Gloriouser and gloriouser.

This news story just keeps on giving in every way possible

Even though it’s a stretch, I get the idea that he sometimes long distance relationships happen and people don’t meet for long periods
of time. The part that, for me, throws a wrench in all of this is that once he found out that this girl who was the “love of his life” and the most amazing person he’s ever met reveals she’s dying (and eventually dies) this all of a sudden is not your average online relationship. Then you have to start wondering why he didn’t go to visit, why he didn’t skip a game (regardless of her wishes) to surprise her or at least be at her funeral services. Why he didn’t try and call or visit her family to console them? That, to me, reeks of bullshit. And him or his advisors trying to threaten litigation will only open this up. Don’t think trial lawyers will start to dig into
phone records, will start to look for receipts for the supposed flowers he sent. To where? Which funeral home? What address? Where did he get this address? These are questions ND and Te’o don’t want asked, believe me. No way they try and take this to a civil litigation.

Long distance relationships are a farce. You can not be dating someone who is physically 4,000 miles away whom you never see. I always feel so bad for people who need this type of support in their lives.

"Yeah I got a lady in France...." awwwwwww

Also, isn't that a shitload of work by the "hoaxers"? I mean several hours every day or so of having to pretend to be a girlfriend. The massive amount of work needed to perpetuate this seems silly.

Especially with no clear motive, except to humiliate/embarrass him at this late stage. Someone either really had it in for him but even then that is a ridiculous amount of work to put in to get back at someone.

Isn't it a really strange coincidence that it would be a Hawaiian family involved in this? Hell, everyone involved seems to be Hawaiian. Also, don't scammer groups/families tend to target multiple marks? Te'o shouldn't be the only person they ran this scam with, and if not using the same name, they must have been using the same or similar pictures. I don't buy the duped story at all. I don't know if I'm just being stubborn, or if the warning signs I'm seeing are real. PEACE.

Plus, if they were building to some big cash grab, the climax was when she was sick and dying. Then they could guilt him into sending money. It's been months since her death, and no mention of extortion or money exchange. If he was robbed, he'd have spoken up already. This just doesn't add up to him being tricked. PEACE.

Yeah, nobody runs that long of a con, and puts in that amount of work, on someone for no reward.

Edit:
Has the real girl from the pictures made a comment?

Yes, in the original article (which is well worth reading, if you have even a passing interest in this story). She had no idea her pictures were being used.

Yeah, if it were a con why would you end it before he goes pro and gets the big money?

Which is why I have such a hard time believing it. Why would the hoaxers keep this up for over a year if they got nothing out of it?

If nothing else, all this speculation is going to force Te'o to give one of those horrific "I'm not gay, not that there's anything wrong..." statements at some point. Best thing he can do is cop to the hoax, and soon -- like today soon. Before Lance Armstrong's apology airs soon.

To be fair, they got flowers.

and a few picks

He had one scheduled?

I have a feeling that nothing would have been said until after the Draft if Deadspin didn't break it first.

he had a 1on1 scheduled w/ ESPN (Schapp), but was scrapped. My guess is because Schapp would trap him in a lie (probably not that hard) and now hes technically a Professional. So someone will pay to interview and give him softballs.

You never go full Piazza.

Man BSPN is going full-on with the "Manti is the victim!" angle. These idiots have learned NOTHING.

The only credible thing ESPN has done was to credit, vocally, that Deadspin broke then. If this was a couple of weeks ago before they caught ire for failing to sourcing other people, they may not have even mentioned Deadspin by name at 3PM pacific yesterday.

This is my opinion: He's a fucking retard and a liar. I DON'T believe he was in on the hoax. BUT i do believe he used the sob story to help win the Heisman and possibly hide the fact that he's gay. Either way the dude is a asshole whether he was in on it or not. The funny thing is he/they almost got away with it. Amazing.

With all the facts there is a 99.9% chance he was part of it so i really wouldn't be shocked. I just think he wanted to use his online gf for publicity and now he looks like a complete tool. The quote with the interceptions and sending white roses made me sick. Fucking creep.

espn got all the angles covered. there's folks that are outraged, there's folks that fully believe him, there's folks that have no idea what to make of it.

i find it quite funny how they operate. i'd love to work for them.

Typical Domer, right here, inflating Te'o's statistics. Amazing how "two picks" has become "a few picks." Give them another year and Mighty Manti will have had 47 picks against MSU.

fwiw i despise Notre Dame (Purdue Grad)...i was making a joke based on his quotes after the game.

forgot the '/sarcasm' tag. my bad

If your Manti and you aren't gay, and really made all this up to get Heisman votes, wouldn't the next logical step be to pretend to be gay? You then all of a sodden become a sympathetic figure, get fame, become a trailblazer, pretend to date guys. Sounds insane to you or I, but if someone is crazy enough to make up a story about a dead girlfriend for attention, it's the next logical step.

I've seen GAFFers openly support that clown here. It's disgusting. Cowherd is a race baiting asshole.

Yes, Cowherd is often terrible. Deadspin does a fantastic job pointing that out on a regular basis. "Cheap, young NHL beat writers" was another dumbass comment he made in recent years.

However, I'll give the man some amount of credit from time to time. I remember when Canseco first started naming names about steroid use in baseball, most people dismissed him, but Cowherd said something to the effect of, "I don't trust Canseco's judgment on many things, but the man clearly knows about steroids and the players that used them." He was spot on.

I wonder who tipped off the Deadspin reporters? Maybe I missed that detail.

different rumors on who. I've heard someone at ESPN (Tired that the company was sitting on the story) to regular people who had noticed discrepancies the last few months, and wrote to deadspin to check into it.

LMAO I was thinking about that last night. The media is going to destroy him for making fools of them if he's not a victim here
