EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

If Brawl somehow wins, they should sneak in Project M or w/e in its place. The EVO dudes wouldn't notice, they don't even know it is a fighting game.

Yeah, this stuff is closer to what I expected. It's going to take a lot for SG to stand up to Melee in the long run.

Next two weeks are going to be interesting. :D

There is something fundamently WRONG when you take a show about friendship and how you should accept and love everyone that is aimed at little girls and then turn into a crazy doshin fighter combo based that no little girl (or anyone that is not a crazy fighter fan for that matter) can play in a considerable way

Would make MUCH more sense if it was a "fun for everyone" game like Brawl

it is, but the game doesn't even have a console release date in Japan or the US yet. It's kinda hard to put money down and just hope that will sort itself out.

Worst-case, if BB hypothetically won and BBCP wouldn't be out in time, it would either be a BBCS:Extend tournament, or the community would give up its slot like they did a few years back. Probably the latter.

So Skullgirls is in first place right now, beating out Fighting is Magic and Melee.

C'moooon, Ponies! I wanna see that exhibition on stream!

Man, I'm still shocked to see people still donating towards Skullgirls. Melee keeps catching up, but Skullgirls answers back with another massive lead.

Is there even a community for Skullgirls!?

Nope, there isn't. It's probably just the Smash players trying to give the FGC false hope, but then snatch it away at the last second on the final day.

From last year's tournament. More pictures here iirc.

I love Skullgirls, but the game should be Smash. It likely has more than triple the scene and EVO is about big tournaments. I kind want them to just let both in. Right now it feels like they are killing each other.

Yeah, pretty much this. I'm torn on which one I want to see at EVO. :(
Also I'm unsure on how many donations are actually for Skullgirls or "Not Smash". Yay if for the former, kind of disappointing for the latter.

I feel Skullgirls needs it waaaaay more than Smash. Being at EVO doesn't really make much difference for Smash IMO.

I don't think Evo will make much difference for any of the games mentioned. I think for most of the fighters of 2012, people have already made their verdict. It could have helped Injustice though.

Yipes commentating on MLP would be one of the best things ever.

Yipes and Zero-chan commentating on the ponies would be one of the funniest things ever. Also give a copy to Kusoru so he can shove a Rarity figurine in people's faces when he trolls them out.

14 days remaining, unless they decide to extend it.

EVO didn't screw Smash. Smash screwed Smash.

Smash will do just fine. Our pockets might not be as deep as the brony community's, but our tournaments tend to have more than the 40 people watching Skullgirls in the photo above there and it will show.

I love this competition. Hope they do it every year for the games that miss the cut.

RE: "Who needs it more", I think funnily enough Smash and Skullgirls are complete opposites. SOmebody on SRK summed it up:

What Smash has: Active tournament community, confirmed upcoming sequel
What Smash wants: Developers that care about competition, FGC respect/recognition

What Skullgirls has: Developers that care about competition, FGC respect/recognition
What Skullgirls wants: Active tournament community, confirmed DLC

They think EVO is the key. In truth I think EVO will do jack shit for either cause, but after seeing APEX I do think Melee stands a reasonable chance of converting a few people during Evo.

I'm surprised that there aren't more rich fans who wouldn't blink an eyelash at dropping a few thousand on their game of choice. I guess that'll happen at the last hour with sniping perhaps?

Damn. I agree that Evo doesn't really do much. But I'd say Skullgirls needs it more. If through some miracle Evo boosts the sales of the alt game by 10k. That's a drop in the bucket for a Nintendo fighter, while that is considerably more for a niche fighter.

Look at it this way, if Skullgirls is at EVO, I'll probably finally buy the game. I really hate the art syle so I haven't done so to this point. But I'll be watching all of EVO so might as well put some time in and learn all about it. Can't say the same about melee because of the relative barrier to entry.

Even if the devs drop another 5k late on it, it is only a couple of hundred sales to get that back. They would be crazy not to once they know the target.

at least it's for a good cause.

I'm fine with either making it.

I saw that comparison, and while it's good for a laugh, it's stretching things to make it line up.

I've seen a few Smash players hope out loud that an Evo showing will send some sort of message to the developers, but I seriously doubt the majority thinks that way. Even if a miracle happened and it did, I'm sure whatever direction the next Smash is going in is locked at this point. Either way, I don't think the Smash community is looking to Evo as a way of getting developers to care about competitive play.

Skullgirls only has the respect of the FGC if you compare it to how much Smash has. It's probably in the Blazblue~Melty region, if I had to stick it somewhere. It's an accepted niche, but not much beyond that.

Skullgirls doesn't just need an active tournament scene, it also needs a larger install base. People talk shit about 40 people at this or that event, but relative to the copies that game has pushed I wouldn't be surprised if the ratio of purchase to participation is higher than most fighting games. The publicity at Evo is guaranteed to help it, though how much is anyone's guess. It's not a panacea--it's just an opportunity that can't be overlooked.

Someone also brought up a good point on SRK that SG was going to have a side tournament at EVO anyway but presumably Melee/Brawl weren't, and wondered if it wouldn't be just-as-if-not-more effective if the SSBM crew brought the degree of money they were raising as a pot for an Evo side tournament. Have a massive showing--a crowd like the one at APEX would be impossible to ignore--, start talking with Mr. Wizard and the Cannon bros directly after/during the event, that seems like a surefire way for the community to lock a slot in for future events.

I'm not saying that Smash fans should suddenly stop donating and do this--especially since I still consider SG the underdog in this donation battle--but to me this sounds like a pretty viable option their community has if they ended up losing, but still wanted to show the FGC that they deserve to be on that stage. And unlike what's happening now, it's an option they could consider for any Evo, due to the nature of how the event is run.

That's a disturbingly accurate comparison.

I think EVO can help both games a lot TBH, there are more toddhunters out there and the publicity, even if its within the community can be significant, especially when more scenes emerge to practice for EVO, you see Justin training hard for Skullgirls, etc.

The one thing I'm just not sure about is whether EVO has some secret vendetta against Smash. I don't really see why they would this day and age, and MrWizard with the surprise Persona pick shows he's probably capable of discerning personal interests from what the community wants, needs, and will support. I think Melee returning to EVO with the community standard dictating the ruleset would be a spectacle despite how much more work it would mean on EVO/the stream's end. I just feel like Skullgirls serves more to gain from it, even if that gain probably wouldn't do shit as far as the future of the franchise goes.

This is going to sound rather harsh and blunt, but I doubt Skullgirls will ever have a consistent and healthy competitive scene, with or without EVO.

I'm not sure if Smash will gain anything out of this, but theres a (small) chance that this is the beginning of something special. It all depends on how much effort the EVO staff puts into it.

That's cool, I can understand that position. Outside of helping the charity, we're all donating in the possibilities we believe in.

Same here

It sucks that two out of my three favorite fighters in the world are locked in a death struggle(at least in relation to EVO).

Of course it helps. Don't be silly.
It could have helped Injustice though.
Injustice will have a flotation device made of cold hard cash if worst comes to worst. It doesn't need "help". Doubly so if Netherrealm makes it a good game which is not that unlikely.

I sort of agree.

I agree if they make for two player's choice slots instead. One is too few for all these peasant games.
