Got a couple of shooters for Christmas
I got
Under Defeat (Deluxe/PS3) and am completely shocked by how good this game is.
The controls take a bit to get used to - but after changing to Reverse, it clicked and I can't stop playing. Managed to get to level 3 without losing a ship, then used the rest of my credits to finally die at the beginning of stage 5.
Really loving it - GRev shooters seem to always feel fresh. Strania was hard as hell, but i loved it because it felt different from the usual - and that definiately applies here as well.
Never played the DC/Arcade version - and will give those a go to see the differences... but it's so hard NOT to play the new version because it looks so good. Still glad the game includes the original.
Easily one of the biggest surprise games for me this year!
-------------------------------------
Last but not least:
Viper Phase 1 PCB (USA/New Version).
Not sure if many people played this before, but it's one of the best
space shooters I ever played.
It's essentially the Raiden series in space, mixed with a ThunderForce 3 vibe...
I know, it basically sounds like the best ever made.
There is so much detail going on in the background - pilots running to their ships, loading docks being activated, etc. You have basically the same weapons from Raiden, including the laser and wide shot, as well as missiles and a napalm weapon - and the bosses are multi staged battles, like a giant robot launching into space, then after you destroy it's limbs, you flight what's left floating in space.
I'm pretty sure this game never got a home port, which is a real shame. If you can play it on MAME, make sure you play New Version or USA version - the original is apparently gimped (your secondary weapon had ammo, and was near impossible to power up because of that) and the New/USA versions fix that, plus more.
Anyone else get some shooters for the holidays?
