Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

As I said earlier, I have a long distance boyfriend I met online and we talk on skype all the time. But neither of us have webcams so we don't see each other while we do it. So it's not completely unusual that Manti never saw this 'girl' on webcam.

Unless money is a big issue why wouldn't you each buy $20 webcams?

You know, the rational part of me says that this is total BS and he had to be in on it.

On the other hand, I've seen interviews with the guy and he seems like complete overboard Mormon bible dude. Like he would be fine not kissing his wife until they were married. It may be he is so naïve and so into his faith he just fell for this person because of the things they talked about and because they prayed together and stuff (which he said they did). Maybe he would occasionally throw in references to meeting her because he knew the whole thing would sound crazy to other people. I mean, did he have any girlfriends in high school or anything? Maybe he's just a really immature individual who could be taken in by something like this.

But there are so many questions. I don't know, the whole thing is just ridiculous.

Stephen A. Smith good lord give this man a standing round of applause.

I'm with him: Te'o is either a complete idiot or he was neck deep in the hoax.

yes it is unusal. Not saying it's wrong or anything those lines, but NEVER actually seeing someone you claim to be in love with is unusual.

have you NEVER actually seen your long distance BF?
I've seen him on his friend's webcam before. I've also seen pictures of him and it's not as if he presents himself as a model or something. So I have no reason to question him.
how long have you guys been together?
9 Months.

It's never really been brought up although he has thought about getting one so I could watch him play games. He is also legally blind so it's not as if he cares that much about seeing me on webcam either. :P
or at least share photos/Facebook.
We are on facebook and share photos.

Somehow these never get old

LOL, I've seen these before, but always from a random person and never a 'major' source like Deadspin. Just another meme, or are they just letting him know he's shit?

You should play LA Noire, no you wouldn't know more about microexpressions, but you'll stop wishing you did.

p.s.
Isn't it mostly bullshit anyway?
I have no idea how valid it is, I only know about it because of Lie to Me.

I enjoyed L.A. Noire in terms of being an interactive movie with amazing music.

The one key component that a lot of you guys are overlooking is Manti's devout Mormonism. It is totally normal for these folks to date someone for years and barely hold hands. Having a completely online relationship with no face to face isn't quite so bizarre in that context.

Except I'm pretty sure Mormon's find lying to still be a sin, so yea if he is so devout why was he lying to his parents, the media, his teammates, etc.

nope

I'm saying it's a little easier to swallow that he was the victim of an elaborate hoax, made larger by ND's season.

It is unusual. Nowadays even the cheapest of laptops have built in webcams, and then there is face timing via cell phone. These are college kids with access to computers and wifi signals up the ass. Not to mention he has family in Hawaii and is a big time football player who travels to California for games. At no point could he take a day or two to visit his girlfriend who Is supposedly dying of cancer? Makes no sense.

And even of his story were true, the idea that he would skip his girlfriends funeral to play a football game is pretty disturbing in itself. No idea why he was applauded for that even at the time. That's just strange.

Yeah, I don't believe his story at all. I was just saying to the people talking about skype that not seeing someone on webcam isn't suspicious in and of itself.

It is obvious he has lied/is lying about some things, and possibly everything.

Somebody on this very site a week ago proclaimed his undying love for some chick he met over the internet and talked with on the phone...for a week...so I really don't think that Manti's victim story is completely improbable. (yes I know I know he was traveling to see her but it does happen...). He obviously embellished the story if he was the victim but it will be easy to prove one way or another.

Nah, Mormons just don't have pre-marital sex. Lots of making out and such is normal. It's crazy that he wouldn't have had any physical contact with her.

I know that is what you are saying. He still lied even under that scenario, unless we assume that all the articles were sourced from people that were in on the hoax. Especially the quotes from his Dad show that he at least lied to his dad, cause his dad said they had met in Hawaii several times.

Also there are several articles that don't contain direct quotes from Manti that talk about meeting in Stanford for the first time and Hawaii. Again, those stories came from somewhere and I find it implausible that everyone these papers talked to was in on the hoax, they had to come from Manti even if we assume they weren't first hand stories from Manti directly to the reporter.

The most charitable reading of the situation is that Manti was spouting a whole bunch of bullshit to his friends and he never intended it to start getting reported in the papers, then he had to go along to cover it up once his friends started talking to reporters. This might explain why almost none of the news stories have direct quotes.

I was really hoping new information would be out now after I read up all about it last night...hopefully he comes clean soon about the truth because the internet will do it for him sooner or later.

Mormons aren't any different from anyone else. They fuck, and they often do it before marriage. They just don't let their bishop know about it.

For sure, but can you see how little lies about meeting someone face to face (it's embarrassing to get so serious with a girl you've never met) could have led to some of those stories? I guess I can more easily understand that Manti is an idiot that got duped than I can some of the more elaborate theories.

I edited my post and it pretty much says what you say here, but unlike you I think that is a charitable take on this story not the most realistic.

Exactly.

And people keep repeating this "girlfriend for 3 years" fallacy.

This was a "friend" for more than 2 of those years.. someone he apparently lied to his Father about. Which isn't shocking at all.

"Met any nice girls at school son?"

"Yeah, I have a friend. We talk online.. but.. yeah we met at a game."

Then over time other white lies about this friend.. meeting in Hawaii, etc. to hide that it was online only. Lies then have to be repeated once the media gets ahold of the odd Munchausen angle of this person pretending to be sick (which aside from an attention grab for hoaxers, is also an easy out to end it if it goes too far.)

The weirdest stuff is how his good friend was supposedly involved.

BUT much of that evidence could be: Manti realized he was hoaxed.. so he enlisted the help of his good friend for a cover up.

Can someone explain the story for a non-fan of college football like myself?

Well-known human has really bad month in September 2012. Grandmother and GF die same day. Well-known human uses tragedy to get better at the thing he does, people around him seemingly use this as inspiration to get better too.

Well-known human gets big recognition, comes in 2nd place for a really cool award, partly because of his character shown in the face of adversity.

Guy then says the GF never died, never even existed. He was simply the victim of an elaborate online dating hoax. People that fell for the sob story are upset and want answers. Was he really duped? Was he complicit in order to garner publicity? We shall see!

edit: Also he could be gay.

Did anyone post that the apparent ESPN interview has been cancelled?

By the way, on @WaddleandSilvy, the guys told me Bristol called. ESPN/Schaap sitdown with Manti Te'o was "scrapped." Just passing it along.

Guys, Manti is gay. Good friend is more than just a "good friend." Imaginary girlfriend is the worst beard ever.
