Maybe it is the late hour, but can I ask you and others here a favour to go over the evidence with fresh eyes and bullet point the specifics that undermine the official explanation? Legit request

All the quotes and stories in the world won't convince you if you believe he was simply too embarrassed to admit he fell for an internet prank, but if you want a point-by-point timeline outlining the hoax, simply read the Deadspin article.

Please read my edit in the above post.

Reveal: I once lied to my mother that I spent time with a girl I met online. If someone had asked my mother whether X girl existed, she would have said the exact same thing as his father did.

Okay. He still lied about it repeatedly to gain sympathy/publicity. That is the issue, that he made her up.

I feel like the only reasonable explanation here is that he is gay and it is unfortunate how much attention is being shed on this topic. Imagine having to come out of the closet in this manner? Media pretty much ruined this persons life. He never should have lied, but he most likely did just to keep the peer pressure off of him in college. Can only imagine the peer pressure on getting with chicks being the star player on the Notre Dame football squad that made it to the BCS championship game.

Then why claim she died at all? Why not just say they broke up

Whatever. Most of those related human interest stories are probably ridiculous exagerrated . . . so what if this one happens to completely fake. What difference does it make?

Well, for one, it's quite enjoyable that it's happening to a sanctimonious, morally self-righteous, self-aggrandizing, and thus easily detestable institution like Notre Dame football. So that would be one difference.

Right, so how about I adopt an actual conspiracy theory instead and say Te'o, and maybe ND, were part of a sophisticated attempt to hide his sexuality by creating a fake girlfriend for him?

Did you read the whole article in the OP? It looks more like the prank/hoax originated with Te'o and this friend Tuiasosopo. The question is more about if ND is trying to help Te'o perpetuate this 'victim' angle to avoid the rather dicey situation of knowingly (at some point) riding a made up cancer victim 'inspirational story' through a BCS run and Heisman campaign.

An online girlfriend who won't video chat with you is what kills me. Kids these days use Skype and FaceTime and whatever else to talk with pictures over the internet. For this to be believed, over the entire course of their relationship Te'o would have had to be fine with never actually seeing evidence of his girlfriend in motion; it seems like if you're really committed to a long-distance relationship in this day and age you'd video chat at least once.

I do wish the Deadspin article included a timeline of when various people became suspicious of things, so it could be compared to events as ND portrayed them. The fake sister Twitter account was still around in late November; it'd be interesting to see if Te'o notified ND as soon as word got out people were sniffing around the story.

You are going to far, he would have had to actually speak to someone first. He claims to have talked to her a ton of times so who was phone?

How do you think people would feel if your mother used that story to make hundreds of millions of dollars off of them?

You really don't understand why people find this story awesome?
Alt accounts, made up girls, it's shit you only see in forums, but in real life to famous people.

I mean, don't you enjoy those threads where someone here get exposed on their bullshit?
Now multiply it with good old sport hatred and you got yourself one awesome story.

And then there's this -

Spot on. I want to believe the best of teo but this rings totally false.

If you want to take it a step further, first off, he plays football for a Catholic school with a very strict code of ethics. ND is behind him right now, but evidence could change things, and Teo could find himself expelled and possibly forced to give back his scholarship. Even worse, if the "gay" thing grows, he's also a practicing Mormon. So basically you have a gay man who is affiliated on a public level with two of the most conservative organizations on the planet. In short, this could very well ruin his life.

So who is having a press conference tomorrow?

L K ‏@LennayKay

It isn't fair to drag Reagan and Troy into this.. a lot of truths and myths need to be addressed here, and they will be at noon PST tomorrow

Has this been posted?

ESPN reporter says Te'o told him to back off when he couldn't find evidence of car accident or death BEFORE HIS OCTOBER STORY.

Well, I sat across from him and I was moved by his story and it was heartbreaking and heartwarming and as it turns out totally untrue. But short of asking to see a death certificate, I'm not sure what most people would do differently in that case. But in researching it before I wrote the script, I remember trying to find an obituary for his girlfriend and could not. And couldn't find any record of this car accident. But we asked Manti, could we contact Lennay's family and he said the family would prefer not to be contacted. Could we have some photos of Lennay? He said the family would prefer not to provide those. And so in that instance, and at that moment, you simply think that you have to respect those wishes. But in retrospect, you can see where some of those things simply were not adding up to make sense. Easy to say now. At the time it never enters your mind somebody was involved in that kind of hoax

Let us agree that Te'o was willing involved in perpetuating this lie. Why? What reason could he have that needed this 'girl' to die?

Seriously, the leukemia/car crash stuff is straight out of Page 6 of the Usenet troll handbook. I saw that shit happen so many times.
What is it about leukemia? Have seen it happen once firsthand myself (hoaxer eventually came clean when the ruse was discovered and was apologetic, though I sensed few believed it).

People wouldn't bother him about his girlfriend being suspiciously absent, and would probably never ask him about anything involving relationships with women period. And to keep people from looking further out of respect for the "dead".

Oh shit oh shit oh shit, what's if it's like Remington Steele and some chick would come forward and claim to be his girlfriend and everyone will just go along to save face?

Possible motives:

A) Sympathy helps his Heisman chances.
B) Started as a lie that snowballed out of control until it became the narrative of the season.
C) He's gay and tried to hide it with a fake gf story.
D) He has serious mental health issues.
E) Aliens.

Everyone in here has agreed with that. But for a few moments there you were under the assumption that Te'o didn't fabricate any of this. Significant amounts of evidence has shown all along he was part of the fabrication.

He lied, why is it so hard to believe he's a piece of shit who was trying to win a heisman trophy and get national endorsements once he goes pro

Fuck him

It's all starting to make sense now. I take my eye off the ball for just one day and this happens

Then why claim she died at all? Why not just say they broke up

The kid clearly isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Maybe he kept getting questioned by family/friends/teammates to be able to meet her. If he said they broke up, than it would be questioned that she never existed. The whole thing is absurd but I still stand to what I said in my previous post.

Attention. Building the sympathy angle to give him an edge in the Heisman voting. Getting drafted higher and getting more money.

Basically, he took the old trick of inventing a girlfriend and decided to take it to a crazy extreme. This is why the "gay" angle continues to get play, as what reason do you have to create a fake girlfriend than to stave off anti-gay hazing, which is likely pretty bad at a strict Catholic school like ND. Then, he decided to take it to the absolute extreme.

Like with Penn State and JoePa, ND is standing behind him right now, but once the evidence starts to mount he'll likely get expelled and get his scholarship revoked.

He might be able to get into the CFL or UFL, but that's about it. Then again, he could also go into pro wrestling. Hey, he's Samoan, which gives him a pretty good shot.

So assuming he fabricated this entire ordeal, do you guys think ND were aware of the entire truth, or did they believe his story of an internet prank?

He really needed to compound his grandmother passing with another death of someone close to him, days after?

Oy vey..I get what you're saying but goddamn. So potentially foul.

This is the most damning evidence that he was part of creating the hoax in my mind. There are way too many contradicting stories about when she died, all linked in the article. If it happened as he said, there would be one consistent date/time. Having multiple stories makes it seem like he was going with whatever story played better to the press until it settled at the "six hours later" version.

F) Extreme Munchhausen syndrome.

If he was operating under the assumption that no one would find out about the lie, her dying would prevent suspicion from arising in the future because he would still be "grieving".

He just forgot about a dead body being part of the whole thing to make his story legit. Hopefully next time he doesn't forget about that.
