and the graphics. Since you have a lot of Cave shmup, this one could be a good pick.

Sine mora is a really particular case, the game was developed for gamepad. It uses the sensitivity of the joystick's gamepad which you can't control with an arcade stick.
And the most important, imo, the game is not a danmaku
maybe I was the only one to think that
.

Ginga Force official Xbox.com page up.

http://www.xbox.com/ja-JP/Marketplace/SplashPages/gingaforce

Releasing 2/14! Right around the damn corner.

Hope this is a good one. The guys at Qute did a pretty good job on Eschatos so I'm hopeful.

Can't come soon enough! Should be tons of fun. Good stuff with Gunhound in a week or so, followed by Ginga, then the new Cave in April/May , I'm guessing.

Tax return next month so I'm probably going to finally order a copy of Border Down, as well.

Anyone have recommendations for stuff to check out on PC? I'm checking out some of the PC Shmups from the Best of 2012 link posted earlier. Haven't had a PC for gaming in years, feel like I'm in heaven.

Are there any good shmups/STG games on the Japanese PSN store for 400 yen? I have 1200 yen left, want to buy Gradius II PC Engine, and can't find anything to spend the last 400 on.

I may just spend another bit of cash and buy more yenny money.

Nothing for 400 I'm afraid...I'm always in that boat and usually just bank it for the future. There are some very good Sega Ages PS2 discs up, though...Phantasy Star Collection, Treasure Box, and Space Harrier Collection.

Ha ha, I'm always in that boat as well. I just keep 'em until the next time, and pick up an extra game. I think I picked up one of the Simple Series Cotton games because it was the cheapest I could find.

In case you dudes missed it in the other threads, Ikaruga is out in the US on Android. It seems to chug a little on my Nexus 4 & 7, but offers lower resolution modes (which look disgusting) but run fine. The biggest surprise for me was that I plugged my PS3 BrawlStick into my Nexus 7 (through an adapter) and that shit totally worked! It was an incredibly bootleg looking setup, but I could play Ikaruga on my tablet with a damn arcade joystick. Now I wish I had a Nexus 10.

Nano Assault Neo for the Wii U needs to be added to that list, it's fantastic.

My all-time favourite shooter of all-time has to be The Empire Strikes Back on the Atari VCS 2600, hugely addictive...was the main cause of broken joysticks back in the day for my family even though Atari built the things pretty well. Hate to think how many hours of my childhood I ploughed into that game!
