This is all just theorizing. People trying to come up with an explanation for why someone would do something so dumb.

It's plausible... but it seems more likely to me he just made her up to look good.
 
His statement reads like textbook PR spin. He got caught so his agent is doing all he can to spin it off of Te'o. No one would pull a hoax that elaborate, and I thought they met before? If they had a picture of them together they could face match in the FBI database if he's that sure he was hoaxed by some other girl.

It really isn't that hard. Dude is smart enough to know that promotion wins awards in college espcially the Heisman not achievement. This shit was a publicity stunt. Notre Dame plus this shit plus play halfway decent = almost a virtual lock for the heisman. He just underestimated the nation's love of scooby do.

His mental state could definitely play a factor. But there have been players drafted with issues. Mathieu will be drafted, and his issues are far greater than Manti's. So at worst his stock should drop because of his play in the BCS title game and this issue, but there's no way that he should go undrafted.

He probably planned on killing her off the moment his grandmother (who was terminally ill) died. That's an amazing story (simultaneous deaths, perseverance) that would get him enormous time in the spotlight (and did).

This story is just so incredibly bizarre. If he's gay, then why go to the effort to have some massively convoluted online girlfriend hoax? This is just so weird.

THE same. It was crazy here in Denver. the guy was apparently drinking Grey Goose vodka before (possible during) practice. There was a point where we found out the guy was living in a huge house with a tons of expensive cars and no one knew where the money was coming from since he wasn't getting paid much.
The theory was that he had borrowed 7 figures or more from 'someone' (mob) under the idea that he would eventually make way more once he career took off. This ties into the whole incident of him armed to the fucking teeth with body armor on the run. it wasn't the cops he was running from.

So I walk in from getting a haircut and flip on SportsCenter, and I see "Breaking News: Manti Te'o's Girlfriend did not exist," and I'm thinking, and? A lot of dudes' "girlfriends" don't actually exist. It's called being a dude. It wasn't for a few minutes that someone mentioned the whole "supposedly dead" angle.

So anyway...

What an idiot.
