Bahaha

I'm not convinced he made her up. Everything I've read so far suggests that he believed she was real, but lied about how they met to hide the fact that it was an online relationship in fear of being ridiculed or mocked for it. One line that stood out from the press conference earlier was the following: "the most trusting person I know [Manti] will now never be able to trust like he once did before".

It sounds like a prank that went horribly wrong. This to me is the most conceivable explanation

te'o innocence is secondary to the fact ND tried to cover this shit up

I think there's a chance he met a fake girl online and just lied to everyone about the relationship (including his family) to make it sound like he had a real GF. Sure as hell wouldn't be the first time someone has done that. If that's the case he needs to admit to being pathetic because there are still huge holes in this.

Or the gay theory.

Does that story make sense over a 3 year span, with a nationally known player?

That's just sad. Look at this:
Toward the end of the press conference, one reporter asked Swarbrick if the Situation had affected Te'o's performance in the BCS title game. God was in his heaven and all was right with the world.
They're so desperate to spin this, that they're apparently blaming their loss in Miami on one of the cast members from Jersey Shore.

Except... he's not the unpopular nerd.

He's the star football player. He's probably tripping over women who would love to date him.

So why would he need to lie?

To me, this paragraph from the story is the smoking gun that the "she was my online girlfriend" is a lie:

"Swarbrick deflected a question about the multiple instances in which Te'o fed reporters stories about having met Kekua by saying Te'o could answer them himself. Remember? The South Bend Tribune said they supposedly locked eyes after the ND-Stanford game in 2009. The same paper later wrote that Teo's father, Brian, said Kekua sometimes traveled to Hawaii to see Te'o, though the family had never met her."

It doesn't make sense because of the car accident and Leukemia story.

Honestly, I hope he's gay. That's actually (sadly) more understandable given his situation.

Guys there are people in my newsfeed seriously and strongly denying that Te'o had anything to do with this.

What's it like tying your entire existence to a college football team?

It looks a little bit like this.

Danny Kanell ‏@dkanell13
This Te'o story makes ND performance vs Bama much more explainable. Their emotional leader completely distracted and flat. Huge blow

You're missing the part where the football player has said that he's talked to the girl on the phone, is close to her family, met her at a football game, spent time with her in Hawaii, etc.

Felt her ghostly presence with him at football games as well... : /

And hey guys dont forget, this is totally a hoax being played on Te'o. And he got a call from her on december 6th, and notre dame was investigating on december 26th, and yet they still kept on publicizing the dead girl story all the way up to the national championship game ... : |

There is not one thing coming out of notre dame that anyone here should believe.

This is gotta be the dumbest lie ever. What benefit do you get out if and getting caught will now cost him millions of dollars, not just in draft positioning, but in possible endorsements.

Man, what a dummy.

After seeing that press conference I can't possibly imagine there are people who actually buy into the idea that Manti wasn't in on this. That was dreadful.

What if the girlfriend is real and Manti Teo'o is the hoax?
I've got it! Manti is really a girl who is in drag as a guy to break into the NFL. She needed to have a girlfriend as extra cover. Meanwhile Tuiasosopo got close to Manti and online pretended to be Lennay to start an online relationship with Manti.

Sometime through all this, either Manti discovered Lennay was Tuiasosopo, or Tuiasosopo discovered Manti was a girl. But they fell in love despite all the deception; and decided the whole Lennay situation needed to end - in death!

Because of Manti's secret we know that her whole family had to be in on the deception. On their own, they decided that if Lennay had to die, there should be a body. So they killed the grandmother hoping to pull a switcheroo, having a funeral for the grandmother and a closed casket funeral for Lennay for any inquiring press (which oddly there were none). After the fact they told Manti the story and told her what to say to the press to garner attention and fame to boost her career.

Meanwhile like an above poster suggested, they got in touch with the Samoan Gay Support Group, lied to them that Manti was gay and in a relationship with another guy (Tuiasosopo) so that if anyone ever came asking for Lennay, there would be all these people who would back up the story of having met her.

So everyone is in on the lie, are lying about different things, and there was also a murder which has since been covered up. There is no way Manti can tell the truth now, there are too many people's lives at stake!

You can't be serious.

It's an insult to cancer victims and survivors for one thing.

I'm slightly confused here. The claims of this girl dying from cancer originated from where? From the Deadspin article, it is Brian who is quoted at first going public with the news. What did ND exactly cover up? You mean failing not to go public with this as soon as they found out?

The most telling part to me:

Swarbrick said Te'o had told him the inital meeting with Kekua had taken place online. "Several meetings were set up," Swarbrick said, "where Lennay never showed, including some in Hawaii." So: Manti Te'o was drawn in this far by a "girlfriend" he never met and who blew him off more than once when he did try to meet her.

What a fraud! Especially The University of Notre Dame for trying to cover this up. The only reason for a press conference today was because of the report that Deadspin released. If the report was never written they would still be living up this fraud.

So why would he need to lie?

I don't think Notre Dame works like a high school football team. Sure he's one of the most popular guys but maybe he didn't like the women trying to throw themself at him. Maybe he's not and outgoing guy. Or maybe the gay theory

Same. What does ND have to gain, really, when you consider the shitstorm if it's a cover up/lie, especially post-PSU.

Hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ask Baylor and Texas A&M about what having a Heisman winner does for donations. Or better yet:

All told, Baylor estimates the Heisman win was worth $250 million in extra donations, increased ticket sales, licensing fees, sponsorship deals, an expanded deal with Fox Sports Southwest, and higher corn dog sales.
http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/dollars/post/_/id/2537/how-much-is-winning-heisman-worth

And that's Baylor...a tiny school in terms of alumni base and "t-shirt" fan support compared to Notre Dame. And that's with just a great, transcendently-athletic QB and all-around nice guy in RGIII--no tragic story of overcoming terrible heartbreak to play the game of his life and get his team into the Natty attached.

You can probably take whatever Baylor got and at least triple it if Notre Dame got the trophy...especially with another "Gipper"-like story attached to it.

Ummmm, duh?

Which also wasn't true
